Kylmän sodan aikana Suomen Yleisradio kuului ainoana eurooppalaisena yleisradiona sekä Länsi- että Itä-Euroopan yleisradioliittoihin. Molemmilla yleisradioliitoilla oli omat kansainväliset musiikkitapahtumansa. Länsi-Euroopan yleisradioliitto EBU oli järjestänyt vuodesta 1956 lähtien Eurovision laulukilpailuja. Itä-Euroopan yleisradioliitto OIRT lanseerasi vuonna 1977 Sopotin musiikkifestivaalien yhteyteen Intervision laulukilpailut.
