Henri DUREAULT, Préfet (1858-1942) Xavier GILLE 1 ENFANCE La famille Duréault est originaire de Moroges dans le Châlonnais. C’est une famille de vignerons et de propriétaires terriens. Jules, Antoine, Henri Duréault naît à la Condemine, commune de Burzy (Saône-et-Loire), le 3 juillet 1858. Il est le fils aîné de Lazare Duréault et de Léonie Duréault, cousins germains. La déclaration en mairie est signée par son père et ses oncles maternels Hippolyte et Léon Duréault. La commune de Burzy, qui compte moins de cent habitants se trouve dans le canton de Saint-Gengoux-le- National, arrondissement de Mâcon. La Condemine se trouve à un kilomètre à l’Ouest du village. Après lui naissent, toujours à La Condemine, trois filles : Jeanne, en 1860, Madeleine, en 1863 et enfin Marguerite, en 1873. Lazare Duréault vivait du revenu de ses terres et de ses biens. Le frère de Léonie, Léon, avait fait construire à Joncy la grande maison des Croisettes. Sur la fin de ses jours, il fait des placements aventureux et de retrouve ruiné. Ses frères et sœurs doivent régler ses dettes. En compensation, Léonie et Lazare héritent de la propriété des Croisettes à la mort de Léon, en 1895. Ils y vivront jusqu’à leur mort. Elle reviendra ensuite à Henri. 2 De son enfance nous n’avons qu’une seule photo de lui alors qu’il a environ quatre ans. Il est encore habillé en fille selon la coutume de l’époque. En 1878, son nom est tiré au sort pour le Service Militaire mais, comme cela était autorisé, son père paye un volontaire pour prendre sa place. -
The Melodramatic Thread Interdisciplinary Studies in History Editor Harvey J
European History Lehning “Lehning’s application of the themes of melodrama to French political culture offers new insights into French history. His style is lively, The clear, and highly readable.” —Venita Datta, Wellesley College In France, both political culture and theatrical performances have drawn upon the melodrama. Melodramatic This “melodramatic thread” helped weave the country’s political life as it moved from monarchy to democracy. By examining the relationship between public ceremonies and theatrical perfor- mance, James R. Lehning sheds new light on the process of democratization in modern France. Thread Lehning explores the extent to which the dramatic forms of nineteenth- and twentieth-century theater and film were present in the public performance of political power and constituted a particular version of politics. By describing a world in which the virtue of the heroine was threat- ened only by the actions of an evil traitor, melodrama figured the virtue of the French nation as threatened by revolutionary or counterrevolutionary extremists. These same themes of threat- The Melodr The ened virtue, good versus evil, and an attempt to restore the assumed wholeness of a lost past are shared by French political ceremonies. Lehning uses this insight to show how the popularity of melodrama contributed to solving one of the fundamental problems of mass democracy, that of attaching citizens to the institutions, processes, and decisions of the Republic. But it also helped to shape political culture by forcing the very complicated events and questions of French public life into the plots, characters, and moral simplifications of the form. By concentrating on the Republic and the Revolution and on theatrical performance, Lehning affirms the importance of examining the performative aspects of French political culture for understanding the political differences that have marked France in the years since 1789. -

Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

The imagined portraits of the Merovingian kings at Versailles (1837-1842) Margot Renard, University of Grenoble ‘One would expect people to remember the past and imagine the future. But in fact, when discoursing or writing about history, they imagine it in terms of their own experience, and when trying to gauge the future they cite supposed analogies from the past; till, by a double process of repeti- tion, they imagine the past and remember the future’. (Namier 1942, 70) The historian Christian Amalvi observes that during the first half of the nine- teenth century, most of the time history books presented a ‘succession of dyn- asties (Merovingians, Carolingians, Capetians), an endless row of reigns put end to end (those of the ‘rois fainéants’1 and of the last Carolingians especially), without any hierarchy, as a succession of fanciful portraits of monarchs, almost interchangeable’ (Amalvi 2006, 57). The Merovingian kings’ portraits, exhib- ited in the Museum of French History at the palace of Versailles, could be de- scribed similarly: they represent a succession of kings ‘put end to end’, with imagined ‘fanciful’ appearances, according to Amalvi. However, this vision dis- regards their significance for early nineteenth-century French society. Replac- ing these portraits in the broader context of contemporary history painting, they appear characteristic of a shift in historical apprehension. The French history painting had slowly drifted away from the great tradition established by Jacques-Louis David’s moralistic and heroic vision of ancient history. The 1820s saw a new formation of the historical genre led by Paul De- laroche's sentimental vision and attention to a realistic vision of history, restored to picturesqueness. -

PROLOGUE Josephine Beheaded Marble like Greece, like Faulkner’s South in stone Deciduous beauty prospered and is gone . —Derek Walcott, “Ruins of a Great House,” Collected Poems There is a spectacle in Martinique’s gracious Savane park that is hard to miss. The statue honoring one of the island’s most famous citizens, Josephine Tascher, the white creole woman who was to become Napoleon’s lover, wife, and empress, is defaced in the most curious and creative of ways. Her head is missing; she has been decapitated. But this is no ordinary defacement: the marble head has been cleanly sawed off—an effort that could not have been executed without the help of machinery and more than one pair of willing hands—and red paint has been dripped from her neck and her gown. The defacement is a beheading, a reenactment of the most visible of revolutionary France’s punitive and socially purifying acts—death by guillotine. The biographical record shows Josephine born of a slaveholding family of declining fortunes, married into the ranks of France’s minor aristocracy, and surviving the social chaos of the French Revolution, which sentenced countless members of the ancien régime to the guillotine. In the form of this statue, she received her comeuppance in twentieth-century Martinique, where she met the fate that she narrowly missed a century earlier. Scratched on the pedestal are the words—painted in red and penned in creole— “Respe ba Matinik. Respe ba 22 Me” [Respect Martinique. Respect May 22]. The date inscribed here of the anniversary of the 1848 slave rebellion that led to the abolition of slavery on Martinique is itself an act of postcolonial reinscription, one that challenges the of‹cial French-authored abolition proclamation of March 31, 1848, and 2 CULTURAL CONUNDRUMS Statue of Josephine in Fort-de-France, Martinique, today. -

N connaît le tragique épisode de l’affaire Dreyfus. I cannot match the range of learning and scholarship that has gone into the fascinating work edited by Italo Pardo and Giuliana B. Prato (2019); and, therefore, I have concentrated on Giuliana Prato’s illuminating chapter ‘On the Legitimacy of Democratic Representation: Two case studies from Europe’ (2019), which takes a ‘turning point’ in European history: the post-1989 collapse of the Soviet Union and its client state empire in Eastern Europe. The collapse represented a crisis of legitimacy not only of the Soviet Empire as a political entity but also a crisis for the revolutionary ideology of Marxism and the various Communist Parties of Western Europe and, especially, in Italy. We are probably familiar with Francis Fukuyama’s, The End of History and the Last Man (1992) which suggested that the fall of the Berlin Wall marked a final stage in the evolution of liberal democracy and the ‘end point of mankind’s [sic] ideological evolution’ (see also Fukuyama (1989). Such optimism now seems hollow as even Western European states struggle to eliminate corruption and electorates have in some states turned to populist-nationalist political programmes. In this sense, however, Giuliana Prato’s fieldwork illustrates that the processes of change are more complex and drawn-out than the political headlines of the journalist and even sometimes of historians and political scientists. -

The major event that completed this process was the Franco- Prussian War of 1870-1871. This war led to a change in the status quo. It both weakened France’s power and strengthened the legitimacy of a unified Germany under Prussia. In the 19th Century, Great Britain was the dominant country in European power politics. -
Timeline - May 1940
TIMELINE - MAY 1940 As the month begins the battle for Norway continues. Just to recap, German naval and ground forces had begun invading both Norway and Denmark on 9th April. Denmark had quickly capitulated but Norway had resisted. British forces were sent to Andalsnes on 18th April to 1st May, Namsos on 16th April to 3rd May, and Narvik from 15th April to 8th June. They were joined by Norwegian, French and Polish forces. But as May begins the evacuation of Allied troops from some of these areas is already underway and nearing completion. With the failure of the campaign for central Norway attention shifts to Narvik in the far north, strategically vital to the Germans for the shipping of iron ore from Sweden. 1 On 2nd May German troops reached Andalsnes, and on the following day Norwegian troops south of Trondheim surrendered to the Germans. The allied evacuation at Namsos was completed, but German aircraft located part of the evacuation fleet and sank the destroyers Afridi and Bison. The Bison was a French destroyer and she was the first to be sunk with the loss of 136 of her crew. The surviving crew were then picked up by the Afridi. But when that ship came under attack a further 35 of her crew were lost, along with 53 of the Afridi’s crew and 13 soldiers - the only casualties among the whole force of 12,000 troops evacuated from Åndalsnes and Namsos On 5th May the Battle of Hegra Fortress ended when the fortress capitulated. The Germans had now achieved complete victory on Norway’s southern front.
