Catalyzing true change and developing a cohesive society through dozens of innovative projects across the country, the Foundation provides growth and empowerment opportunities to the many communities in Israel. We develop and support novel solutions and creative partnerships, while evaluating result-driven programs with true social impact. In keeping with its philosophy of strategic philanthropy, the Foundation established the Edmond de Rothschild Research Series, to promote excellence in research and expand the knowledge in the Foundation’s areas of interest. The booklet before you centers on Baron de Rothschild's ("Hanadiv's") Legacy, as part of the first research series which focused on three main areas: 1. Access to and Success in Higher Education: As part of its efforts to reduce social gaps, the Foundation strives to insure access to and success in higher education for periphery populations. It supports programs aimed at improving access to higher education options through preparation and guidance, reducing academic student dropout rates, and translating graduates’ education into commensurate employment. 2. Measurement and Evaluation: The Foundation seeks to constantly enhance its social impact and therefore, emphasizes measurement and evaluation of the projects it supports according to predefined, coherent criteria.

• Shadows Over the Land Without Shade: Iconizing the Israeli Kibbutz in the 1950S, Acting-Out Post Palestinian-Nakba Cultural Trauma
Volume One, Number One Shadows over the Land Without Shade: Iconizing the Israeli Kibbutz in the 1950s, acting-out post Palestinian-Nakba Cultural Trauma Lior Libman Abstract: The kibbutz – one of Zionism's most vital forces of nation-building and Socialist enterprise – faced a severe crisis with the foundation of the State of Israel as State sovereignty brought about major structural, political and social changes. However, the roots of this crisis, which I will describe as a cultural trauma, are more complex. They go back to the pioneers' understanding of their historical action, which emanated arguably from secularized and nationalized Hasidic theology, and viewed itself in terms of the meta-historical Zionist-Socialist narrative. This perception was no longer conceivable during the 1948 war and thereafter. The participation in a war that involved expulsion and killing of civilians, the construction of new kibbutzim inside emptied Palestinian villages and confiscation by old and new kibbutzim of Palestinian fields, all caused a fatal rift in the mind of those who saw themselves as fulfilling a universal humanistic Socialist model; their response was total shock. This can be seen in images of and from the kibbutz in this period: in front of a dynamic and troublesome reality, the Realism of kibbutz-literature kept creating pastoral-utopian, heroic-pioneering images. The novel Land Without Shade (1950) is one such example. Written by the couple Yonat and Alexander Sened, it tells the story of the establishment of Kibbutz Revivim in the Negev desert in the 1940s. By a symptomatic reading of the book’s representation of the kibbutz, especially in relation to its native Bedouin neighbors and the course of the war, I argue that the iconization of the kibbutz in the 1950s is in fact an acting-out of the cultural trauma of the kibbutz, the victimizer, who became a victim of the crash of its own self-defined identity.

  • The Promotion of Solar Energy in the Israeli Desert Itay Fischhendler, Dror Boymel & Maxwell T Boykoff
Environmental Communication, 2014 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/17524032.2014.979214 How Competing Securitized Discourses over Land Appropriation Are Constructed: The Promotion of Solar Energy in the Israeli Desert Itay Fischhendler, Dror Boymel & Maxwell T Boykoff Although solar farms are often favorably received by the public due to their contribution to clean energy, they are not conflict-free. In various contexts, this land- intensive technology often competes with other land uses like agriculture, nature reserves, and army training. As a result of this competition, interest groups often seek political leverage in order to prioritize their spatial use. Framing their uses as existential is one possible way to capture the attention of decision-makers. Yet, this securitization process may create a framing contest whereby different actors use similar securitization language to promote different land uses. This study is the first attempt to trace how this framing contest of securitized discourses over land appropriation is constructed. It is based on the Israeli experience of promoting solar energy in the Negev Desert, an area conceived as available to solar development. Through an analysis of protocols of Israeli policy-makers’ meetings between 2002 and 2011, the study documents the ways in which players adopt securitized language concerning various land uses such as energy, food, ecology, and traditional (national) security. The study found that the use of securitized framing varies between uses, forums, actors, and sectors. Yet competition between securities discourses remained uneven as, in the Israeli context, many players find it difficult to challenge the hegemonic role of traditional (national) security. One of the researchers suggested in his article that over 20 similar systems existed in the Galilee (Shahar 2003, 232-235).
