SHOW 21 DISC 4 TRACKS 9,10, & 11 1. This five-man band is from Isla Vista, California; Quite a colorful bunch .... and Whitfield Crane and Klaus Eichstadt told us about all the guys in UGLY KID JOE: UGLY KID JOE ACTUALITY: (:49) "It's crazy. You think, really crazy? Yeah, totally. What's the word, outspoken? Obnoxious? I'm pretty quiet and mellow. Cordell is like kind of the hippy. He wears his great grandma's blue glasses like the rims, they're like a hundred years old, and he drives his grandma's Volvo, like a green Volvo, loves like the Ohio Players and stuff like that. He's just this mellow dude. Roger is the college graduate, so he actually could get a job in the real world. And Mark is the drummer. He's in everything, like if you talk about being a lumberjack, he says 'I used to be one of those, you know, I remember that.' He's been like a Skate Rat, he's worked in a grocery store for eight years in Monticito and wore a short haired wig to work. He knows stupid little facts too. He's like the fact king. 'Did you know that Vodka is made from a potato or something like that." 2. Joey Lawrence plays the role of Joey Russo on the TV show, 'Blossom' He talked to us about the character: JOEY LAWRENCE ACTUALITY: (:28) "Joey Russo is sort of, really kind of stupid guy, but he's really a great guy. He's very kind, he wouldn't hurt anybody, and he's really sensitive, and there's certain things that do bother him. He wouldn't hurt a soul and I think that's what makes people like him so much ... is that people can first of all relate with him about the whole school problem. You know, some people, school is just not for them. He had a dream of becoming a major league baseball player and he's really close it. He's like a stupid jock, but he's a great guy and that's just the way it is." 3. We spoke with Mark White, the bass player of the band, Spin Doctors, about the chemistry of having the right players in a group -- finding the right sound. Mark was also the last man to join the other three members. We asked him what his first impression was of the other guys? MARK WHITE ACTUALITY: (:38) "I thought they were freaks man. I thought they were bums, they were dressed so bad, it was unbelievable. They were like smart. I never met musicians that were so smart, they knew exactly what they were. They're in control. Most cats aren't in control, like the way these guys were and everything was done, like business-wise, you know, but with a lot of fun though. The first show that we did, I knew really wanted to be part of the band. The first show that we did Rehearsals, I didn't know what was going on, but during, the first time I played, thJt was the most fun I've ever had on stage and so, I was totally into the band. It was ,1 total winning situation, right from day one, everybody just had a good time." AIR DATE WEEKEND: 5/23/93 o IABC Watermark I HOURS 1 & 2 SHOW#gi 3575 Cahuenga. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Aaron Comess His Own Spin Interview: Mover - Photos: Dana Yavin It was 1991... back in the day. When MTV actually played music videos, and the radio actually played new songs from new artists, and, as strange as it sounds, you could actually get turned on to some really great music and bands. It was also back in the day when so many artists were producing hit after hit and record after record using drum machines and samples. Then along come Aaron Comess and the Spin Doctors and blow it right out of the water. Who needs a sample when you have that crack from a Brady snare? Who needs a drum machine when you’ve got a groove that not only can make a click disappear, it can make even someone with two left feet get off his ass and dance? While most bands have a signature to their sound–almost always the vocalist or guitarist–consider how rare it is to find a band that is immediately identifiable by the drummer; his groove and his sound. Well, Aaron Comess is such a drummer, and here’s his ‘spin’ on things. 024 024_AaronComess_13_FNL.indd 24 4/16/15 8:43 PM JM: When the Spin Doctors hit the that for a while and try to make a living on some of the record. First, though, comes the lead-in show, “Monday Night Countdown.” The inherent challenge here, it seems to an outsider, is to make more than two hours of older men sitting down, talking, and not playing football remotely compelling to watch. To keep the energy level high, the network uses brash-talking commentators, action-packed game highlights, fancy graphics, proof and, very selectively, music. As the show goes to its last commercial, the camera pulls back from the broadcasters and an up-tempo song blares briefly.

  • Jams and Jokes –The Spin Doctors 'Rock the Dock' Spin Doctors
Jams and jokes –The Spin Doctors ‘Rock the Dock' Posted by TBN Editor On 08/03/2017 Spin Doctors and vocalist Chris Barron perform their signature hit "Two Princes." Chesapeake Beach, MD - It will take more than a sound system glitch to thwart the band the Spin Doctors in their pursuit of entertaining an audience. The blues rock band—originally called “Trucking Company” when they were formed in New York City during the late 1980s—performed Wednesday evening, Aug. 2 at Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa as part of that venue’s 2017 Rock the Dock series. At an early juncture of the Spin Doctors’ performance a portion of the speaker system went silent. Hardly missing a beat, lead vocalist Chris Barron told the audience a few dog and pirate jokes. Fortunately, the system was quickly repaired and the jam session resumed. The Spin Doctors' moments in the limelight have included memorable appearances on the iconic television shows Saturday Night Live and Sesame Street. Their live show at the Chesapeake Beach band shell was well-received by the audience, many of whom stormed the front of the stage when the group performed their signature hit, the Grammy-nominated “Two Princes.” In addition to Barron, the group includes bass guitarist Mark White, drummer Aaron Comess and guitarist Eric Schenkman. The “Fat Whiskey Band” opened the show for the Spin Doctors, who resume their tour, which includes performances in Virginia Beach, VA at Neptune’s Park (Aug. 15) and Aug. 19 in Raleigh NC. The intermission featured something new at Chesapeake Beach Resort and Spa, as about 20 specially made T-shirts promoting the venue’s gaming facility, were tossed to the audience.
