Abstract Four species of plant parasitic nematodes were present in soil samples planted with forage legumes at Alachua County, Florida, USA. The detected species Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Criconemella ornate, Hoplolaimus galeatus, and Paratrichodorus minor were described in the present study. They belong to orders Rhabditida (Belonolaimus longicaudatus, Criconemella ornate, and Hoplolaimus galeatus) and Triplonchida (Paratrichodorus minor) and to taxonomical families Dolichodoridae (Belonolaimus longicaudatus), Hoplolaimidae (Hoplolaimus galeatus) Criconematidae (Criconemella ornate), and Trichodoridae (Paratrichodorus minor). The identification of the present specimens was based on the classical taxonomy, following morphological and morphometrical characters in the species specific identification keys. The risk to California from Dolichodorus heterocephalus is described herein and a permanent pest rating is proposed. History & Status: Background: The genus Dolichodorus was created by Cobb (1914) when he named D. heterocephalus collected from fresh water at Silver Springs, Florida and Douglas Lake, Michigan. This nematode is a migratory ectoparasite that feeds only from the outside on the cells, on the root surfaces, and mainly at root tip. They live freely in the soil and feed on plants without becoming attached or entering inside the roots. Males and females are both present. This genus is notable in that its members are relatively large for plant parasites and have long stylets. Usually, awl nematodes are found in moist to wet soil, low areas of fields, and near irrigation ditches and other bodies of fresh water. Because they prefer moist to wet soils, they rarely occur in agricultural fields and are not as well studied as other plant-parasitic nematodes (Crow and Brammer, 2003). The tobacco stunt nematode, Tylenchorhynchus claytoni., is one of the more serious plant-parasitic nematodes in North Carolina. It was first described from specimens collected around and in roots of stunted to- bacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum L.) (STEINER, 1937). This nematode was found in soil from 6/% of 175 tobacco fields sampled in South Carolina (GRAHAM, 1954). Besides reproducing on cotton and tobacco it also reduced the root systems and caused stunting of these plants in the greenhouse. T. claytoni severely reduced the root systems of hybrid corn breeding lines in greenhouse tests (NELSON, 1956). Several in- breds were resistant resulting in reduction of the nematode populations. This species has been causing considerable damage to tobacco in North Carolina (DROLSOM & MOORE, 1955), and a recently developed variety (Dixie Bright 101) is reported to support larger nematode populations than old line varieties (NUSBAUM, 1954). T. claytoni has been found in golf green turfs (TROLL & TARJAN, 1954), in the soil around roots of sugar cane, strawberry, camellia, sweet potato and rice (MARTIN & BIRCHFIELD, 1955), and in the rhizospheres of chlorotic and stunted peanut plants (BOYLE, 1950). Host-parasite relations have been studied with two other Tylencho- rhynchus species. The relations of T. dubius Biltschli to cotton and Te- pary bean (Phaseolits acutifolius, Gray, var. latifolius, Freem.) were investigated in Arizona (REYNOLDS & EVANS, 1953). Nematodes ap- peared to feed on the epidermal tissues of young roots and larvae were found inside some small secondary roots. -

Nematode biodiver- sity of 250 soil and root samples was examined. Thirty nematode species were identified morphologically, including plant parasites, microbivores and mycetophagous and predator species. Molecular techniques were also used for further identification of three plant parasitic species. Indicators of population were also estimated. Spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus crenacauda Sher, 1966 and H. digiti- formis Ivanova, 1967) and stunt nematode (Tylenchorhynchus agri) were the predominant parasitic species identified. Among other species, three mononchid species were identified namely Mononchus aquaticus, Mylonchulus sigmaturus and M. polonicus. Contrasting socio-economic systems in the trans-border regions Andalusia – Algarve Author(s): José Andres Dominguez 1 and Teresa de Noronha Vaz 2** Abstract The goal of this work is to detect the basic characteristics of the development of the southern border between Spain and Portugal. This trans-border area is described and analyzed comparing the region of Algarve, in Portugal and the region of the County, in Huelva, Spain. The method used 15 quantitative indicators, desegregated at municipal level, obtained from different official sources and applied to 30 municipalities. The analysis includes multivariate statistic methods. The conclusions show that those indicators related to national governance systems are of utmost importance in the cluster classification. Furthermore, those municipalities with higher development levels are also less sustainable from the environmental point of view – this is probably due to the fact that tourism supports the fragile socio-economic systems in many of such regions. Significantly, the clustering tendencies show that the Portuguese municipalities are tourism oriented (or less tourism oriented) and the Spanish ones are agri- business (or less agribusiness oriented). Lastly, such geographic structures seem to have its roots in long term paths of development. Antonio Baeza2,3,4* Abstract Background: The plant-parasitic nematode Hoplolaimus columbus is a pathogen that uses a wide range of hosts and causes substantial yield loss in agricultural felds in North America. This study describes, for the frst time, the complete mitochondrial genome of H. columbus from South Carolina, USA. Methods: The mitogenome of H. columbus was assembled from Illumina 300 bp pair-end reads. It was annotated and compared to other published mitogenomes of plant-parasitic nematodes in the superfamily Tylenchoidea. The phylogenetic relationships between H. columbus and other 6 genera of plant-parasitic nematodes were examined using protein-coding genes (PCGs). Results: The mitogenome of H. columbus is a circular AT-rich DNA molecule 25,228 bp in length. The annotation result comprises 12 PCGs, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 19 transfer RNA genes. No atp8 gene was found in the mitog- enome of H. columbus but long non-coding regions were observed in agreement to that reported for other plant- parasitic nematodes. The mitogenomic phylogeny of plant-parasitic nematodes in the superfamily Tylenchoidea agreed with previous molecular phylogenies. Mitochondrial gene synteny in H. columbus was unique but similar to that reported for other closely related species. Conclusions: The mitogenome of H. columbus is unique within the superfamily Tylenchoidea but exhibits similarities in both gene content and synteny to other closely related nematodes. -
