The faces of history. The imagined portraits of the Merovingian kings at Versailles (1837-1842) Margot Renard, University of Grenoble ‘One would expect people to remember the past and imagine the future. But in fact, when discoursing or writing about history, they imagine it in terms of their own experience, and when trying to gauge the future they cite supposed analogies from the past; till, by a double process of repeti- tion, they imagine the past and remember the future’. (Namier 1942, 70) The historian Christian Amalvi observes that during the first half of the nine- teenth century, most of the time history books presented a ‘succession of dyn- asties (Merovingians, Carolingians, Capetians), an endless row of reigns put end to end (those of the ‘rois fainéants’1 and of the last Carolingians especially), without any hierarchy, as a succession of fanciful portraits of monarchs, almost interchangeable’ (Amalvi 2006, 57). The Merovingian kings’ portraits, exhib- ited in the Museum of French History at the palace of Versailles, could be de- scribed similarly: they represent a succession of kings ‘put end to end’, with imagined ‘fanciful’ appearances, according to Amalvi. However, this vision dis- regards their significance for early nineteenth-century French society. Replac- ing these portraits in the broader context of contemporary history painting, they appear characteristic of a shift in historical apprehension. The French history painting had slowly drifted away from the great tradition established by Jacques-Louis David’s moralistic and heroic vision of ancient history. The 1820s saw a new formation of the historical genre led by Paul De- laroche's sentimental vision and attention to a realistic vision of history, restored to picturesqueness. -

AHR Forum The Kids Are All Right: On the “Turning” of Cultural History JAMES W. COOK To situate this introduction, it will be useful to focus briefly on just what con- stituted the cultural turn. Victoria E. Bonnell and Lynn Hunt RUN A FEW WEB SEARCHES FOR the term “cultural turn,” and you will begin to grasp the scope of an increasingly viral concept. In Google Books alone, you will find more than 100,000 citations, the bibliographic traces of the concept’s extended wandering.1 Switch to the search engine at OCLC WorldCat, ArticleFirst, or ECO, and the num- bers become less daunting, somewhere on the order of a few hundred hits. In these more specialized databases, however, the searchable content is limited to titles and abstracts. So what you are really seeing is the initial layers of a much larger con- versation: the figurative tip of the bibliographic iceberg.2 What might the iceberg tell us? Most of all, perhaps, it provides a wide-angle view of the concept’s current ubiquity. Here all is friendly. These little creatures do not speak to the world, but they work for it. They leave it to their sublime father, the Ocean, to speak for them. He speaks in their place and they have their say through his great voice. (Michelet, La Mer 1.iii)2 I had come to look on the whole of natural history as a branch of the political. All the living species, each in its humble right, came knock- ing at the door and claiming admittance to the bosom of Democracy. Why should their more advanced brothers refuse the protection of law to those to whom the universal Father has given a place in the harmony of the law of the universe? Such was the source of my renewal, the belated vita nuova which led me little by little to the nat- ural sciences. Unlike many countries, France generally agrees that one person founded its nation. That person was Charlemagne. Why do we need a King? Most French people today do not think that a king is needed. Much of this negative way of thinking about the Founding fathers of many European countries stems from the American way of thinking. The Americans revolted against British royalty and helped to influence the ideology that resulted in the French acts of patricide that capitulated power in the French Revolution. Why did the French Revolution happen? Most people believe it was a class war between the proletariats, bourgeoisie, and aristocracy. However, it may have been something altogether different from the story that most historians pieced together and accepted as truth. In fact, there may be certain key events that happened in secret on the world stage that most historians either do not know about or felt uncomfortable revealing to the world. The secret society of Jacobites asserts that a descendant of Charlemagne returned to France around 9 SECRET SOCIETY OF JACOBITES 1747, and claimed his rightful Throne as the Heir of the Founding Father of France. A blood feud for the divine right of Kings ensued and a Capetian and Carolingian blow for blow, life for a life exchange took place leaving France headless. In other words, the French Revolution that ensued not only insulted the Patriarch of France, Charlemagne, it rendered the French less powerful in the World Theatre. -

The Historian as Novelist John Salmon Delivered March 1, 2001 To start with, let me say that the title of the novel that is the subject of this talk is misleading. It reads: "The Muskets of Gascony: The Revolt of Bernard d'Audijos by Armand Daudeyos, translated by J. H. M. Salmon." This is false. When you write a historical novel things do seem to become falsified at times. I am the actual author, and Armand Daudeyos, the supposed descendant of the hero (Daudeyos is the Gascon form of d'Audijos) is a faction. I adopted this device for several reasons. First, it adds an air of mystery to pretend that one has discovered the manuscript of a historical novel based on real events in the seventeenth century and written in the Romantic vogue of the nineteenth century. Second, it allows me to insert a "translator's preface" explaining how close the book is to what actually happened. And third, it protects me from the reproaches of my colleagues for betraying my profession. -

NOTES AND NEWS Dr. Robert Fruin, the doyen of Dutch historical professors, died at Leyden on January 29 (or 30), aged seventy-five. From 1860 until his retirement, a few years ago, he was professor of Dutch history at Ley den. Though he published no great work after the issue of his impor tant TienJaren uit den Tachtigiarigen Oorlog, in 1859, he wrote a large number of important monographs, was the teacher of many if not most of the Dutch historians of the present time, and won unmeasured influ ence by his learning, wisdom and fairness. Professor Alphons Huber of the University of Vienna, author of a highly valued but now unfinished history of Austria in five volumes, and of sevt!ral studies in medieval numismatics, died in Vienna on Novem ber 23, aged 64. Dr. Gustav Gilbert, professor in the gymnasium at Gotha and author of the well-known Handbuch der griechischm Staatsaltertlll'imer, died on December 24. Mr. Edward G. Mason, formerly president of the Chicago Historical Society, died on December IS, at the age of 59. An eminent lawyer and a good citizen, his title to remembrance among historical students rests partly upon his active exertions in behalf of the society mentioned, especially in securing for it its present impressive building and a large portion of its valuable collections, and partly upon those minor writings for which alone his professional occupations left him leisure. The papers which he wrote were chiefly essays in the history of Illinois in the eigh teenth century. Lewis H. Boutell died at Washington, D. -

SCOTT WHEN I SUBMITTED MY “GENDER” ARTICLE to the AHR in 1986, its title was “Is Gender a Useful Category of Historical Analysis?” The editors made me turn the question into a statement because, they said, interrogatives were not allowed in article titles. Dutifully, I complied with this convention, though I thought the revision eliminated a certain rhetorical punch. Some twenty years later, the articles prepared for this forum seem to answer the question in the affirmative, and they do so with a rich variety of examples from recent historical writing. -

The critic should ask a third question: what kind of emancipation is involved? Karl Marx, On the Jewish Question, 1843. We must not think that by saying yes to sex, one says no to power; on the contrary, one tracks along the course laid out by the general deployment of sexuality. Michel Foucault, The History of Sexuality, Vol. I, 1976. Emancipation is a tricky word. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it denotes the lifting of “restraints imposed by superior physical force or legal obligation.”2 In Roman law emancipation referred to the freeing of women or children from the patria potestas— the father’s power. In English civil law Catholics were enfranchised by the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829. Slaves in the United States were manumitted in 1863; the terms set forth in Abraham Lincoln’s famous Emancipation Proclamation. (Although emancipation and manumission are now used synonymously, in ancient Rome, manumission referred specifically to slaves or servants, emancipation to family members.) Figuratively, the word has been extended to mean liberation from “intellectual, moral, or spiritual fetters.”3 Here the issue is not so much action by an external agency, as it is an internal matter, a change in consciousness. -
