True Buddhism Is Not Chinese”: Taiwanese Immigrants Defining Buddhist Identity in the United States
CHAPTER SIX “TRUE BUDDHISM IS NOT CHINESE”: TAIWANESE IMMIGRANTS DEFINING BUDDHIST IDENTITY IN THE UNITED STATES Carolyn Chen Based on ethnographic fi eldwork and in-depth interviews, this chapter examines how Taiwanese immigrant Buddhists defi ne Buddhism in the United States. Contrary to theories that immigrant religion preserves ethnic traditions in the new world, Taiwanese American Buddhists actively disavow any cultural connection with Asian Buddhism. Rather, they defi ne their religion as modern, western, and American. Rhetori- cally, this is a reaction against Taiwanese American Christians, and an attempt to package the dharma (Buddhist teachings) in a way that is attractive to Americans. This chapter complicates possible understand- ings of religion’s “ethnic function” by demonstrating that individuals may use religion to create ethnic boundaries among multiple cleavages and identities. It further emphasizes that Buddhism cannot be reduced to ethnicity, particularly when its practitioners’ mission is to propagate the dharma. To immigrants, religion often serves the critical function of reproduc- ing and preserving ethnic traditions in a foreign land. For this reason, scholars have noted how immigrants may become more religious after migrating to the United States (Smith 1978; Warner 1998, 2000). The majority of Buddhist Taiwanese immigrants become practicing or “true” Buddhists after migrating to the United States.1 In contrast to other Asian immigrants such as Thai (Cadge 2005; Numrich 1996) or Vietnamese (Zhou et al. 2002), most Taiwanese immigrants arrive in the United States non-religiously affi liated and discover Buddhism here rather than in their homeland. 1 The “true Buddhism” identity described in this chapter should not be confused with the group that calls itself True Buddha School, led by the Taiwanese teacher, Grand Master Sheng-yen Lu. -

Knauft 10 Emory University, USA ABSTRACT Among Tibetan Buddhist tantric practitioners, including in the U.S., visualisation and incorporation of mandala deities imparts a parallel world against which conventional 15 reality is considered impermanent and afflicted. Tantric adepts aspire through meditation, visualisation, and mind-training to dissolve normal selfhood and simultaneously embrace both ‘conventional’ and ‘ultimate’ reality. Ethics of compassion encourage efficient reengagement with conventional world dynamics rather than escaping them: the transcendental ‘non-self’ is perceived to inform efficient and compassionate waking consciousness. Transformation of subjective 20 ontology in tantric self-possession resonates with Foucault’s late exploration of ethical self-relationship in alternative technologies of subjectivation and with Luhrmann’s notion of transcendent spiritual absorption through skilled learning and internalisation. Incorporating recent developments in American Tibetan Buddhism, this paper draws upon information derived from a range of scholarly visits to rural and urban areas of the Himalayas, teachings by and practices with contemporary 25 Tibetan lamas, including in the U.S., and historical and philosophical Buddhist literature and commentaries. But tell me a story, and it will live in my heart forever.” Foreword In 1998 retired U. S. Air Force Colonel Gerald M. Adams published a booklet, “The Bells of Balangiga”. It was printed in Cheyenne, Wyoming and described the history of two bells taken from the ruble of a burned church belfry in the Philippines and brought to Fort D. A. Russell in 1904. Today they reside on F. E. Warren Air Force Base in a brick wall structure on Trophy Park, a grassy triangle near historic officers’ quarters. Gerry Adams enjoyed local history, wrote first about the bells for the Annals of Wyoming in 1987, and authored other historical articles. -

Chapter 1 Introduction As a Chinese Buddhist in Malaysia, I have been unconsciously entangled in a historical process of the making of modern Buddhism. There was a Chinese temple beside my house in Penang, Malaysia. The main deity was likely a deified imperial court officer, though no historical record documented his origin. A mosque serenely resided along the main street approximately 50 meters from my house. At the end of the street was a Hindu temple decorated with colorful statues. Less than five minutes’ walk from my house was a Buddhist association in a two-storey terrace. During my childhood, the Chinese temple was a playground. My friends and I respected the deities worshipped there but sometimes innocently stole sweets and fruits donated by worshippers as offerings. Each year, three major religious events were organized by the temple committee: the end of the first lunar month marked the spring celebration of a deity in the temple; the seventh lunar month was the Hungry Ghost Festival; and the eighth month honored, She Fu Da Ren, the temple deity’s birthday. The temple was busy throughout the year. Neighbors gathered there to chat about national politics and local gossip. The traditional Chinese temple was thus deeply rooted in the community. In terms of religious intimacy with different nearby temples, the Chinese temple ranked first, followed by the Hindu temple and finally, the mosque, which had a psychological distant demarcated by racial boundaries. I accompanied my mother several times to the Hindu temple. Once, I asked her why she prayed to a Hindu deity. -

Abellanosa1 Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Abstract. Working within the framework of post-colonial critique, this paper engages scholars who have written about Filipino philosophy. Without siding with either those who believe that there is an essential Filipino philosophy or those who say otherwise, the article argues that the Filipino philosophy question is an issue that is as unsettled as (the) Filipino identity. The problem however is such only insofar as Filipinos refuse to settle the fact that their colonial experience frustrates any attempt or endeavor to find the essential Filipino. This point of view should not be used as an argument against Filipino philosophy because, precisely, Filipino philosophy is the progressive attempt to understand the Filipino and his world, his lifeworld and systems, by interrogating the colonial experience and its constructs about the colonized, i.e., the Filipinos. Thus, Filipino philosophy is a resistance to the pervading notion that philosophy is exclusively Western such that those who live outside or if not unconnected to the privileged geography are nothing but mere subscribers to the privileged knowledge. It is considered to be the finest example of Indian brickwork and was highly influential in the development of later architectural traditions. Bodhgaya is a pilgrimage site since Siddhartha achieved enlightenment here and became Gautama Buddha. While the bodhi tree is of immense importance, the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodhgaya is an important reminder of the brickwork of that time. The Mahabodhi Temple is surrounded by stone ralling on all four sides. The design of the temple is unusual. It is, strictly speaking, neither Dravida nor Nagara. It is narrow like a Nagara temple, but it rises without curving, like a Dravida one. The monastic university of Nalanda is a mahavihara as it is a complex of several monasteries of various sizes. Till date, only a small portion of this ancient learning centre has been excavated as most of it lies buried under contemporary civilisation, making further excavations almost impossible. Most of the information about Nalanda is based on the records of Xuan Zang which states that the foundation of a monastery was laid by Kumargupta I in the fifth century CE.
