Ryan, S.J. Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society Let me begin on holy ground, Ireland. In 1931 William Butler Yeats concluded his short poem, “Remorse for Intemperate Speech,” with a stanza that speaks to me as the person I am, for better or for worse: Out of Ireland have we come. Great hatred, little room, Maimed us at the start. I carry from my mother’s womb A fanatic heart. Ireland is, indeed, a small place, and it has seen great fanaticism and hatred, although the temperature of Ireland as a whole has subsided dramatically since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, despite Boris Johnson. The whole island of Ireland today occupies 32,599 square miles. British-administered Northern Ireland includes 5,340 of those square miles. Combined Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approximate the size of Indiana. The total population of the island of Ireland is 6.7 million people, about a half a million more than the population of Indiana. There is another place of “great hatred, little room” that I wish to discuss this evening: the Holy Land, made up today of the State of Israel and the Palestinian autonomous regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. -

Constructing the Cámara Santa: Architecture, History, and Authority in Medieval Oviedo by Flora Thomas Ward A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Flora Thomas Ward 2014 Constructing the Cámara Santa: Architecture, History, and Authority in Medieval Oviedo Flora Thomas Ward Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto 2014 Abstract My dissertation examines the Cámara Santa of the Cathedral of Oviedo as both a medieval and modern monument, shaped by twelfth-century bishops and twentieth-century restorers. I consider the space as a multi-media ensemble, containing manuscripts, metalwork, and sculpture, arguing that we must view it as a composite—if fragmented—whole. My analysis focuses on the twelfth century, a crucial period during which the structure, decoration, and contents of the Cámara Santa were reworked. A key figure in this story is Bishop Pelayo of Oviedo (d. 1153), who sought to enhance the antiquity and authority of the see of Oviedo by means of the cult of its most important reliquary: the Arca Santa. I argue that this reliquary shapes the form and function of the twelfth-century Cámara Santa, considering the use of the space in the context of liturgy and pilgrimage. Finally, I consider the sculpture that lines the walls of the space, arguing that it animates and embodies the relics contained within the Arca Santa, interacting with the pilgrims and canons who used the space. Thus, this sculpture represents the culmination of the long twelfth-century transformation of the Cámara Santa into a space of pilgrimage focused around the Arca Santa and the memory of the early medieval patrons of the Cathedral of Oviedo, a memory which abides to this day. -

Todo lo más, se hallan ocasionales inclusiones de voces o frases asturianas en auto- res como Eugenio de Salazar, que transcribe dos versos (de sendos cantares) y dos frases con alguna voz de interpretación discutida (González Ollé 1977: 53-61; Pensado 1982: 34-35). Pero, sin duda, el corpus más numeroso son los 49 refranes que se encuentran en la colección del Comendador Hernán Núñez (1555), conjunto fraseológico y léxico de gran interés tanto para la paremiología como para la lexicografía asturianas, donde apa- recen formas arcaicas poco o nada presentes hoy en asturiano: ne ‘ni’, lomada ‘fama’ [< nōmĭnāta], fabu (DGLA, s. v.) [< făvum], etc.). También se ha destacado la presencia de palabras asturianas (o leonesas) en obras como La pícara Justina (cuelmo, desgañir ‘des- gañitar’, gargüelo, mazcar, mega ‘bruja’, tosta, etc.), en Las famosas asturianas (Cane- llada 1982: 23-27) de Lope de Vega (soldemente, cada que o zomirse, junto a muchas formas —a veces aberrantes— que incorporan soluciones fonéticas y morfosintácticas asturleonesas) o en tantas otras que utilizan la llamada «fabla» (Salvador Plans 1992; Busto 2000: 60). Voces bables también aparecen en los villancicos puestos en boca de asturianos que formaron parte de los repertorios de las capillas musicales de muchas ca- tedrales y conventos de toda España en los siglos XVII y XVIII, donde se hallan textos que son meros remedos del habla asturiana junto a otros escritos en un asturiano bastante pu- ro.1 Sin embargo, es evidente que en ninguna de las obras citadas la presencia de asturia- nismos obedece a un interés filológico. -

THE SELF-Coronations OF IBERIAN KINGS: A CROOKED LINE JAUME AURELL UNIVERSIDAD DE NAVARRA SpaIN Date of receipt: 10th of March, 2012 Final date of acceptance: 4th of March, 2014 ABSTRACT This article focuses on the practice of self-coronation among medieval Iberian Castilian kings and its religious, political, and ideological implications. The article takes Alfonso XI of Castile self-coronation (1332) as a central event, and establishes a conceptual genealogy, significance, and relevance of this self-coronation, taking Visigothic, Asturian, Leonese, and Castilian chronicles as a main source, and applying political theology as a methodology. The gesture of self-coronation has an evident transgressive connotation which deserves particular attention, and could throw some light upon the traditional debate on the supposed “un-sacred” kingship of Castilian kings1. Alfonso XI of Castile and Peter IV of Aragon’s peculiar and transgressive gestures of self-coronation in the fourteenth century are very familiar to us, narrated in detail as they are in their respective chronicles2. Yet, their ritual transgression makes us wonder why they acted in this way, whether there were any precedents for this particular gesture, and to what extent they were aware of the different rates at which the anointing and coronation ceremonies were introduced into their own kingdoms, in their search for justification of the self-coronation3. -

Imperialism and Multipolarity in the Far West: Beyond the Lusitanians (237–146 BC) Eduardo Sánchez Moreno* Board Game: Towards a Theoretical Framework The Mediterranean expansion of the Roman Republic conformed to a mul- tipolar scenario and a complex interaction displayed within it. In the case of its projection in the Iberian Peninsula, the prevailing view of an unidirec- tional and organic Roman imperialism against a substantially receiver ‘indig- enous world’ is reconsidered in favour of a process defined ultimately by the multilineality and multivocality of actors and agendas, as the progress of the investigation infers.1 In a horizon like the present one, in which hegemonic powers, city-states, peoples and confederations of varied substrate and different articulation com- pete, an approach that takes into account the perspective of International Relations (IR) seems to fit, since it is a discipline whose theory is stimulat- ing the analysis of the Hellenistic-Roman expansionism.2 The adaptation of the so-called ‘realist theory’ to the ancient Mediterranean, under the premise of a framework of relationships defined by militarism, anarchy and interstate rivalry, owes much to A.M. This article evaluates the presence of Muslim communities in the Kingdom of Navarre in the late Middle Ages. Following the Christian Reconquest of the Navarrese bank of the Ebro in 1119, a sizeable Muslim community remained in Christian territory until 1516. This article focuses on the fifteenth century, a period for which religious coexistence in the smallest of the Iberian Christian kingdoms is in need of further contextualisation. An analysis of existing scholarship and new archival evidence throws light on the economic activities of the Muslims in Tudela as well as on their relationship with the Navarrese monarchy, their collective identity, their legal systems and their relationships not only with their Christian and Jewish neighbours, but also with other Iberian Muslim communities including those of Al Andalus, or Moorish Iberia. 1. INTRODUCTION Tudela, which was the main urban settlement of the Merindad de la Ribera throughout the Middle Ages, housed the largest Mudejar, Moorish or Muslim community, of the Kingdom of Navarre for over four cen- turies.1 In early 1119, the Navarrese–Aragonese kingdom of Alfonso I, also known as ‘the Warrior King’, regained the Navarrese bank of the Ebro for Christianity.2 However, the Moors would not leave these lands until 1516 when Navarre, four years after uniting with Castile, finally adopted the 1502 Castilian law which ruled that Moorish communities had to convert to Christianity or else go into exile.
