Individual Style United Spirit Ss17 Lookbook INDIVIDUAL STYLE UNITED SPIRIT SS17 LOOKBOOK 1 INTRODUCING DR. MARTENS: SS17 SEASONAL DIRECTION For SS17, Dr. Martens uses the 1990s global phenomenon of grunge as its core inspiration. This historically important counter-culture music scene exploded from the north-west coast of the USA, and in a short space of time dominated the world’s music industry, charts and live circuit. Dr. Martens found themselves at the heart of this massive explosion of alternative thinking and music – the 1460 was soon championed by millions of grunge fans worldwide. Festival culture also experienced a new popularity, which was also the moment that Dr. Martens sandals first experienced mass popularity. This is reflected in the collection, with new versions of long-standing classics, the re-introduction of ‘Lost Archive’ styles as well as seasonal sandals. The eventual evolution of grunge’s low-key, thrift store chic into high-end catwalk collections is also referenced. The individuality and eclectic nature of grunge fashion is also reflected in the use of tie-dye prints and an undercurrent of utility styling, as well as rugged leathers running through the offering. This mass of influences has been consumed and used to create a collection that references the 1990s, and in particular grunge, but with product that is sharply relevant and very contemporary. One such characteristic was the use of tie dye in grunge fashion, which was essentially driven by the fact it was an affordable and individual option. This idea has inspired the exclusive all-over tie dye prints used across both footwear and accessories for the range, all completely vegan. • “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson
The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. I will illustrate the ways in which the process of signification functions within rock music to construct masculinities and within subcultures to negotiate authenticity. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my academic advisor Dr. William Echard for his continued patience with me during the thesis writing process and for his invaluable guidance. I also would like to send a big thank you to Dr. James Deaville, the head of Music and Culture program, who has given me much assistance along the way.

The 20 Year Trend Cycle: What Is Next? - FIB | FIB 10/03/2016 11:06 The 20 Year Trend Cycle: What Is Next? If you live long enough, you will probably see the fashion trends of your youth cycling back into popularity. Analysts are trying to get to the bottom of this mystery, by looking at the recurring trends throughout fashion history. The most cyclical movement in the history of the fashion industry is referred to as the “20-Year Rule.” This rule expresses the concept that something popular now will be popular again in 20 years, give or take a few years. Although new trends are always emerging, they are often modernisations or interpretations of the trends we have already seen. 90s Men’s Grunge Fashion, Photo Credit: swipelife.com/Michael Lavine According to Laver’s Law, when a trend is in fashion, it is ‘smart’; one year before this, it is ‘daring;’ and 20 years later, it becomes ‘ridiculous.’ 50 years, Laver said, was how long it took for a trend to begin to creep back into style. About Style have outlined the process of trend popularity, with fashion designers always on the look out for ‘what’s new’. First, the emerging trend is highly sought after, being found on red carpets and runways, as well as music videos and movies. Next comes the ‘emulation’ phase, where everyone jumps on board, with the trend https://fashionindustrybroadcast.com/2016/03/09/20-year-trend-cycle-next/ Page 1 of 4 The 20 Year Trend Cycle: What Is Next? - FIB | FIB 10/03/2016 11:06 being found in magazines and on TV.

It’s a word that was used to describe a number chains of different “alternative” bands from the region in 1980s, and then also into the 1990s with bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney and Screaming Trees. The first noted instance of referring to a Seattle band as “grunge,” was in a 1981 letter by Mark Arm, according to Clark Humphrey in his account of the Seattle music scene, Loser. pearl jam Bruce Pavitt later claimed to have popularized the term as a musical label in 1987, when he wrote some promotional copy for Green River, describing the band as “ultra-loose grunge that destroyed the morals of a generation”. In the late 80s, “grunge” did actually define a sound – high levels of distortion, feedback, fuzz effects, a fusion of punk and metal influences. Many of these bands were on either the C/Z or Sub Pop record labels. Jack Endino, the so-called “Godfather of Grunge” recorded Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Green River, Nirvana and Blood Circus between 1984 and 1989.

  • Chapter 5 Design and Realization
CHAPTER 5 DESIGN AND REALIZATION 5.1 Visual Research The author conducted a visual research to search and look for inspiration visually. It consists of the mind map of the concept that the author wanted to pursue in the collection, and the inspired images that was found through primary researches and secondary researches. The visuals from the primary researches are from the thrift stores that the author went to in order to see the silhouettes, while secondary researches are from the Internet such as WGSN, fashion blogs, and websites. From the researches, the author then will analyze in order to inject the inspirations to the collection. 5.1.1 Mind Mapping In order to create a collection, the author made a mind map to develop the inspirations and concept. The mind map that the author made was varied because of the progression of the diverse cultures that the author wanted to inject in the first collection, and developing the final chosen concept along the way. 93 Figure 5.1 Mind Map on Grunge Culture Source: Author’s Image Grunge Culture inspired the author for the collection. However, since Grunge Culture is broad culture to be develop as a collection, the author did the research on Grunge music, where it is a medium to self-express and speak out about their lives. The music supports how men can be fragile, and how women can be aggressive. However, the author would like to focus more on the effect of Grunge music towards the female society where it talks about the revolution of female musicians to advocate feminism.

Jadranka Zlomislić Osijek, 2014. Korać 2 Abstract This paper explores grunge, a music genre that developed in Seattle, Washington during the 1990s. The aim is to show how grunge contributed to changes primarily in the American society as it moved from underground to mainstream and became a primary pop cultural movement in the 90s. It also became a subculture which has its special characteristics like a certain way of dressing, behaving etc. The paper follows the evolution of grunge from its beginning in the 1980s. Thanks to Sub Pop, an independent record label, and its creators Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt and their sense for business and self-promotion, grunge moved from underground to mainstream at the beginning of the 1990s with Nirvana’s album Nevermind as a landmark and their single “Smells like Teen Spirit” as the anthem of the Generation X. Furthermore, the paper explores how musicians engaged in different aspects of society like politics, campaigning and activism and how grunge became an essential part of fashion statements and different forms of art such as movies.
