Laws regarding the Megila Reading:
• We are obligated to hear the Megillah reading twice: once on Purim eve and again on Purim day. • It is crucial to hear every word of the Megillah reading. As such, graggers should be sounded only when Haman’s name is read, at which point the reader waits until quiet is restored before resuming. (According to Chabad custom, the graggers are sounded only when Haman’s name is mentioned in conjunction with an adjective, e.g. “son of Hamdata,” or “the Jew hater.”) It is also advisable to turn off your cell phone for the duration of the reading. • Stand while the reader recites the blessings and answer “Amen.” You may be seated while the Megillah is read. • The verses in bold are read aloud, in unison, by the congregation, and are then repeated by the reader. • When listening to the Shehecheyanu blessing before the daytime reading, have in mind that this blessing also covers the other mitzvot of the day: charity for the poor, sending food packages, and the festive Purim meal.

And the king מָ רְדֳּכָ י ; וְאֶ ת- מַאֲמַ ר מָרְדֳּכַ י אֶסְתֵּ ר עֹשָׂ ה , made a great banquet for all his princes and his כַּאֲשֶׁ רהָיְתָ הבְאָמְנָהאִ תּוֹ . servants, even Esther's feast, and he granted a release to the provinces and gave gifts according to כא בַּיָּמִ יםהָהֵ ם , וּמָרְדֳּכַ ייוֹשֵׁ בבְּשַׁעַ ר- the bounty of the king. And when the maidens were הַמֶּלֶךְ ; קָצַ ף בִּגְתָ ן וָתֶרֶ שׁ שְׁנֵי- סָרִ יסֵ י הַמֶּלֶךְ , gathered a second time, and Mordechai was sitting in מִשֹּׁמְרֵ י הַסַּ ף , וַיְבַקְ שׁוּ לִשְׁלֹחַ יָד , בַּמֶּ לֶךְ the king's gate . And the king said to her, "What concerns מָצָ אתִ יחֵ ןבְּעֵ ינֵיהַמֶּלֶךְ , וְאִ ם- עַ ל- הַמֶּלֶךְ טוֹ ב , you, Queen Esther, and what is your petition? Even to לָתֵ ת אֶ ת- שְׁאֵלָתִ י , וְלַעֲשׂוֹ תאֶ ת- בַּקָּשָׁתִ י -- יָבוֹא half the kingdom, it will be given to you." And the king said to Esther during the wine banquet, "What is your petition? וַיָּבוֹ א אֶ ל- בֵּ יתוֹ ; וַיִּשְׁלַ ח וַיָּבֵ א אֶ ת- אֹהֲבָ יו , It shall be granted you. And what is your request?
וְאֶ ת- זֶרֶ שׁ אִשְׁ תּוֹ. יא וַיְסַפֵּ ר לָהֶ ם הָמָ ן אֶ ת- Even up to half the kingdom, it shall be fulfilled." Then כְּ בוֹ ד עָשְׁ רוֹ , וְרֹ ב בָּנָיו ; וְאֵ ת כָּ ל- אֲשֶׁ ר גִּדְּ לוֹ Esther replied and said, "My petition and my request הַמֶּלֶךְ וְאֵ ת אֲשֶׁ ר נִשְּׂ אוֹ , עַ ל- הַשָּׂרִ ים וְעַבְדֵ י ,are as follows]: If I have found favor in the king's eyes] הַמֶּלֶךְ . יב וַיֹּאמֶ ר , הָמָ ן -- אַ ף לֹ א- הֵבִ יאָ ה and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and to אֶסְתֵּ רהַמַּלְכָּ העִ ם- הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶ ל- הַמִּשְׁתֶּ האֲשֶׁ ר- fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come to the עָשָׂתָ ה , כִּ י אִ ם- אוֹתִ י ; וְגַם- לְמָחָ ר אֲנִ י קָ רוּא- banquet that I will make for them, and tomorrow I will לָ הּ , עִ ם- הַמֶּלֶ .ךְ יג וְכָ ל- זֶה , אֵ ינֶנּוּ שֹׁ וֶה לִ י: do the king's bidding." And Haman said to the King, "A man whom יֵעָשֶׂ הלָאִ ישׁאֲשֶׁ רהַמֶּלֶךְ חָפֵ ץבִּ יקָ רוֹ . יב וַיָּשָׁ ב the king wishes to honor . Let them bring the royal מָרְדֳּכַ י , אֶ ל- שַׁעַ רהַמֶּלֶךְ ; וְהָמָ ןנִדְחַ ףאֶ ל- בֵּ יתוֹ , raiment that the king wore and the horse that the king אָבֵ לוַחֲ פוּירֹ אשׁ. יג וַיְסַפֵּ רהָמָ ןלְזֶרֶ שׁאִשְׁ תּוֹ , rode upon, and the royal crown should be placed on וּלְכָ ל- אֹהֲבָ יו , אֵ ת , כָּ ל- אֲשֶׁ ר קָרָ הוּ ; וַיֹּאמְ רוּ לוֹ his head. And let the raiment and the horse be חֲכָמָ יו וְזֶ רֶ שׁ אִשְׁ תּוֹ , אִ ם מִזֶּרַ ע הַיְּהוּדִ ים delivered into the hand of one of the king's most noble princes and let them dress the man whom the king מָרְדֳּכַ יאֲשֶׁ רהַחִ לּוֹתָ לִנְפֹּ ללְפָנָיולֹ א- תוּכַ ללוֹ - wishes to honor, and let them parade him on the horse

And Esther said, "An adversary and an enemy, פרקח this evil Haman!" And Haman became terrified before the king and the queen. And the king arose in his fury א בַּ יּוֹ ם הַ הוּא , נָתַ ן הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲחַשְׁ וֵרוֹשׁ from the wine feast to the orchard garden, and Haman לְאֶסְתֵּ ר הַמַּלְכָּ ה , אֶ ת- בֵּ ית הָמָ ן , צֹרֵ ר stood to beg for his life of Queen Esther, for he saw היהודיים ( הַיְּהוּדִ ים) ; וּמָרְדֳּכַ י , בָּ א לִפְנֵי that evil was determined against him by the king. Then הַמֶּלֶךְ -- -כִּ י הִ גִּ ידָ ה אֶסְתֵּ ר , מַ ה הוּא- לָ הּ. ב the king returned from the orchard garden to the house וַיָּסַ ר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶ ת- טַבַּעְ תּוֹ , אֲשֶׁ ר הֶעֱבִ יר מֵהָמָ ן , of the wine feast, and Haman was falling on the couch upon which Esther was, and the king said, "Will you וַיִּתְּנָהּ , לְמָרְדֳּכָ י ; וַתָּשֶׂ ם אֶסְתֵּ ר אֶ ת- מָרְדֳּכַ י , even force the queen with me in the house?" For Mordechai was great in אֲדַלְיָא, וְאֵ ת the king's house, and his fame went forth throughout אֲרִ י דָתָ א. וְאֵ ת all the provinces, for the man Mordechai waxed פַּרְמַשְׁתָּ א וְאֵ ת greater and greater. And the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword and with slaying

And the Jews took upon וּמִשְׁלֹחַ מָ נוֹתאִ ישׁלְרֵעֵ הוּ , וּמַתָּ נוֹתלָאֶבְיֹנִ ים. themselves what they had commenced to do and what Mordechai had written to them. For Haman the son of כג וְקִבֵּ ל , הַיְּהוּדִ ים , אֵ ת אֲשֶׁ ר- הֵחֵ לּוּ , לַעֲשׂוֹ ת ; Hammedatha the Agagite, the adversary of all the וְאֵ ת אֲשֶׁ ר- כָּתַ ב מָרְדֳּכַ י , אֲלֵ יהֶ ם. כד כִּ י הָמָ ן Jews, had devised to destroy the Jews, and he cast -בֶּ ן הַמְּדָתָ א הָאֲגָגִ י , צֹרֵ ר כָּ ל- הַיְּהוּדִ ים -- חָשַׁ ב .the pur-that is the lot-to terrify them and destroy them עַ ל- הַיְּהוּ דִ ים , לְאַבְּדָ ם ; וְהִפִּ לפּוּרהוּאהַ גּוֹרָ ל , And when she came before the king, he commanded לְהֻמָּ ם וּלְאַבְּדָ ם. כה וּבְבֹאָ הּ , לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ , through letters that his evil device that he had devised against the Jews return upon his own head, and to אָמַ רעִ ם- הַסֵּפֶ ר , יָשׁוּבמַחֲשַׁבְ תּוֹ הָרָעָ האֲשֶׁ ר- ,destroy him and his sons on the gallows. הַיְּהוּדִ ים , וְזִכְרָ ם , לֹ א- יָסוּףמִזַּרְעָ ם. ,Mordechai the Jew wrote down all [the acts of] power כט וַתִּכְתֹּ ב אֶסְתֵּ ר הַמַּלְכָּ ה בַ ת- to confirm the second Purim letter. And he sent letters אֲבִ יחַיִל , וּמָרְדֳּכַ י הַיְּהוּדִ י -- אֶ ת- כָּ ל- תֹּקֶ ף: to all the Jews, to one hundred twenty-seven לְקַיֵּם , אֵ ת אִגֶּרֶ ת הַפֻּרִ ים הַזֹּ את -- הַשֵּׁנִ ית. ל provinces, the realm of Ahasuerus, words of peace and truth, to confirm these days of Purim in their וַיִּשְׁלַ ח סְפָ רִ ים אֶ ל- כָּ ל- הַיְּהוּדִ ים , אֶ ל- שֶׁבַ ע appointed times, as Mordechai the Jew and Esther the
וְעֶשְׂרִ ים וּמֵאָ ה מְדִ ינָה -- מַלְ כוּת , אֲחַשְׁ וֵרוֹ שׁ: queen had enjoined them, and as they had ordained דִּבְרֵ ישָׁ לוֹ ם , וֶאֱמֶ ת. לא לְקַיֵּםאֶ ת- יְמֵ יהַפֻּרִ ים for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the הָאֵלֶּ ה בִּזְמַנֵּיהֶ ם , כַּאֲשֶׁ ר קִיַּם עֲלֵ יהֶ ם מָרְדֳּכַ י fasts and their cry. Now Esther's order confirmed these הַיְּהוּדִ י וְאֶסְתֵּ ר הַמַּלְכָּ ה וְ, כַאֲשֶׁ ר קִיְּמוּ עַ ל- .matters of Purim, and it was inscribed in the book נַפְשָׁ ם , וְעַ ל- זַרְעָ ם: דִּבְרֵ י הַ צּוֹ מוֹ ת , וְזַעֲקָתָ ם. לב וּמַאֲמַ ראֶסְתֵּ ר -- קִיַּם , דִּבְרֵ יהַפֻּרִ יםהָאֵלֶּ ה ; Chapter 10 וְנִכְתָּ ב , בַּסֵּפֶ ר. And King Ahasuerus imposed a tribute on the land

And all the acts of his א וַיָּשֶׂ ם הַמֶּלֶךְ אחשרש ( אֲחַשְׁ וֵרֹ שׁ ) מַ ס power and his might and the full account of עַ ל- הָאָרֶ ץ , וְאִיֵּי הַיָּם. ב וְ כָ ל- מַעֲשֵׂ ה תָקְ פּוֹ , Mordechai's greatness, how the king advanced him וּגְ בוּרָ תוֹ , וּפָרָשַׁ ת גְּדֻלַּ ת מָרְדֳּכַ י , אֲשֶׁ ר גִּדְּ לוֹ are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings הַמֶּלֶךְ -- הֲ לוֹא- הֵ ם כְּ תוּבִ ים , עַ ל- סֵפֶ ר דִּבְרֵ י of Media and Persia. For Mordechai the Jew was viceroy to King Ahasuerus, and great among the הַיָּמִ ים , לְמַלְכֵ י , מָדַ יוּפָרָ ס. ג כִּ ימָרְדֳּכַ יהַיְּ הוּדִ י , Jews and accepted by most of his brethren; מִשְׁנֶה לַמֶּלֶךְ אֲחַשְׁ וֵרוֹשׁ , וְגָדוֹ ל לַ יְּ הוּדִ ים , וְרָ צוּי seeking the good of his people and speaking לְרֹ ב אֶחָ יו -- דֹּרֵ שׁ טוֹ ב לְעַ מּוֹ , וְדֹבֵ ר שָׁ לוֹם לְכָ ל- .peace to all their seed זַרְ עוֹ . After the reading, the reader recites the following only if a minyan is ( אם נוכחים בקריאה מנין , אומרים את :present, and those listening answer Amen as indicated
הברכה הבאה : בָּ רוּךְ אַתָּ ה יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵ ינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָ עוֹלָ ם . Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who wages our הָרָ ב אֶ ת רִ יבֵ נוּ . וְהַדָּ ן אֶ ת דִּ ינֵנוּ . וְהַ נּוֹקֵ ם אֶ ת נִ קְמָתֵ נוּ . battles, defends our rights, avenges the wrong done to us, punishes our וְהַנִּפְרָ עלָ נוּמִצָּרֵ ינוּ . וְהַמְשַׁלֵּ םגְּ מוּללְכָ לאוֹיְבֵ ינַפְשֵׁ נוּ . .oppressors in behalf, and brings retribution upon all our mortal enemies Blessed are You Lord, who exacts payment in behalf of His people Israel בָּ רוּךְ אַתָּ ה יְהֹוָה . הַנִּפְרָ ע לְעַ מּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵ ל מִכָּ ל צָרֵ יהֶ ם . from all their oppressors; God who delivers. You have always been their salvation תְּכֵלֶ ת מָרְ דְּכָ י . תְּ שׁוּעָתָ ם הָיִ יתָ לָנֶצַ ח , וְתִקְוָתָ ם בּכָ ל their hope in every generation, to make known that all who place their hope in You shall not be put to shame, nor shall all those who trust in You be דּוֹ ר וָדוֹ ר , לְ הוֹדִ יעַ שֶׁכָּ ל קֹוֶיךָ לֹ א יֵבֹ שׁוּ וְלֹ א יִכָּלְ מוּ disgraced forever. Cursed be Haman who sought to destroy me; blessed לָנֶצַ חכָּ להַ חוֹתִ יםבָּךְ . אָ רוּרהָמָ ןאַשֶׁ רבִּקֵ שׁלְאַבְּדִ י , be Mordechai the Jew. Cursed be Zeresh the wife of [Haman] who terrified בָּ רוּךְ מָרְדְכַ י הַיְ הוּדִ י , אֲ רוּרָ ה זֶרֶ שׁ אֵשֶׁ ת מַפְחִ ידִ י, me; blessed be Esther, who [interceded] on my behalf.
