WT/TPR/S/141 Trade Policy Review Page 90 IV. TRADE POLICIES BY SECTOR (1) INTRODUCTION 1. Switzerland and Liechtenstein have followed a piecemeal approach to their trade reforms. The nature and pace of implementation have tended to vary according to sector. Important reforms have liberalized market access considerably in several manufacturing and services subsectors. The bilateral mutual recognition agreement with the EU, and amendments to competition legislation and to sectoral regulations (e.g. on pharmaceutical products and motor vehicles) have further liberalized the Swiss manufacturing sector since 2000, at least as far as Swiss-EU trade is concerned. In Liechtenstein, the liberalization reforms in manufacturing and services have largely been spurred by its 1995 EEA membership. 2. Several Swiss and Liechtenstein multinational companies are among the world's largest, and many competitive and innovative small and medium-sized export-based companies have developed with little or no government assistance. The main exceptions are the electricity and gas subsectors, and certain industries with low productivity, notably in food manufacturing, certain construction products and services, or salt production. Despite relatively high tariff protection, the textiles and clothing and (particularly) the footwear industry, have recorded the strongest contraction in value added in Swiss manufacturers over the past decade. 3. In agriculture, implementation of reforms has slowed since 2000. Switzerland (and through it Liechtenstein) continues to rank top among the OECD countries in terms of government support to agriculture, despite the ongoing gradual move away from price support towards direct payments. High border protection has contributed to maintaining domestic food prices high by international comparison. -

2007-10-16 17:07 CEST EgyptAir to join Star Alliance At a joint ceremony held in Cairo today, the Chief Executive Board of Star Alliance has voted to accept EgyptAir as a future member, - Egypt is one of the most important aviation markets in Africa, with a large potential for both business and leisure travel. We are proud that EgyptAir, a world class airline, has chosen to join Star Alliance, thereby recognizing the importance of alliances in aviation today, commented Jaan Albrecht, CEO Star Alliance. - EgyptAir provides an ideal network fit for Star Alliance and will permit many more passengers to experience the alliance's customer benefits especially in markets, in which Star Alliance was up to now under represented, Albrecht continued. In order to implement the Star Alliance "Move under one Roof" concept at Cairo Airport, EgyptAir and the Star Alliance member carriers flying to Cairo will move to the new Terminal 3 once it opens in 2008 Within the integration process now underway, EgyptAir is set to become a full Star Alliance member carrier within the next 18 months. EgyptAir will add nine additional unique airports into Star Alliance network, bringing the overall total to more than 17,700 daily flights serving 944 destinations in 161 countries. (Figures are based on current 17 member carriers and the four carriers set to join soon - Air China, Egypt Air, Shanghai Airlines and Turkish Airlines. EgyptAir was established in May 1932 as the first airline in the Middle East and Africa and the seventh to join IATA. GETTING TO MONTREUX VIA ZURICH AIRPORT BY TRAIN Members flying to Zurich who will not attend the Summit, but wish to go directly to Montreux, can travel there by train. A train to Montreux leaves from Zurich Airport once every hour. The train ride is very scenic and lasts about three hours. There is a train station in the airport. Getting to the station is easy by following these directions: When you clear passport control/customs, get your bags and walk through the customs lanes. (Where you get your bags, there are free baggage trolleys available.) You will enter the "public" area of the arrivals terminal. You'll see overhead signs for the "Bahn" and pictograms of trains. Follow the signs and pictograms to exit the terminal. ( If you need francs, stop at one of the ATMs before you leave the arrivals terminal.) After exiting the arrivals terminal, walk straight ahead and cross over the passenger pick-up lanes. You will enter another building with a shopping center on ground level, and the train station downstairs/lower level. When you enter this second building, you will be in the shopping center. The train station is on the lower level. You will see pictograph signs to the station downstairs - you can take the escalators or the elevators. Just go down the escalator or elevator to the lower level, and you will see large boards showing trains, and the ticket windows. You can't miss it. If you purchase a pass for multiple day travel instead of a one-way ticket to Montreux, you will need to have your pass validated at the ticket window. -
