Executive Summary The AIA Powerplant Indications Task Team was formed July 2001 in response to the FAA draft Harmonization Terms of Refer- ence (HTOR) 25.1305. The team was subsequently sanctioned by the AIA as the Powerplant Indications Task Team. The team includes representation from several Airframe Manufacturers, Engine Manufacturers and Regulatory Agencies. The AIA PITT was an active working group from late 2001 through mid-2006. After 2006 the team gradually prepared a team report via ad hoc team telecons. The team has provided: • A Powerplant Indications input to the Avionics Systems Harmonization Working Group (ASHWG) draft AC/AMC 25-11 Electronic Displays. Much of the AIA Powerplant Indications Task Team input was incorporated in revision AC25-11A released by the FAA in June, 2007 • A revision proposal to FAR/CS §25.1305 “Powerplant instruments”. The proposed §25.1305 allows for use of the exist- ing prescriptive list of powerplant indications (updated in some areas) or alternatively an objective-based approach for some or all powerplant indications. A notable addition to the prescriptive list is the requirement for an engine fail (sub- idle) indication. • Recommendations for a revision to FAR/CS §25.1549 “Powerplant and auxiliary power unit instruments”. §25.1549 requires revision to align with current accepted practices and to allow for alignment with crew alerting requirements of §25.1322. • Recommendations for a revision of AC20-88A, to align with current accepted practices and to allow for alignment with crew alerting requirements of §25.1322. AC20-88A is outdated relative to current design practice (i.e. glass flight decks). • Recommendations for a revision to FAR/CS §25.1337 “Powerplant instruments”. §25.1337 is in some cases redundant to other, existing regulations and in some cases outdated relative to current technology. In addition, §25.1337 is a mix of flammable fluid requirements, indications requirements and fire safety requirements. The AIA Powerplant Indications Task Team recommends that these different types of requirements be grouped appropriately within the Code of Federal Regulations. • A white paper intended for the FAA Engine and Propeller Directorate and EASA Engine Certification branch regarding “Engine Parameter Indication and Certification: The Integration of Engine TCDS Limits and Their Role in Aircraft Safety”. This paper addresses the current practice of treating all engine certification limits as safe operating limits and therefore marking their airplane indications with redlines and, in some cases, associating flight deck warnings lights or messages. This is often inconsistent with aircraft display philosophy and airplane certification requirements. • A response to HTOR 25.1305, and • A Team Report, which this document comprises.   • Propeller Aerodynamics CONSTANT-SPEED PROPELLER
    Constant-speed propeller Centrifugal twisting force. This is the opposing force to the aerodynamic twist- ing moment. Because this force is greater, it tries to move the blades toward a reduced blade angle. A propeller is designed to withstand the effect of these forces, but the forces are nonetheless important factors in design and operation. The effect of these forces accu- mulates across the length of the blade with the greatest stress at the hub. As the rota- tional speed of the propeller increases, so too do the stresses acting upon it. Given the various forces acting upon a propeller, it is not difficult to understand the serious prob- lem associated with even small nicks or scratches that could weaken the integrity of the propeller. Propeller aerodynamics To understand how a propeller moves an aircraft through the air, it is necessary to look at it from an aerodynamic rather than a mechanical perspective. Figure 5-6 depicts the side view of a propeller detailing the blade path, blade chord, and relative wind. The illustration reveals two types of motion associated with the propeller blades: rota- tional and forward. As a blade moves downward, it simultaneously moves forward. This has a significant effect on the relative wind making it strike the blade at an angle that is between straight ahead and straight down. This angle that the relative wind strikes the blade is called the angle of attack. The relative wind hitting the descending blade is deflected rearward causing the dynamic pressure on the engine side of the blade to be greater than the pressure on the back of the blade.

ABSTRACT This report addresses the author’s Group Design Project (GDP) and Individual Research Project (IRP). The IRP is discussed primarily herein, presenting the actuation technology for the Flight Control System (FCS) on civil aircraft. Actuation technology is one of the key technologies for next generation More Electric Aircraft (MEA) and All Electric Aircraft (AEA); it is also an important input for the preliminary design of the Flying Crane, the aircraft designed in the author’s GDP. Information regarding actuation technologies is investigated firstly. After initial comparison and engineering consideration, Electrohydrostatic Actuation (EHA) and variable area actuation are selected for further research. The tail unit of the Flying Crane is selected as the case study flight control surfaces and is analysed for the requirements. Based on these requirements, an EHA system and a variable area actuation system powered by localised hydraulic systems are designed and sized in terms of power, mass and Thermal Management System (TMS), and thereafter the reliability of each system is estimated and the safety is analysed.

    PROPELLER OPERATION AND MALFUNCTIONS BASIC FAMILIARIZATION FOR FLIGHT CREWS INTRODUCTION The following is basic material to help pilots understand how the propellers on turbine engines work, and how they sometimes fail. Some of these failures and malfunctions cannot be duplicated well in the simulator, which can cause recognition difficulties when they happen in actual operation. This text is not meant to replace other instructional texts. However, completion of the material can provide pilots with additional understanding of turbopropeller operation and the handling of malfunctions. GENERAL PROPELLER PRINCIPLES Propeller and engine system designs vary widely. They range from wood propellers on reciprocating engines to fully reversing and feathering constant- speed propellers on turbine engines. Each of these propulsion systems has the similar basic function of producing thrust to propel the airplane, but with different control and operational requirements. Since the full range of combinations is too broad to cover fully in this summary, it will focus on a typical system for transport category airplanes - the constant speed, feathering and reversing propellers on turbine engines. Major propeller components The propeller consists of several blades held in place by a central hub. The propeller hub holds the blades in place and is connected to the engine through a propeller drive shaft and a gearbox. There is also a control system for the propeller, which will be discussed later. Modern propellers on large turboprop airplanes typically have 4 to 6 blades. Other components typically include: The spinner, which creates aerodynamic streamlining over the propeller hub. The bulkhead, which allows the spinner to be attached to the rest of the propeller.
