BRASILIA / DISTRITO FEDERAL HOST CITY
Brasilia is Brazil’s capital city and is inscribed in the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Uniform buildings, wide tree lined roads, parks and sectors developed with the wellbeing of the population and visitors in mind carry the signatures of master urbanist Lucio Costa and modern architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Brasilia’s monuments are unique and are ordered in such a way that they turn the city into an open air museum. The Brasilia Savannah like vegetation and lots of trees in urban areas, turn the federal capital, which is surrounded by the Paranoá Lake, into a green city. The city boasts a rate of 120m² of green areas per inhabitant - number four times higher than recommended
by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Brasilia in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil
National Mané Garrincha Stadium The National Mané Garrincha Stadium is set to be the first in history to be awarded the highest sustainability certificate, the Leed Platinum. The National Stadium will be the stage of the highest possible number of 2014 FIFA World Cup matches, seven. During the 2013 Confederations Cup, the stadium, which has seating capacity for 71 thousand people, was the stage of the opening match between Brazil and Japan.
The National Stadium in Brasilia is named after Manoel Francisco dos Santos, known as Mané Garrincha, a Brazilian football and cultural icon. Considered one of the greatest players of all times, Garrincha shone playing for Brazil and won two World Cup titles (1958 and 1962), together with Pelé and Nilton Santos. Known for his speed and skill, even though he had crooked legs that intrigued doctors and opponents, the forward succumbed to an early death at the age of 50. In 2013, Garrincha would have been 80.
