    Migrating 'Ndrangheta in the case of Australia. A historical perspective. Abstract This paper attempts to present the phenomenon of the ‘ndrangheta - criminal organisation from Calabria, South of Italy, and most powerful among the Italian mafias – through its migrating routes. In particular, the paper, by focusing on the peculiar case of Australia, aims at showing the overlapping of migrating flows with criminal colonisation, which has proven to be a ‘policy’ of this particular mafia. The paper uses the very thin literature on the subject alongside official reports on migration and crime, mainly from Italian sources, to start an historical journey on the migration of people from Calabria to Australia in various moments of the last century. The aim is to prove that, alongside the dreams for a better life, also criminal habits migrated with people, reinforced to this day through tight family ties. The topic is largely unexplored and is still underreported among Australian institutions and scholars, which is why this paper chooses a historical narration as main methodology to describe the principal threads in this very new field of research.     'NDRANGHETA LA ’NDRANGHETA SI URBANIZZA E SI SPACCA Il 26 ottobre 1969, a Serro Juncari, una radura ai piedi di Montalto, sull’Aspromonte, si tiene l’ultimo summit della ‘ndrangheta agro- pastorale. In questo summit si parla di inasprire la lotta contro la polizia e allearsi con la destra eversiva. A questa riunione erano presenti oltre 150 mafiosi convenuti da tutte le parti. La Questura intervenne e l’operazione Montalto portò davanti ai giudici del tribunale di Locri circa 72 presunti affiliati alla ‘ndrangheta. L’operazione venne coordinata dal commissario della polizia di Stato Alberto Sabatino. In questi anni avviene un “rinnovamento della ’ndrangheta” da parte di Mommo Piromalli assieme ai De Stefano. Adesso lo scopo della ’ndrangheta è quello di infiltrarsi tra i magistrati, i poliziotti, i politici, gli avvocati e commercialisti. Venne così creata all’interno della ‘ndrangheta un’enclave detta “Santa”. La sezione Santa era formata da 33 persone alle quali era permesso di affiliarsi a logge coperte dalla massoneria. Certe persone all’interno della ‘ndrangheta non volevano riconoscere la sezione santa perché le regole di questa nuova società consentivano di tradire ed effettuare delazioni pur di tutelare un santista. La ’ndrangheta già a questi tempi aveva capito che per acquistare potere e ricchezza bisognava entrare in politica. Il nuovo corso della ’ndrangheta coincise con la politica degli interventi straordinari nel Mezzogiorno. Oltre alla speculazione edilizia , alle grandi opere pubbliche e alle varie risorse legate all’agricoltura e alla pastorizia, la ‘ndrangheta mise le mani anche sul controllo dei traffici marittimi come il contrabbando di sigarette. Furono la costruzione del quinto centro siderurgico e il completamento dell’autostrada del Sole nel tratto compreso tra Salerno e Reggio Calabria a imprimere una nuova svolta al rapporto politica -‘ndrangheta, con la creazione di lobby tra mafiosi, politici e settori del mondo economico e finanziario locale e nazionale.

    Altruism and Sacrifice: Mafia Free Gift Giving in South Italy Stavroula Pipyrou, Department of Social Anthropology, University of St Andrews Abstract As a social phenomenon that torments modern states, mafia receives considerable political and legal attention. The term mafia itself is often directly related to criminality and violence. Thus far violence has been employed as an analytical construct that could explain compliance with the mafia ethos. Nevertheless this schema fails to take into consideration possible discourses that make mafia tolerable. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in Reggio Calabria, South Italy, this paper explores distinctive mafia notions of giving and charity. Mafia free gifts, albeit rare, are paradoxical in the sense that through elaborate speech registers both the donor and the recipient debase the very act of gift-giving so as not to be bound in relations of reciprocity and obligation. These mafia gifts, which have so far escaped anthropological attention, are conceptualised as tropes of worldly imagining aspiring to non-worldly discourses. Status, umiltà, duty and sacrifice frame free gifting as accorded to the overt religious rhetoric of mafia hierarchy. In this paper I argue that a) free gifting embraces a series of complex non-violent discourses which relate closely to religious duty and altruism but work alongside capitalist systems b) in principal these gifts do not bind people, yet are imbued with the potential of a relation. Più di altri poteri mafiosi, la ndrangheta fa del silenzio un elemento distintivo. An- cor oggi la forza della 'ndrangheta, una delle più potenti e violente organizzazioni criminali del mondo, sta nella se- gretezza. Mentre indagini e studi hanno in qualche modo gettato una luce sulle sue “consorelle”, mafia e camorra, la struttura della 'ndrangheta rimane ancora oggi meno conosciuta sotto il velo dell’omertà e protetta dalla pau- ra. Un po’ perché per molto tempo la 'ndrangheta è stata sottostimata rispetto alle altre organizzazioni, considerata erroneamente più arcaica e in un certo senso residuale: un po’ perché i legami di 'ndrangheta sono spesso legami fa- miliari, dunque quasi indissolubili. Per questo sembra ancor più necessario scrivere un manua- le su questa organizzazione criminale, uno strumento che accompagni le ragazze e i ragazzi nella loro esperienza nei Campi della Legalità Arci in Calabria. Il nostro obiettivo a lungo termine con questo progetto di “Appunti di an- timafia” è quello di poter fornire alle ragazze e ai ragazzi che ogni anno partecipano ai Campi della legalità che si svolgono in tutta Italia una panoramica ampia e articolata nei diversi territori della storia del potere mafioso, della sua struttura anche nell’attualità e dei movimenti sociali che si oppongono ad esso.
