The Tulku System in Tibetan Buddhism: Its Reliability, Orthodoxy and Social Impacts By Ramin Etesami A thesis submitted to the graduate school in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts at the International Buddhist College, Thailand March, 20 Abstract The Tulku institution is a unique characteristic of Tibetan Buddhism with a central role in this tradition, to the extent that it is present in almost every aspect of Tibet’s culture and tradition. However, despite this central role and the scope and diversity of the socio-religious aspects of the institution, only a few studies have so far been conducted to shed light on it. On the other hand, an aura of sacredness; distorted pictures projected by the media and film industries;political propaganda and misinformation; and tendencies to follow a pattern of cult behavior; have made the Tulku institution a highly controversial topic for research; and consequently, an objective study of the institution based on a critical approach is difficult. The current research is an attempt to comprehensively examine different dimensions of the Tulku tradition with an emphasis on the issue of its orthodoxy with respect to the core doctrines of Buddhism and the social implications of the practice. In this research, extreme caution has been practiced to firstly, avoid any kind of bias rooted in faith and belief; and secondly, to follow a scientific methodology in reviewing evidence and scriptures related to the research topic. Through a comprehensive study of historical accounts, core Buddhist texts and hagiographic literature, this study has found that while the basic Buddhist doctrines allow the possibility for a Buddhist teacher or an advanced practitioner to “return back to accomplish his tasks, the lack of any historical precedence which can be viewed as a typical example of the practice in early Buddhism makes the issue of its orthodoxy equivocal and relative. -

I bow to the feet of the omniscient Sage. The bhikṣu vajra holder2 Tsöntrü asked: What are the boundaries for guarding the vows and pledges? This [theme] is vast, has many [topics], and it cannot be exhaustively expressed in words It is the basis of debates among all the scholars in Central Tibet and Tsang. The matchless king of tantras, Hevajra, teaches that first, one requests the vows of prātimokṣa,3 of the bodhisattvas, and of mantra one by one, and then one has to perform the conduct of mantra. In the mantra system of the ancient ones one obtains empowerment in the nine vehicles and thereby also all the three vows one by one. These are practices that are trained. Already in India, there existed a threefold teaching system for them. The Sakyapas maintain the transformation of the three vows, the Kagyüpas maintain that the occasions for losing them are different, and Tsongkhapa maintains that one vow is respectively supported by another. There are vajra holders among householders and bhikṣus. They have correct and incorrect tenets. The Indian mahāpaṇḍita Śraddhākara was the father of Tipu Sang Ngag Dongpo.4 He had obtained the ordinary accomplishments, but not the supreme ones. Magic, Healing and Ethics in Tibetan Buddhism Sam van Schaik (The British Library) Aris Lecture in Tibetan and Himalayan Studies Wolfson College, Oxford, 16 November 2018 I first met Michael Aris in 1997, while I was in the midst of my doctoral work on Jigme LingPa and had recently moved to Oxford. Michael resPonded graciously to my awkward requests for advice and helP, meeting with me in his college rooms, and rePlying to numerous emails, which I still have printed out and on file (this was the 90s, when we used to print out emails). Michael also made a concerted effort to have the Bodleian order an obscure Dzogchen text at my request, giving me a glimPse into his work as an advocate of Tibetan Studies at Oxford. And though I knew Anthony Aris less well, I met him several times here in Oxford and elsewhere, and he was always a warm and generous Presence. When I came to Oxford I was already familiar with Michael’s work, esPecially his book on Jigme LingPa’s account of India in the eighteenth century, and his study of the treasure revealer Pema LingPa. Michael’s aPProach, symPathetic yet critical, ProPerly cautious but not afraid to exPlore new connections and interPretations, was also an insPiration to me. I hoPe to reflect a little bit of that sPirit in this evening’s talk. What is magic? So, this evening I’m going to talk about magic. But what is ‘magic’ anyway? Most of us have an idea of what the word means, but it is notoriously difficult to define. -

The Karmapa controversy A compilation of information 1 Foreword This work fills a requirement: to provide all meaningful information for a good understanding about the Karmapa controversy which, since 1992, shakes up the Karma Kagyu lineage. While web surfing, one can notice the huge information unbalance between the two differing sides: on Situ Rinpoche's side, there is plenty of documentation, while that on Shamar Rinpoche's side is sparse. On Situ Rinpoche's side, many websites give out information, with some, dedicated to this task, having almost daily updates. By comparison, Shamar Rinpoche side does not even provide the minimum information sufficient to understand its point of view. Now, complete information easily found is essential for everyone to make up one's opinion. To limit oneself to only one version of the facts does not allow for a full understanding and leads to all extremes, which we have sorely witnessed since 1992. Studying this controversy, one is surprised by the distressing level of disinformation and ignorance surrounding it. Few people know truly the circumstances and the unfolding of all these events which profoundly shook our lineage. Most contented themselves with adopting the view point of their entourage, siding either way, bringing up real quarrels and polemics between disciples of the same masters. It even came up to murders and monasteries attacks ! And yet, without going for any debate or confrontation, simply acquainting oneself with information provided by each side, allows us to stand back, to grasp the ins and outs in a more objective way and finally to reach a valid opinion in this matter. -

Huntington edby Dr. Susan Huntington dvisor Graduate Program in History of Art ABSTRACT This thesis presents a detailed study of a large Tibetan painting in the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) that was collected in 1921 by an Irish fur trader named George Crofts. The painting represents a mandala, a Buddhist meditational diagram, centered on a fierce protector, or dharmapala, known as Mahakala or “Great Black Time” in Sanskrit. The more specific Tibetan form depicted, called Legs Idan Nagpo Aghora, or the “Excellent Black One who is Not Terrible,” is ironically named since the deity is himself very wrathful, as indicated by his bared fangs, bulging red eyes, and flaming hair. His surrounding mandala includes over 100 subsidiary figures, many of whom are indeed as terrifying in appearance as the central figure. There are three primary parts to this study. First, I discuss how the painting came to be in the museum, including the roles played by George Croft s, the collector and Charles Trick Currelly, the museum’s director, and the historical, political, and economic factors that brought about the ROM Himalayan collection. Through this historical focus, it can be seen that the painting is in fact part of a fascinating museological story, revealing details of the formation of the museum’s Asian collections during the tumultuous early Republican era in China. -
