STRUGGLE FOR EAST-EUROPEAN EMPIRE: 1400-1700 The Crimean Khanate, Ottomans and the Rise of the Russian Empire* HALİL İNALCIK The empire of the Golden Horde, built by Batu, son of Djodji and the grand son of Genghis Khan, around 1240, was an empire which united the whole East-Europe under its domination. The Golden Horde empire comprised ali of the remnants of the earlier nomadic peoples of Turkic language in the steppe area which were then known under the common name of Tatar within this new political framework. The Golden Horde ruled directly över the Eurasian steppe from Khwarezm to the Danube and över the Russian principalities in the forest zone indirectly as tribute-paying states. Already in the second half of the 13th century the western part of the steppe from the Don river to the Danube tended to become a separate political entity under the powerful emir Noghay. In the second half of the 14th century rival branches of the Djodjid dynasty, each supported by a group of the dissident clans, started a long struggle for the Ulugh-Yurd, the core of the empire in the lower itil (Volga) river, and for the title of Ulugh Khan which meant the supreme ruler of the empire. Toktamish Khan restored, for a short period, the unity of the empire. When defeated by Tamerlane, his sons and dependent clans resumed the struggle for the Ulugh-Khan-ship in the westem steppe area. During ali this period, the Crimean peninsula, separated from the steppe by a narrow isthmus, became a refuge area for the defeated in the steppe. -

ARTICLES MONARCHIENS ET MONARCHIE EN EXIL : CONJONCTURES DE LA MONARCHIE DANS L’ÉMIGRATION FRANÇAISE, 1792‒17991 Friedemann PESTEL Le débat sur la restauration de la monarchie commence au moment de la chute de Louis XVI en 1792. Il s’est intensifié dans l’émigra- tion française. En analysant les relations entre les « monarchiens », monarchistes constitutionnels favorisant un système bicamériste, et les Bourbons en exil, cet article montre comment l’idée d’un rétablis- sement de l’Ancien Régime, souvent associé aux émigrés, est suc- cessivement écartée par les Bourbons. Les confrontations et coopé- rations politiques avec les monarchiens démontrent dans quelle mesure la pensée politique du futur Louis XVIII, dans les années 1790, s’oriente vers une monarchie constitutionnelle qui, déjà avant Brumaire, anticipe des éléments centraux de la Restauration de 1814. Hannah Black Ruin/Rien Ruin/Rien links together a cluster of events associated with the French Revolution in the late 18th century and the concept of the autonomous artwork. On the day of the storming of the Bastille, King Louis XVI wrote a single word in his diary: “rien” (nothing). This has been interpreted as a sign of the aristocracy’s disconnect from the activities of the proletariat. But it is more likely to have been simply a reference to the day’s hunt, in which the king killed nothing. The word “RIEN” appears here as a six-foot painting based on Ed Ruscha’s famous painting Oof. Ruscha was part of a movement of artists who played at the boundary of two ideas: that art draws its power from a kind of semantic emptiness, and that this emptiness itself characterizes everyday urban life. During the storming of the Bastille, a protestor found and rescued a manuscript tucked into the walls of a prison cell. This was the work of a recent inhabitant, the Marquis de Sade, who had been moved from the Bastille just 10 days previously. Bastille playfully reconstructs this anecdote in brick and paper, blocking out part of the outside world and evoking both the autonomy of minimalist sculpture and the prison cell. De Sade was a scion of the aristocracy but was sprung from his class position by his perverse sexual desires. A facing work, The Ruler, repurposes the cover of a famous heterosexual dating manual offering “capture”, gesturing to how, just as much as some desires can dislodge us from social norms, others can fuse us more closely to them. -

French Revolution Pamphlets Collection 544 Items, 1779-1815 16 Boxes; 4.8 cu. ft. History The French Revolution Pamphlets Collection was purchased in 1973 from Mrs. Frances Reynolds. It was originally acquired by Ball State University to assist an increasing number of history and French students in their research and studies. It was also purchased in the hopes that Ball State’s Ph.D. program in History would be approved in the same year. It was meant to be a foundation for research in the field of modern Europe. At the time of acquisition, Dr. Richard Wires, chairman of the Department of History, wrote in support of the purchase, stating "… we have an increasing number of students who do work in this period for History and French credit and such source material is extremely valuable for their research and studies." Though the Ph.D. program never came to fruition, the French Revolution Pamphlet Collection remains an important resource for students and researchers. The effects of the French Revolution were far reaching and global. The resulting wars propelled Britain to global dominance. France’s navy was in shambles and its empire lost. Spain and Holland were broken as imperial powers. Radical ideas on rights, citizenship, and role of the state developed. The revolution heavily influenced conceptions of liberty and democracy. It also promoted nationalism and citizenship. Many historians consider the French Revolution as the beginning of Modern Europe. The example of the American Revolution and the growth of new ideas amongst the Bourgeoisie began to stir up revolutionary ideas among the French. -

Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism. -

American and Russian Imperialism American Imperialism At the end of the 19th century, the USA tried successfully to enlarge its spheres of influence* inside and outside the Americas. It started to play a more active role in global politics than it did before and used military force to achieve its goals. But which driving forces were responsible for such a change? First, the industrial revolution* had created challenges that required a new outlook. The production of more 5 goods and the need for additional sources of raw materials and new markets called for Americans to begin to look further than their home country. Second, the USA had been driven by the idea of Manifest Destiny,* the idea that the U.S. was to expand over the whole continent of North America. With the ending of the frontier* and the completion of westward expansion, the conviction grew that the United States would have to find new outlets for its increasing population as well as its agricultural and industrial production. Other reasons to take part in the 10 Imperialist struggle were national prestige as one of the global powers and also security concerns. The seizure of the Philippines from Spain was – at least in part – driven by an American desire to keep the islands out of Japan - ese hands. To promote its new policy of expansion, the USA needed more military power, especially sea power. This was in part due to the success of Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan, founder of the Naval War College in Newport, 15 Rhode Island. He wrote a popular book – The Influence of Sea Power upon History – that called for the USA to improve its strength on the basis of sea power which he thought to be a decisive force, making nations and em- pires great and able to stand the test of time.
