FRIDAY 3 AUGUST 2018 SPORT 17 Wild Illusion corners Qatar Nassau Stakes glory THE PENINSULA GOODWOOD, WEST ESSEX: Wild Illusion landed her second top-grade victory when winning the feature race on day three of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, the £600,000 G1 Qatar Nassau Stakes. Dropping back to a mile and a quarter seemed to suit the Godolphin-owned three-year-old filly, who was taking on older rivals for the first time, and whose two most recent runs had come over a mile and a half yesterday. Wild Illusion (4/1) made all the running under William Buick before beating Urban Fox (3/1) by two lengths, with Veracious a short-head back in third. Winning trainer Charlie Appleby said: “Wild Illusion has been rock solid all season and was fourth in a Guineas (at Newmarket), second in the Oaks (at Epsom) and second in the Ribblesdale Stakes (at Royal Ascot). She was coming into the race as well as I have seen her all season, and I felt that dropping back in trip was going to be her forte. Full credit to all the team at home, and to Michel (Rakotoarisoa) who rides her every day at home and looks after her. The Aidan O’Brien-trained Rhododendron (15/8 Qatar Olympic Committee President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani (centre) poses for a photograph with the winners of the Qatar Sussex Stakes favourite) ran poorly and finished last of the six (Gr1), won by Qatar Racing’s Lightning Spear, at Qatar Goodwood Festival on Wednesday.

Arsenal FC v FC Porto MATCH PRESS KIT Arsenal Stadium, London Tuesday, 26 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group G - Matchday 2 Arsenal FC's first group stage tie at their new north London home arrives with last season's runners-up having already banked three points from their opening fixture against Hamburger SV. Starting a UEFA Champions League campaign with an away match for the first time in five seasons proved no impediment to Arsène Wenger's side's ambitions of going one stage further this time around and they will be looking to add a second victory against FC Porto. Hamburg triumph • The Group G game at the Arena Hamburg two weeks ago proved a wonderful experience for former BV Borussia Dortmund midfielder Tomáš Rosický as he struck the decisive goal in stunning fashion on his return to Germany for a 2-1 victory. Now Wenger's team will be hoping for more of the same on their new stage - where they defeated NK Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 in qualifying - having waved goodbye to their Highbury home after 93 years, and 22 seasons of European football. Formidable record • After losing at home to Chelsea FC in the 2003/04 quarter-final second leg, Arsenal played ten matches at Highbury in the tournament without losing, winning seven and drawing three. • The Gunners have encountered Portuguese opposition once before in UEFA club competition and they will not recall it with any affection. They met SL Benfica in the second round of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1991/92, losing 3-1 after extra time at home in the second leg after a 1-1 draw in Lisbon.

  • Press Release Building Peace Through Sport
PRESS RELEASE BUILDING PEACE THROUGH SPORT – AFRICAN UNION AND PEACE ONE DAY UNITE ON PEACE DAY With a few days to go until Peace Day, 21 September, the African Union and Peace One Day, an NGO dedicated to the promotion of global peace, have partnered with the goal of uniting the African continent through football. On 21 September, communities across the continent will be pulling out their team shirts and vuvuzelas for the second time this year, as they come together to unite in the spirit of Peace Day. These community‐led football matches will unite Africans, young and old, from North to South, East to West, with the aim of promoting and contributing to conflict resolution and peace‐building on the continent. “Sport plays a critical role in peace building, enabling children, women and men in broken societies to share a common language and a spirit of fair play that transcends divisions and despair that are the consequences of conflict,” said Ramtane Lamamra, AU Commissioner for Peace and Security. The power of football to unite and inspire was visible throughout Africa’s first FIFA World Cup, hosted this year in South Africa. The continent’s unified support for the tournament and love of the game overwhelmed many of the issues that often challenge Africa’s peace and stability. The One Day One Goal initiative, created by Peace One Day with the support of PUMA.Peace, aims to see football matches played in every country of the world on Peace Day. Last year, over 700 matches took place in 200 countries.
