Dear Campers and Staff of Camp Agudah: As I sit here and write this letter its hard to believe that another fun filled summer has come to a close. This summer was one of change in camp starting from the beautiful new main building which our wonderful director Meir Frishman worked so hard throughout the year to make sure it would be ready for us – thank you so much. A lot of people worked very hard in order to make this yearbook happen and I would like to apologize now for anyone I may have forgotten. Firstly, I would like to express my hacoras hatov to Hashem for his ever lasting kindness. I would like to thank our head counselor Rabbi Kaufman for making Camp Agudah the ruach filled place that it is. Rabbi Karfiol, thank you for the censorship of the yearbook it would have been a different yearbook with out you. Rabbi Wolf, Rabbi Feivelson, Rabbi Lichtman, Rabbi Bald, Rabbi Zucker, Rabbi Neiman, thank you for making Camp Agudah what it is and always being there for me. Chazal say: “let the pure ones come and talk about purity”. This means that because Sefer Vayikra talks about korbanos, which leads a person to purity, then the pure ones (i.e. children) should first talk about these concepts. Baruch Hashem after producing, composing, and arranging many albums, I have decided to share my music in a venue that holds a very special place in my heart: choirs. Let “the pure ones” sing Hashem’s praises. Over the past 30 years, I have been attending and working for Camp Agudah in different capacities, includ- ing producing the choirs for the Cantata, a play that is performed a day before Tisha B’av. -

Kikuchi, Program Representative A265 Murphy Hall Mail Code: 157101 From: Elisabeth Le Guin Department of Musicology RE: Proposal for GE credit for Music History M73 and 69 On behalf of the department of Musicology, I am submitting the attached proposals to allow our new courses, Music History M73: Music & Religion in Popular Culture and Music History 69: Music & Politics, to satisfy the university’s GE requirement in Visual and Performance Arts Analysis and Practice, Historical Analysis, and Social Analysis effective Fall 2017. These innovative new courses were designed with the principles of general education in mind and were created in an attempt to meet the increased demand for diverse popular music courses. The Department of Musicology has been proposing new GE that address the aspects of listening and music that intersect with other disciplines such as social sciences, history, ethics, and politics. We would also like to use the experience and expertise of Professors Shana Redmond and Mark Kligman, whose research is addressing these topics. Please note that although courses in Music History have tended to be classified under “Visual and Performance Art Analysis and Practice,” we are applying for Historical and Social Analysis GE credit, as well, in view of both the interdisciplinary nature of the topic and the broad spectrum of approaches explored in the course. What did that sound like? 2. Where would you imagine that sound would be played? 3. How did that sound make you feel? After students share their answers, identify this sound as a shofar, a Jewish ritual horn that is sounded in the month leading up to the holiday of Rosh Hashanah and then on the holiday itself. This is an object that is meant to “awaken” the Jewish people and drive 1 them to do teshuva, repentance for their sins. It is a vehicle for bringing the Jewish people closer to God, and to each other. It is meant to elicit an emotional response and to let Jews feel that God is present in their lives and that He will respond to their actions with forgiveness. -

Students are expected to display knowledge of the history of Jewish music, understand the traditional relationship between music and religion, and identify different types of music, such as klezmer,chazzanus , Chassidic niggunim, Ladino folksong, Yiddush folksong, Israeli folk music, yeshivish music, and many more. The exam is based on the material found in the text, Jewish Music: An Orthodox Perspective, from Biblical Times to the Modern Era, which is accompanied by a CD of selected Jewish music. The exam includes three sections: I. Multiple Choice 30 multiple choice questions [33.3% of the grade] II. Short Answers 10 short-answer questions (from a choice of 13) [33.3% of the grade] III. Listening Questions 10 multiple choice questions [33.3% of the final grade] NOTE: Students are expected to provide answers that are based on the readings from the assigned text, even in cases where there may be an additional correct answer.
