Larval and juvenile descriptions are needed to monitor D. diaboli larvae and juveniles as part of recovery efforts for this species of conservation concern. The purpose of this study was to describe and quantify characteristics of early life stages of D. diaboli from hatching to 128 d post hatch to facilitate larval and juvenile identification. Descriptive characters include mid-lateral band of melanophores by Day 8 (.5.1 mm SL; .5.4 mm TL), mid-lateral band of melanophores separate from a rounded caudal spot and lateral snout-to-eye melanophores by Day 16 (.5.8 mm SL; .6.3 mm TL), initial coiling of intestine by Day 32 (.6.2 mm SL; .7.2 mm TL), wedge-shaped caudal spot by Day 64 (.8.7 mm SL; .10.0 mm TL), and melanophores around scale margins and mid-lateral double dashes along lateral line by Day 128 (.13.5 mm SL; .16.0 mm TL). -

Umpqua Bibliography by Groups Introduction This bibliography is about the Umpqua River Basin, particularly its hydrology and its fisheries. Some films, photographs and archival materials are included along with books, articles, maps and web pages. The bibliography was built using local, regional and national library catalogs, major online databases, theses and dissertations, watershed assessments and Federal endangered species reports. Its historical coverage begins with Joel Palmer’s 1847 Journal of Travels over the Rocky Mountains and ends in early 2008. I have attempted to cover major physical features of the Umpqua Basin, as well as important aquatic species and critical issues facing the area. Trying to build a comprehensive collection of references on any subject in the age of information is, to use an image Joel Palmer would understand, like trying to catch a greased pig. FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. Washington, DC 20240 Submitted By: Center for Biological Diversity Date: September 25, 2012 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Center for Biological Diversity petitions the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the Clear Lake hitch (Lavinia exilicauda chi) as an endangered or threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act. The Clear Lake hitch is a fish species endemic to Clear Lake, California and its tributaries. A large minnow once so plentiful that it was a staple food for the original inhabitants of the Clear Lake region, the Clear Lake hitch has declined precipitously in abundance as the ecology of its namesake lake has been altered and degraded. Clear Lake hitch once spawned in all of the tributary streams to Clear Lake. The hitch life cycle involves migration each spring, when adults make their way upstream in tributaries of Clear Lake, spawning, and then return to Clear Lake. The biologically significant masses of hitch were a vital part of the Clear Lake ecosystem, an important food source for numerous birds, fish, and other wildlife. Hitch in “unimaginably abundant” numbers once clogged the lake’s tributaries during spectacular spawning runs. Historical accounts speak of “countless thousands” and “enormous” and “massive” numbers of hitch. The Clear Lake basin and its tributaries have been dramatically altered by urban development and agriculture. -

Frequently Asked Questions Proposed Rule to Remove Borax Lake Chub from the Federal List of Threatened and Endangered Species What action is being taken by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service? The Service is proposing to remove Borax Lake chub (Siphateles boraxobius) from the list of threatened and endangered species (delist) under the Endangered Species Act. What type of fish are these? The Borax Lake chub is a small minnow in the Family Cyprinidae, found only in Borax Lake of Harney County, Oregon. It is an opportunistic omnivore, eating both plants and animals. The diets of juveniles and adults are similar and include aquatic and terrestrial insects, algae, mollusks and mollusk eggs, aquatic worms, fish scales, spiders, and seeds. Males, and some females, reach reproductive maturity within one year. Spawning primarily occurs in the spring but can occur year-around. The reproductive behavior and length of incubation is unknown. Where is this fish found? The only place in the world where Borax Lake chub lives is Borax Lake. Borax Lake lies in the Alvord Basin, part of the larger Great Basin, which was dominated by a much larger Alvord Lake approximately 10,000 years ago. As Alvord Lake receded, native fishes became restricted to remaining springs, lakes, and creeks. Individuals from Alvord Lake’s ancestral chub became isolated in the geothermal springs of Borax Lake and over time the isolation and unique environmental conditions resulted in adaptations that differentiated the fish into the species now recognized as Borax Lake chub. Borax Lake is a 10.2 acre geothermally heated alkaline spring-fed lake in southeastern Oregon.
