2012-2013 Annual Report Stronger families… Stronger communities Hathaway-Sycamores CHILD AND FAMILY SERVICES Mission: Cultivating hope and resilience to enrich the well-being of children, adults, families and communities. dedication Renée LaBran, William P. Martone heal. hope. thrive. Accredited by The Joint Commission Western Association of Schools and Colleges Dear Friends: It seems that in recent years we have been regularly confronted in this country with tragedies involving our young people – be it a teen suicide, or a senseless act of violence such as a mass shooting. While each is very different in nature, many of these heartbreaking events highlight the ease with which youth mental illness can slip through the cracks in our communities and schools, leading to tragic results. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, only 20% of children with mental disorders are identified and receive mental health services. Furthermore, 50% of students age 14 and older who are living with mental illness drop out of high school. These statistics contribute to a variety of social issues with which we must grapple. As a provider of mental health services to children and families, Hathaway- Sycamores Child and Family Services is uniquely positioned to share our virtually unrivaled expertise in addressing these statistics. For more than 111 years, we have steadfastly focused on our mission of cultivating hope and resilience to enrich the well-being of children, adults, families, and communities. Today we stand as one of Los Angeles County’s largest, nonprofit, private children’s mental health and welfare agencies, providing a comprehensive continuum of therapeutic and other support services to more than 8,500 children and families annually. One of Hathaway –Sycamores’ key programs is our school-based services. Available to youth in the Alhambra, Glendale, Los Angeles, and Pasadena Unified School Districts, this program serves as a vital safety net designed to prevent tragedies by treating students struggling with mental health issues. One such student was Hector. When Hector started high school, thoughts of suicide dominated his day, and angry outbursts characterized his actions. On the verge of failing out of school and giving up on life, Hector was referred to one of Hathaway-Sycamores’ on-campus therapists. After two years of intensive therapy, Hector emerged a new young man filled with hope, happiness, and forgiveness for those who had harmed him. Today, Hector is a vibrant, engaged college student, intent on becoming a therapist himself. To learn more about Hector’s inspiring story, visit www. hathaway-sycamores.org. We’ve set the standard for innovation and best practices designed to help children – many of whom have endured horrific trauma – heal, hope, and thrive. Your support, as well as the skill and dedication of our more than 650 staff members and our board of directors, enables Hathaway-Sycamores to share success stories such as Hector’s. Thank you for helping us to make a difference. William P.
