The Historian as Novelist John Salmon Delivered March 1, 2001 To start with, let me say that the title of the novel that is the subject of this talk is misleading. It reads: "The Muskets of Gascony: The Revolt of Bernard d'Audijos by Armand Daudeyos, translated by J. H. M. Salmon." This is false. When you write a historical novel things do seem to become falsified at times. I am the actual author, and Armand Daudeyos, the supposed descendant of the hero (Daudeyos is the Gascon form of d'Audijos) is a faction. I adopted this device for several reasons. First, it adds an air of mystery to pretend that one has discovered the manuscript of a historical novel based on real events in the seventeenth century and written in the Romantic vogue of the nineteenth century. Second, it allows me to insert a "translator's preface" explaining how close the book is to what actually happened. And third, it protects me from the reproaches of my colleagues for betraying my profession. -

(Letter to Jean Letronne, Director of the Collège de France, January 1848) This house is old; it knows a lot, touched up and whitewashed to look new as it may be. Centuries have lived in it and each one has left something of itself. Whether you perceive them or not, the traces are there, never doubt it for a moment. Just as in a human heart! Humans and houses, we all bear the imprint of ages past. As young men, we carry within us innumerable ancient notions and feelings of whose presence we are unaware. These traces of ancient times are mixed up inside us, indistinct, often inopportune. -

JULES MICHELET: NATIONAL HISTORY, BIOGRAPHY, AUTOBIOGRAPHY1 By Lionel Gossman Echoes of lived experience are to be found in the work of many historians. Writing about the past is usually also, indirectly, a way of writing about the present. The past is read through the present and the present through a vision of the past. It has often been noted, for instance, that the author’s reaction to the world around him is reflected in the work of Jacob Burckhardt, the great nineteenth-century Swiss historian, who was born into one of the leading patrician families of the old free city of Basel at a moment when these merchant families, rulers of the little city-state since the Renaissance, were coming under increasingly uncomfortable pressure from the political movements of the time. As examples of such reflections of personal experience one could cite Burckhardt’s often severe criticism, in the Griechische Kulturgeschichte, of the ancient Greek polis and in particular of ancient democracy, and his portraits of talented and distinguished citizens who either fled their city after the coming of democratic rule or, like Diogenes and Epicurus, took the path of inner exile. In Burckhardt’s writing, however, the personal experience is not intentional or programmatic. With Michelet, in contrast – whose work, as it happens, Burckhardt knew and admired – history is explicitly presented, in the historian’s reflection on his craft, not only as a form of bio-graphy, of writing about a living being (France), but of auto-bio-graphy, of writing about a living being that is identified as oneself. -

Forthcoming in: S.Palmié and C. Stewart (eds), The Varieties of Historical Experience. London: Routledge, 2019. Abstract: In this chapter we map out an interdisciplinary approach to historical experience, understood as the affects and sensations activated when people, in a given present, enter into relationship with the past. In the nineteenth century, professional historiography arose by embracing principles of the scientific method such as rationality, impartiality and a dispassionate approach to research, thereby displacing genres such as poetry, art, and literary fiction that had previously conveyed knowledge of the past in more sublime modes. While the dichotomy between subjective empathy and objective understanding continued to be negotiated within the history profession, in wider society people continued to engage in all manner of sensory relationships with the past including spiritualism, psychometry and occasional bouts of Stendhal Syndrome. Technologies such as photography, phonography, and film provided new media that incited yet richer sensorial and sentimental experiences of the past. With the advent of video games and virtual reality beginning in the the late twentieth century, yet more immediate engagements with the past have proliferated. This essay surveys this variety of historical experiences in Western societies; their social relationship with professional historiography; the present(ist) demand for a personal experience of the past; and the future of historical experience portended by digital technologies. A sudden heaviness overpowers me, and I grope through the surrounding darkness to find an opening that will restore me to the air and the light of day. —Alexis de Tocqueville The world, it is true, appears to me to march less and less toward the greatness I had imagined. —Alexis de Tocqueville Alexis de Tocqueville had a very broad understanding of “poetry,” which he described as “the search for and depiction of the ideal.”1 Poetry, on his view, was antithetical to the mere “representation of reality,” because it transcends the empirically given and aims to depict an elevated and enhanced spiritual significance. In democratic ages traditional poetic devotion to transcendental ideals undergoes a radical change. In these contexts, with their pervasive “love of physical pleasure, self-improvement, [and] competition,” individuals become enthralled by the practical and profane needs of daily life. The imagination is “not snuffed out,” Tocqueville writes, but “it devotes itself almost entirely to the idea of what is useful and to the portrayal of reality.”2 Rather than look to the heavens or to the ancient past, “the traditional springs of poetry,” democracy draws the imagination to “man himself,” but man stripped of personal qualities and characteristics. -

It asks how differences of sex figured in anti-clerical writings (particularly those of Jules Michelet). And it argues that the conflation of women and religion, an aspect of their simultaneous privatization and their designation as "irrational," helped secure the place of the difference of sex as the ontological ground for political and social organization in the nations of the West from the seventeenth century onwards. Soros Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Martin Jay, Chair Heinrich Heine’s body of work presents seeming disparities between poetry and prose, Romantic lyricism and bitter polemics, love and hate, manifesting the complexity of the author and his vision. Another fundamental yet elusive dimension of Heine’s work involves his Jewish background. Hannah Arendt provocatively described Heine as “the only German Jew who could truthfully describe himself as both a German and a Jew,” in part because he recognized their implicit conflict. His ambivalent attitude toward Jews and Judaism and German-Jewish identity is difficult to separate from his contentiousness and humor. Heine has not been taken seriously enough in part because of a disinclination to approach him as a thinker, including what the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk called Heine’s “satirical, polemical… holy nonseriousness.” At stake is a ‘politics of literature’ in the sense of how literature is evaluated or categorized. Our task is to locate Heine’s original voice and his historical and contemporary significance. This study addresses Heine’s work largely in relation to his predecessors, contemporaries, and followers. Heine’s belated dialogue with the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe involved their shared opposition to Christianity, nationalism, and Romanticism as a literary movement, as well as their love poetry reflecting the connection between their lives and their work. -

Udovic, C.M. In the political and socio-economic milieu of nineteenth-century France the privileges enjoyed by the elite classes were no longer conveyed as a matter of noble inheritance. The French Revolution had destroyed the hierarchical social structures of the Ancien Regime through the abolition of traditional privileges which benefitted the nobility and corporate bodies such as the University. As part of its intended reconstruction of French Society, the Revolution reorganized societal institutions in ways designed to create and sustain a new elite. Ozanam's presence as a university student in the Latin Quarter of Paris between 1831 and 1836, when he received his diploma, represented time spent serving a sort of professional apprenticeship to enter the elite class. During these years he was among several thousand young bourgeois men from the provinces (5,000 in 1830; 7,500 in 1835) who annually migrated to the city the writer Honoré Balzac eloquently described as the "capitol of learning." Part of the attraction of Paris was indeed the presence of its prestigious universities.
