SAA sponsored many activities for the 1994-1995 academic year. Some of those activities included: free movie night, bowling night, a monopoly tournament, the midnight breakfast, spring formal, and rapelling. Many other activites took place on campus through -out the year that were made possible by SAA.

The staff was eager to begin reporting the happenings on campus and did a wonderful job of including a v of articles in each page turning issue. The first semester Amy McWhirt, Robin Hathaway, and Chris Smith served as the editors. To finish the year, Robin Hathaway and Jerome Bailey served as the second semester editors. Throughout the ye the staff lost a few members, but they also gained some. This year the Collegian assigned ''beats'' for each reporter to make sure that all possible stories reported. The Collegian also had many people who were eager to take pictures so there were many to accompany articles. Advisor Kathy Wilgers said she was pleased with the efforts of the 1994-1995 Collegian staff and the of this year's Collegian.

The 1994-1995 Debate Squad had a spectacular year, especially in self-growth. The squad was privileged to get new assistant coach Jason Hartwig. Jason came to Southwestern after deba ting at the U niversi ty of South Carolina and coaching at the University of Wyoming. The squad also had many freshmen who added to the diversity of the squad. The debaters performed outstandingly on the national circuit competing with much larger universities. But the debate squad is most proud of their accomplish ments that happened outside of competition. The members of the squad partici pated in two service projects. The first of these projects is an annual tradition for the debate squad. They adopt a needy family from Winfield and buy them food and household goods for Christmas time. The second service project that the debate squad sponsored wasan all-campus clothing drive for Bosnian refugees in Northern Italy. After spending all year debating about the bad things that go on in the world, the debaters like to do their part to change at least their little comer of the world. The debate squad isalso very proud of their accomplishment at the 1995 Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Tournament and Conference. All of the debaters whoattended presented papers on panels. Jeff Clark was on the panel "Making Forensics More Accessible for the Novice." K.J. Pittman, Chris Burley, Shannon Clements, and Jennifer Crispin wereon the panel "Rhetorical Biases in Forensics: Do Words Empower Participants in Competition?" Coach Jennifer Morgan was the chair and Assistant Coach Hartwig was the respondent for the latter panel. At the National Convention, the Southwestern College chapter of Pi Kappa Delta was honored as an Outstanding Cha pter by the na tional commi ttee. This a ward was one of only six given to schools from across the nation.

At Southwestern College, Martin Luther King Day is an important holiday. This year Dawn Pleas-Bailey led the students in making this a memorable event. Dawn wanted M.L.K. day to be student led and to bring everyone into the celebration of this day. She encouraged all students to join and become active. The students who did something for the convocaton were asked to use their creativity in what they wanted to do. Students were told to use their own ideas and have fun. The convocation was a huge success and everyone involved did a great job.

One of the new and exciting organizations on campus is the Leadership Team. After going through a selective process based on grades, pre vious leadership experience, essays, and an inter view with the team's sponsor Cheryl Rude, fif teen members were selected. The first half of the year included a class and weekly meetings to dis cuss how individual projects were progressing. Second semester was the team unifying experi ence as everyone became closer. The mission trip to cemented all that had been learned throughout the year. Character development was accomplished as individual had to create his own personal mission statement and work as a team, illustrating this organization. This was truly a landmark year for Phi Delta Theta and for Southwestern College. On April 8, 1995, the Kansas Zeta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta was installed as the 235th Chapter in North America, the sixth Chapter in Kansas, and the first interna tional fraternity at Southwestern. Our activities this year were focused on our chapter installation. But we did con duct a few activities such as helping to organzie two blood drives, initiating 28 new members, raising money for disaster victims of the Oklahoma City bombing, raising over 300 cans of food for-the Winfield food pantry at our first annual casino party, and some of the most exciting social events on and off campus. In the next few years, Phi Delta Theta will use its resources, the leadership of its members, and help of our alumni to set the standard for brotherhood at Southwestern College.

S H A R P

The Student Host and Recruitment Program (SHARP) Ambassadors have an extremely important role on campus. Basically, the Ambassadors are in charge of presenting the campus to prospective students and their families. They do this by giving the students and their families campus tours and taking them to SC events such as football and basketball garnes, as well as theater presentations and . Many times the Ambassadors take the responsibility of hosting a prospective student for the night or an entire weekend. This allows the prospect to experience the dorms as well as a few meals in the cafeteria. It also allows the students to engage in more interaction with current students than would be possible during regular campus visits. The Ambassadors take time out of their busy schedules to contact pro spective students through the mail or by calling them. They also travel to churches around the state to give special talks designed to inform students and their families about Southwestern. With all the students out there, the Ambassador's jobs are never done.

In the last year or two, it started on College and flowed down Warren in front of Stewart Fieldhouse. Due to public opinion it was decided to return to Main Street between Fourteenth and Eighth. On August 20, 1994, 142 unsuspect ing freshmen set out to make their prescence known to the community of Winfield in a productive manner.
