Compressed Development Abstract: In this paper we argue that the path of economic development for would-be developers has changed fundamentally since the 1980s. Focusing on East Asia, and taking a broad perspective that spans the economic and social dimensions of development, we contend that the path charted by the “late development” model has become all but impassible. The path is now better conceived as one of “compressed development.” Key differences are 1) the extent and consequences of compression and 2) the primary mode of engagement with the world economy – via global value chains. Compressed development forces states to address a number of simultaneous challenges, resulting in “policy stretch.” We identify key features of an “adaptive state” suited to navigating the path of compressed development.

Focusing on East Asia, we contend that the path followed by ‘late developers’ has shifted to one that can best be described as ‘compressed development.’ We introduce the notion of compressed development to highlight the new policy dilemmas and choices that developing countries face today, which we characterize as ‘policy stretch.’ In doing do, we hope to move debates beyond late development defensiveness on the one hand, and glib globalization on the other, through the use of a broad, interdisciplinary and exploratory framework. As in the late development model, compressed development is an ideal type informed by empirical trends. There are special circumstances in the path of any would-be developer; the test of the model’s usefulness nonetheless will be tested in its application to countries like China, Vietnam and India.

  • The Concept of Vehicle Design for Chinese Marketing
The Concept of Vehicle Design for Chinese Marketing A thesis Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Industrial Design By Qianyuan Zhao Under the Supervision of Prof. Bill Green Dr. Eddi Pianca Faculty of Art and Design University of Canberra, Australia January 2016 Abstract With the rapid development of China’s economy and the rise of Chinese living standards, Chinese demand for private car ownership is increasing significantly. China is already the world’s largest automobile market and is coveted by many giant automotive enterprises. However it is extremely difficult to cater to China’s automobile market demands because of particular Chinese conditions such as the unique culture, the diverse requirements of a geographically dispersed population, fastidious consumers and crowded traffic. The problem is that there is very limited literature in this area to guide car designers when designing a car for the Chinese market. This research examines the special demands of private cars for Chinese consumers, identifies particular elements of vehicle design that are important for successful Chinese marketing, and incorporates them into a new computer-generated 3D model.
