Bulk sampling and extensive, systematic surface collecting of the Coon Creek Member of the Ripley Formation (early Maastrichtian) at the Blue Springs locality and primarily bulk sampling of the Owl Creek Formation (late Maastrichtian) at the Owl Creek type locality, both in northeast Mississippi, USA, have produced the largest and most highly diversified actinopterygian otolith (ear stone) assemblage described from the Mesozoic of North America. The 3,802 otoliths represent 30 taxa of bony fishes representing at least 22 families. In addition, there were two different morphological types of lapilli, which were not identifiable to species level.

A very considerable number of bulletins and of miscellaneous papers has been published by the Division, references to some of which are included in the hterature cited (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 27, 28)} This investigation has led far afield and into studies not directly connected with soil analysis {17, 18, 20, 24). Among the things that have been demonstrated is that selenium instead of being of infrequent occurrence is extraordinarily widely distributed and is probably present in all soils. It appears, also, that selenium is present in many thousands of square miles of soils in sufficient concentration to produce some vegetation toxic to animals, and it is suggested, therefore, that the term ''seleniferous soils'' be appHed only to areas capable of producing toxic vegetation.

    Early Discoveries of Dinosaurs From North America and the Significance of the Springfield Armory Dinosaur Site Vincent L. Santucci National Park Service, P.O. Box 592, Kemmerer, WY 83101 Abstract—Prior to the "Great American Dinosaur Rush" during the late 1800s, there were relatively few dinosaur sites recorded in North America. Hadrosaurus foulkii is recognized as the first articulated dinosaur collected, described and displayed in the New World. Most of the early discoveries consist of the fossil trackways from the Connecticut Valley and few partial dinosaur skeletons. The type specimen of the prosauropod dinosaur Anchisaurus polyzelus is recognized as one of the earliest dinosaur discoveries in North America. The fossil bones of Anchisaurus were uncovered during a blasting operation at the armory in Springfield, Massachusetts in the early 1800s. The excavation at this site is an important record in the early history of the science of dinosaur paleontology in North America. Introduction Prior to the 1870s and the "Great Era of Dinosaur Discoveries" there is a limited history for dinosaur paleontology in North America. Relatively few dinosaur specimens were recovered prior to the American Civil War. There appeared to be a general lack of interest in the petrifications of ancient life during the first half of the 19th century. The description and naming of the dinosaur remains often came long after their discovery. Ebersole3 1 School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol, Bristol, UK 2 Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida, USA 3 McWane Science Center, Birmingham, Alabama, USA ABSTRACT The cranial and postcranial anatomy of the basal hadrosaurid dinosaur Eotrachodon orientalis, from the uppermost Santonian of southern Appalachia (southeastern U.S.A.), is described in detail. This animal is the only known pre-Campanian non-lambeosaurine hadrosaurid, and the most complete hadrosauroid known from Appalachia. E. orientalis possesses a mosaic of plesiomorphic and derived characters in the context of Hadrosauroidea. Characters shared with basal hadrosauroids include a short and sloping maxillary ectopterygoid shelf, caudally prominent maxillary jugal process, one functional tooth per alveolus on the maxillary occlusal plane, a jugal rostral process with a shallow caudodorsal margin and medioventrally facing articular facet, a vertical dentary coronoid process with a poorly expanded apex, and tooth crowns with accessory ridges. Derived characters shared with other hadrosaurids include a circumnarial depression compartmented into three fossae (as in brachylophosaurins and Edmontosaurus), a thin everted premaxillary oral margin (as in Gryposaurus, Prosaurolophus, and Saurolophus), and a maxilla with a deep and rostrocaudally extensive rostrodorsal region with a steeply sloping premaxillary margin (as in Gryposaurus). Orndorff INTRODUCTION The central bedrock sheet (scale 1:100,000) covers an area of approximately 2,300 square mi in central New Jersey. Parts of two large sedimentary basins crop out within the borders of this geologic map. The early Mesozoic Newark basin is exposed in the norm, and a Cretaceous to Miocene basin is present in the south. A thin salient of Proterozoic and lower Paleozoic rocks separates the two basins in the vicinity of Trenton. Thus, rocks exposed in the central bedrock sheet range in age from Middle Proterozoic to Miocene. Younger sediments are widespread within the map area, but these are shown on a separate surficial geologic map. Maps showing the generalized regional distribution of early Mesozoic basins and Coastal Plain basins and arches are illustrated in figure 1.

    PSEG Site ESP Application Part 2, Site Safety Analysis Report 2.5 GEOLOGY, SEISMOLOGY, AND GEOTECHNICAL INFORMATION This section provides information on the geology, seismology, and geotechnical characteristics of the PSEG Site. The section follows the standard format and content prescribed in Regulatory Guide (RG) 1.206, Combined License Applications for Nuclear Power Plants (LWR Edition), Revision 0, 2007. Further, the technical content complies with RG 1.208, A Performance-Based Approach to Define the Site-Specific Earthquake Ground Motion, Revision 0, 2007, for guidance respective to the level of investigation recommended at different distances from a proposed site for a nuclear facility. A particular focus is on data developed since the publication of the Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (UFSAR) for licensing Salem Generating Station (SGS) and the Hope Creek Generating Station (HCGS) in the same site area. The PSEG Site is located on the southern part of Artificial Island on the east bank of the Delaware River in Lower Alloways Creek Township, Salem County, New Jersey. The SGS and HCGS are adjacent to the planned new plant location. The site is relatively level with existing surface grades ranging nominally from elevation 5 to 15 feet (ft.), North American Vertical Datum 88 (NAVD). Investigations to obtain the data discussed in Section 2.5 were performed by MACTEC Engineering and Consulting, Inc. (with William Lettis Associates, Inc.) working under the overall direction of Sargent and Lundy, LLC. Field investigation work includes geologic mapping, geotechnical borings, surveying and geophysical testing as briefly described below. Laboratory testing of selected samples was performed.
