    15 Provinciehuis The Provinciehuis building’s (County Hall) caretaker Van der Lee later recorded his memories of the first days of the Battle of Arnhem. The building at Markt 6, between Hofstraat and Marktstraat, was badly da- maged towards the end of those September days in 1944. German soldiers had settled into various buil- dings around the Markt. The Paleis van Justitie (Palace of Justice) at Markt 3 and the Joods Ouden- liedenhuis Beth-Miklot Lekiznoh (Jewish Elderly Folks Home) at Markt 5 were set on fire by the Germans on 19 September. Both buildings burned to the ground and formed a burning barrier to the British parachutists at the bridge, who tried to breakout on the evening of 20 September. That evening it was obvious that the situation for the British was untenable. Many wounded were evacuated during a two-hour ceasefire. Later that night it was deci- ded to withdraw from the Rijkswaterstaat building to the large buildings at the corner of the Markt and Marktstraat: the Rijksarchief (State Archive), caretaker Van der Lee’s house and the Provincie- huis. These buildings were still virtually undamaged, ideal for awaiting the arrival of the British XXX Corps from Nijmegen. The buildings were fired on by the Germans. Early in the morning of Thursday 20 September the last British were taken prisoner in the Provinciehuis.     WWII MISSING RESEARCH, WAR GRAVES, & REMEMBRANCE March 2018 The Liberated Countries and the War Dead Dr Jennie Gray 1 2 The Liberated Countries and the War Dead The British programme for the war dead could never have been effectively carried out without the willing cooperation of the liberated countries; they provided the most invaluable help, this being a continuation of the devoted care tendered to so many British graves during the war. There are countless instances of how carefully the British dead were looked after in the dark years of the occupation. One notable example was the French care for the dead of the 1942 Dieppe raid. After the liberation, Colonel Arthur Owen Stott, ADGRE for 21 Army Group, devoted a long and detailed memorandum to what had happened. Men who had died of wounds in the hospital at Dieppe had been buried at Hautot-Sur-Mer cemetery. However, the dead in the cemetery also included a number who had originally been buried at other places, such as Varengeville-Sur-Mer. The French were very keen to preserve the identities of the men who were being reinterred, but experienced great difficulty in doing so because the Germans had stripped the bodies ‘and such identity tags as were available had been muddled up’. Stott commented that this summary of the facts might appear to contain ‘but little concrete evidence, but it will be appreciated that the French themselves had little real knowledge of what was done by the Germans’. At the end of his report, Stott made his feelings known in a very rare piece of personal comment: I wish to place on record the fact that the French authorities have been most helpful in this matter.

Jansen was unable to continue playing the eighteenth- century Wagner organ. [1] This organ, dating from 1769-1770 and built by the famous organ builders Johann Michael Wagner (1723-1801) and Johannes Wagner (1734-1804), would not survive the Battle of Arnhem. At 10.45 am the air-raid siren sounded for the third time that morning. The first two had been false alarms, but this time bombs fell on various places, including the Willemskazerne (barracks). An unknown number of churchgoers died in the bombing while on their way home from church. However, St. Eusebiuskerk remained undamaged for the time being. Later in the morning the three members of the Air Defence Service who were present, were reinforced by the arrival of seven more.     35 Gele Rijdersplein The Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 had an enormous influence on the infrastructure of Arnhem. A number of imposing buildings in Willemsplein were badly damaged in the battle and in many cases never rebuilt. Gele Rijdersplein was constructed in the nineteen- fifties on the site where the Willemskazerne (barracks) had stood until the end of the war. The barracks were bombed by the allies at the very start of the Battle of Arnhem. Due to the construction of the Gele Rijdersplein the size of Willemsplein was drastically redu- ced. This story describes the air raids on 17 September 1944 which preceded the airborne landings and the ensuing ground actions. Also described is the stately artwork in the Gele Rijdersplein which was made by the Arnhem sculptor Gijs Jacobs van den Hof, and unveiled in 1963. (KLM Aerocarto collection) An allied air raid on Sunday morning 17 September 1944 signalled the beginning of a changed towns- cape for the capital of Gelderland. However, this was not the first time that Arnhem had been bombed during the Second World War. On 22 February 1944 the American 446th Bomb Group bombed the gasworks and Van Ommeren’s paint and glass Company in error, causing extensive damage. Seven- teen houses were also destroyed, 21 others were badly damaged and 57 people lost their lives. The British bombers which arrived over the city on that first morning of Market Garden were not there by accident.

A solitary Marine greeted them with a salute on Constitution Avenue. The Marine stood at attention saluting for 3 straight hours , while the parade of roaring bikes kept on coming. The event is held in remembrance of those who've fallen in the military; the group is called "Rolling Thunder.” As the camera is on the Marine he struggles with his emotions, and continues holding that 3-hour long salute -- his head lowered, his eyes down, in reverence for the fallen. It got to be overwhelming for him, and his tears started flowing. Semper Fi brother.
