Mutations affecting lamina-associated polypep- 1234567890():,; tide 1 (LAP1) result in two discrete phenotypes of muscular dystrophy and progressive dystonia with cerebellar atrophy. We report 7 patients presenting at birth with severe pro- gressive neurological impairment, bilateral cataract, growth retardation and early lethality. All the patients are homozygous for a nonsense mutation in the TOR1AIP1 gene resulting in the loss of both protein isoforms LAP1B and LAP1C. Patient-derived fibroblasts exhibit changes in nuclear envelope morphology and large nuclear-spanning channels containing trapped cytoplasmic organelles. Decreased and inefficient cellular motility is also observed in these fibroblasts. Our study describes the complete absence of both major human LAP1 isoforms, underscoring their crucial role in early development and organogenesis.     Tisha B’Av through Josephus’s Eyes Rabbi Melanie Aron August 9, 2019 When something goes terribly wrong, it is likely that someone will ask why. Figuring out how things went south is important in order to prevent similar disasters in the future. So, when the Romans destroyed the Temple in the year 70 CE and brought an end to Jewish independence, we can imagine inquiries into what caused this tragedy. The answers found in the Talmud blame the destruction of the Temple on the baseless hatred said to have existed at that time and are the most frequently shared explanations. These answers even tell a story of an invitation delivered to the wrong person, resulting in an unwanted guest being embarrassingly evicted from a gathering. According to the rabbis, the revenge of the shunned guest is what sets in motion the process that ultimately leads to the Roman destruction of the Temple. One concern you might have with this explanation is that it is found in a text written 300–500 years after the churban, or the burning, occurred. Skeptics say this explanation may reflect more about concerns in the later era than about the true history of the original time period. But what if we had records from someone who lived at the time? Perhaps even from someone who was there at the gates of Jerusalem as the Roman army advanced? Well actually, we do have these records. They are the histories written by one Yosef ben Matityahu, later called Flavius Josephus. He was originally a general in the Judean army in the Galilee, but after being captured, he defected and became an aide-de-camp to the Romans and, eventually, an important historian.

    Karimeh Abbud The recent discovery of the studio portraits of Karimeh Abbud (‘Lady Photographer’ Early Woman as she used to identify herself) will Photographer undoubtedly compel us to re-evaluate the history of Palestinian photography. The (1896-1955) Abbud family is well known in Nazareth as a family of great learning. Her grandfather, Ahmad Mrowat Salim Abbud, studied pharmacy at the Syrian Protestant College in Beirut, and then later went on to become the senior pharmacist of the Nazareth English Hospital, founded in 1861 by the Armenian physician, Kaloost Vartan, and supported by the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society (EMMS).1 Her father was Rev. As’ad Abbud, a well known Protestant minister who served in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Haifa, and Nazareth.2 According to Rafiq Farah, an authority on the Protestant churches in Palestine, the family’s origin is from southern Lebanon. His name was Sai’ed and not As’ad, and he served as a lay preacher in Karimah Abbud and her camera, Haifa, Shefa Amr (1891-1899) and later joined the 1920s. Photo by C. Swaid. Prof. Fadia Nasser-Abu Alhija is professor at the School of Education of Tel Aviv University, where she heads the Department of Curriculum Planning and Instruction and the Program for Research, Measurement and Evaluation Methods. Previously, she was research coordinator for GRE testing at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, NJ (USA). Her main research topics are measurement and evaluation of gender- and culture-related achievements; evaluation of teachers and teaching, and the structural validity of testing methods. Prof. Nasser-Abu Alhija earned her Ph.D. in Research, Evaluation, Measurement and Statistical Methods from the University of Georgia (U.S.) in 1997. Prof. Nasser-Abu Alhija's areas of research are: research methods, measurement, evaluation and statistics. Her PhD thesis was: The Performance of Regression-Based Variations of the Screen Procedure for Determining the Number of Common Factors. In the last 30 years Prof. Nasser-Abu Alhija has taught and instructed mathematics at high school, college and university level.
