GEORGE Mccrae: ROCK YOUR BABY GEORGE McCRAE: ROCK YOUR BABY Hoe dikwijls hebben we het al geschreven en gezegd: er worden tegenwoordig geen songs en geen albums meer gemaakt gelijk vroeger. Is dat een teken dat wij ouder worden of een uiting van nostalgische gevoelens? Wel neen, vroeger maakte men songs die blijven, die ondertussen klassiekers geworden zijn. Zoals Seal het onlangs op zijn live dvd ‘Soul Live’ zei: “I wish I could write songs like this songs.” En zo’n vijfendertig jaar geleden was er zo’n liedje dat nog steeds gedraaid wordt, nl. ‘Rock Your Baby’ van George McCrae. George werd geboren op negentien oktober 1944 in West Palm Beach, Florida, als tweede in een gezin met negen kinderen, als zoon van een politieagent. Op zesjarige leeftijd zong hij, net als zijn moeder, in het kerkkoor. Toen hij op school zat was hij lid van The Stepbrothers en The Jivin’ Jets. Tussen 1963 en 1967 zat hij bij de Navy. Daardoor viel die laatste groep uiteen, maar na zijn dienstplicht richtte hij die weer op en zijn vriendin Gwen Mosley werd bij de groep ingelijfd. Het koppel trouwde maar na zes maand koos het duo voor een solocarrière. Ze konden een platencontract binnenrijven en namen twee singles op, waarvan ‘Three Hearts In A Tangle’ bij Alston Records de eerste was. Met de laatste, ‘Lead Me On’, kreeg Gwen echter een contract als soloartieste bij Columbia Records aangeboden. Tussendoor zou volgens geruchten op het Internet, George in 1969 background vocals gezongen hebben op het nummer ‘Someday We'll Be Together’ van The Supremes. George zette zijn muzikale carrière stop, ging criminologie studeren en werd manager van zijn vrouw. Naar aanleiding van de top twintig hit ‘For Your Love’ uit 1973 nam George samen met Gwen toch weer de draad op. Wanneer Gwen te laat was voor een sessie in de studio nam George haar taak over. Harry Wayne Casey (KC, ja van The Sunshine Band) en Richard Finch hadden in 1974 het liedje ‘Rock Your Baby’ geschreven, en Henry Stone, platenbaas van T.K. Records, stelde voor dat Gwen McCrae een goede keuze zou zijn om dat nummer in te zingen. KC en zijn groep hadden de backing track opgenomen als demo, maar vond zelf dat de song te hoog was om zelf in te zingen. Toen Gwen niet kwam opdagen, en George toevallig in de studio was, kreeg hij de kans en de rest is geschiedenis. Met zijn aanstekelijk ritme en George’s falset stem werd dit een gehaaide hit. Het nummer stond op één zowel in de Amerikaanse, de Britse, de Nederlandse en de Belgische charts. Er zouden wereldwijd elf miljoen exemplaren van verkocht worden. George was echter niet voorbereid op die plotse aandacht, en had er moeite mee. ‘Rock Your Baby’ werd door het magazine ‘Rolling Stone’ tot nummer één van 1974 uitgeroepen, en George kreeg een nominatie voor de Grammy Award als beste mannelijke R&B zanger. Maar een opvolger voor die monsterhit vinden was minder evident. De elpee kwam uit, en volgens mij stond de A kant vol met potentiële hits, maar enkel het nummer ‘I Can’t Leave You Alone (I Keep Holdin’ On)’ slaagde er in om de top tien te halen. Uiteraard had hij in de daaropvolgende jaren nog hits met andere songs, maar het succes van ‘Rock Your Baby’ zou hij nooit meer evenaren. ‘Rock Your Baby’ werd in 1975 de inspiratiebron voor het liedje ‘Rockin’ Chair’ van vrouwtje Gwen McCrae. Zijn populariteit zorgde echter voor toenemende spanningen binnen zijn huwelijk en na tien jaar ging het koppel in 1977 uiteen. George hertrouwde en verhuisde naar Canada. Maar hij ging failliet en ook dit huwelijk eindigde in een echtscheiding. In het begin van de jaren tachtig liet hij de muziek voor wat ze was en werkte als hotelportier en supermarktbediende. In 1984 werd de lokroep van de muziek werd te sterk en George ging weer aan de slag. Jaren geleden zag ik hem live aan het werk tijdens de Druivenfeesten in Overijsse. Vooraf kon ik hem even spreken en toen bleek dat hij al jaren getrouwd was met een Nederlandse en afwisselend op Aruba en in Nederland woonde. De krabbel die u rechtsonder op de hoes van mijn elpee ziet, is George’s handtekening. In 2004 coverde de Italiaanse zangeres Spagna ‘Rock Your baby’ op haar album ‘L’arte di arrangiarsi’. First, though, comes the lead-in show, “Monday Night Countdown.” The inherent challenge here, it seems to an outsider, is to make more than two hours of older men sitting down, talking, and not playing football remotely compelling to watch. To keep the energy level high, the network uses brash-talking commentators, action-packed game highlights, fancy graphics,proof and, very selectively, music. As the show goes to its last commercial, the camera pulls back from the broadcasters and an up-tempo song blares briefly.
