Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

April 7, 1818 - Pierre-François Martin and Marie-Anne- Fanie Boureau were married in Lyon in the Church of Saint-Martin- Abbé Bourganel. They lived at 4 rue Vaubecourt. They were the parents of Louis Martin. July 29, 1819 - The birth of Pierre Martin in Nantes. He was the oldest brother of Louis Martin. He died in a shipwreck when still very young. September 18, 1820 - The birth of Marie-Anne Martin in Nantes. She was the oldest sister of Louis Martin. La prison romantique: Silvio Pellico, Stendhal Pendant que certains auteurs du XIXe siècle, comme Tolstoï, Dickens et Dostoïevski, font de la prison un lieu permettant d’accéder à la connaissance et d’articuler une attitude critique vis-à-vis de la société de l’époque, d’autres utilisent l’enfermement comme un miroir de leur âme blessée par un monde malveillant et cruel. Déçus, trahis par la société, las d’un rationalisme qui brime leurs sentiments, ils voient dans la prison le seul refuge pouvant les protéger des malheurs de la vie sur terre. Loin de représenter une punition, la privation de la liberté devient le moyen pour fuir une réalité hostile, pour retourner en quelque sorte dans le ventre de la mère1 et se soustraire ainsi aux contraintes que la vie quotidienne impose aux sentiments et à l’imagination. Là-dessus viennent se greffer tous les sujets chers au romantisme : l’amour, la solitude, le plaisir de la souffrance, la rêverie.2 Déjà présents dans le « Roi Lear »3 de Shakespeare et dans « Le prisonnier de Chillon » de Byron, ces thèmes seront repris au XIXe siècle par Baudelaire, Gérard de Nerval, Stendhal et, en Italie, par Silvio Pellico. Au-delà des différences qui caractérisent ces auteurs, ceux-ci partagent le même désir pour un lieu en dehors du temps et de l’espace, pourvoyeur d’une paix de l’esprit que le monde réel n’est pas à même d’offrir. La thèse de la « prisonisation », selon ces auteurs, doit être lue à l’envers : ce n’est pas la prison qui crée une dépendance, mais bien le besoin de solitude et de sérénité intérieure inhérent à tout être 1 Cf. -

Here all is friendly. These little creatures do not speak to the world, but they work for it. They leave it to their sublime father, the Ocean, to speak for them. He speaks in their place and they have their say through his great voice. (Michelet, La Mer 1.iii)2 I had come to look on the whole of natural history as a branch of the political. All the living species, each in its humble right, came knock- ing at the door and claiming admittance to the bosom of Democracy. Why should their more advanced brothers refuse the protection of law to those to whom the universal Father has given a place in the harmony of the law of the universe? Such was the source of my renewal, the belated vita nuova which led me little by little to the nat- ural sciences. The Historian as Novelist John Salmon Delivered March 1, 2001 To start with, let me say that the title of the novel that is the subject of this talk is misleading. It reads: "The Muskets of Gascony: The Revolt of Bernard d'Audijos by Armand Daudeyos, translated by J. H. M. Salmon." This is false. When you write a historical novel things do seem to become falsified at times. I am the actual author, and Armand Daudeyos, the supposed descendant of the hero (Daudeyos is the Gascon form of d'Audijos) is a faction. I adopted this device for several reasons. First, it adds an air of mystery to pretend that one has discovered the manuscript of a historical novel based on real events in the seventeenth century and written in the Romantic vogue of the nineteenth century. Second, it allows me to insert a "translator's preface" explaining how close the book is to what actually happened. And third, it protects me from the reproaches of my colleagues for betraying my profession.
