  • Behind the “Powderworks”: Hannah Josephson and the Tin Flute
192CanLitSpring2007-6 3/22/07 3:29 PM Page 111 Agnes Whitfield Behind the “Powderworks”: Hannah Josephson and The Tin Flute Some time in the fall of 1946, when she was working on the English translation of Bonheur d’occasion for the New York publisher Reynal and Hitchcock, the version which would also be published in Toronto by McClelland & Stewart, the American translator Hannah Josephson com- mitted an unfortunate mistake. She was almost halfway through the book. The young heroine, Florentine, her thoughts full of Jean Lévesque, has just heard Emmanuel Létourneau’s declaration of love and wiped his kiss off her lips. Eugène, her brother, has enrolled in the army; her father, Azarius, is out of work. Her little brother Daniel’s illness is quickly worsening. Fore- shadowing the increasingly dramatic tensions of the novel, the start of the next chapter is marked by the fierce squalls of the close of winter: La fin de l’hiver s’entourait de nuages et de soudaines rafales. (Roy 1945 197, my emphasis) Guided by European French usage, or simply unaware that “poudrerie” is the Quebec word for snowstorm, Josephson translated the portentous phrase, “la poudrerie se déchaîna” by “the powderworks exploded”: Canadian Literature / Spring 192CanLitSpring2007-6 3/22/07 3:29 PM Page 112 Hannah Josephson The winter was coming to an end in overcast skies and sudden squalls.

She presents a realistically conceived persona, while nevertheless questioning the authority of the unengaged artist to represent an historical event. Her extensive use of Publisher(s) historical data is not applied in a postmodern method, but is rather inspiration for a fiction that refuses to grant itself full authority. Eat at home and buy the books. Jack Rabinovitch1 Founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch, the Giller Prize was established to honour Rabinovitch’s late wife, the journalist Doris Giller, who had died from cancer a year earlier.2 Since its inception, the prize has served to recognize excellence in Canadian English-language fiction, including both novels and short stories. Initially the award was endowed to provide an annual cash prize of $25,000.3 In 2005, the Giller Prize partnered with Scotiabank to create the Scotiabank Giller Prize. Under the new arrangement, the annual purse doubled in size to $50,000, with $40,000 going to the winner and $2,500 going to each of four additional finalists.4 Beginning in 2008, $50,000 was given to the winner and $5,000 * Andrew Irvine holds the position of Professor and Head of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. Urban Archaeology in Michael Redhill’s Toronto Novel Consolation Meeria Vesala University of Tampere Faculty of Communication Sciences Master’s Programme in English Language and Literature MA Thesis May 2018 Tampereen yliopisto Viestintätieteiden tiedekunta Englannin kielen ja kirjallisuuden maisterikoulutus VESALA, MEERIA: Urban Archaeology in Michael Redhill’s Toronto Novel Consolation Pro Gradu -tutkielma, 117 sivua + lähdeluettelo Toukokuu 2018 Tutkielmani käsittelee urbaanin arkeologian tematiikkaa ja arkeologian metaforista sekä käsitteellistä merkitystä kanadalaisessa kaupunkikirjallisuudessa. Tutkimusaineistoni keskiössä on Michael Redhillin Torontoon sijoittuva historiallinen kaupunkiromaani Consolation (2006), jota analysoin ensisijaisesti kirjassa esitetyn tarinan ilmentämän tilallisuuden kautta.
