Despite the profound legal and social meaning of the Brown v. Board of Education (1954) decision, the fight to truly eliminate desegregation practices within the U.S. education system was just beginning. Over the next decade, as more and more public schools systems truly began to integrate, private schools—especially religious private schools—became havens for whites seeking segregated education for their children. Why religious discriminatory academies grew in such significant numbers and became the primary shadow segregationist education in the U.S. during the 1960s through the 1980s remains a topic of debate. Some scholars have argued that the tax status of these schools made them more financially solvent than secular private schools that lost access to state funds through a series of legal injunctions in the 1970s. This dissertation examines how the financial considerations often attributed to the exponential increase in religious private academies in the wake of desegregation fail to recognize the longstanding theological dedication of white religious traditions to a segregated society. Far from being simple 7 tax havens for a secular effort to preserve segregation, these religious schools believed themselves to be protecting God’s mandate to keep the races separate. The ardent religious beliefs intertwined with the private academies’ discriminatory practices, however, created a challenge for the legal system attempting to grapple with the mandate to eliminate all support for discriminatory institutions by the government. The legal system was charged with determining a) if the segregationist practices of these institutions were religiously based and therefore protected by the First Amendment, and b) how to balance these First Amendment claims with the now constitutionally binding Brown decision. In grappling with these legal issues, governmental institutions confronted each other over how to balance between the right to church autonomy and religious free-expression and the mandates of desegregation. 8 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION In 1953, the U.S. Supreme Court legitimized one of the hardest fought legal challenges of the civil rights movement; school desegregation.     CANUP, WILLIAM SHANE, M.A. The Geography of Public-Private School Choice and Race: A Case Study of Sumter, Clarendon, and Lee Counties, South Carolina. (2015) Directed by Dr. Corey Johnson. 145 pp. This thesis analyzes the geography and history of public-private school choice, with particular concern to race, in a historically significant area where the first legal steps were taken to end segregation in public schools. The purpose is to identify how legacies of segregation have affected and continue to affect public-private school choice in area high schools today, examine which socioeconomic factors appear to most affect this choice, and determine the extent to which public schools in the study area reflect the racial demographic characteristics of their surrounding communities. To accomplish this, inquiry into the history of school segregation in the South, the emergence of private “segregation academies” during the era of integration, as well as contemporary trends in school choice are explored. Racial enrollment statistics from public and private schools are also compared to that of their attendance zones and surrounding areas. This research found that legacies of segregation likely continue to influence public- private school choice today, and that race and income also appear to be the socioeconomic factors that most affect whether families in the study area choose public or private school for their high school-aged children. Motivated by God’s promise to Abraham to “bless those” who showed favor to his progeny and fascinated by Israel’s role in End Times prophecy, politically conservative evangelical Christians worked tirelessly to promote the cause of the Jewish State to their American audience. As they gained influence within the American conservative movement, the rhetoric of New Christian Right activists like Jerry Falwell, Tim LaHaye, and Pat Robertson helped redefine Israel in the conservative imagination. In crafting an apocalyptic worldview that translated Israel’s spiritual significance into secular politics, the New Christian Right transformed American conservatism in ways still visible today.

INTRODUCTION In January 1970, a principal spoke to student assembly, newly desegregated, in the southern part of the state of Mississippi. “You people are in a history-making situation,” said B.J. Oswalt to the now unitary high school in Columbia. “It can happen only once and you are part of it. Now, what are you going to do?” It was a question the nation was asking, as Mississippi schools went through the most massive social change ever requested of any educational system in the United States. The response in Marion County was surprisingly constructive: the white student body president said, “If everybody can just treat everybody else as a human being, it might just turn out all right – be a big surprise to everybody.” And the black student body president flashed the peace symbol, a unifying gesture to both races, and predicted, “We can become a lighthouse in Marion County.” Three years later, it is apparent that Mississippi has not yet become that lighthouse and that it still contains potential for vicious racism.

Russell Hawkins This dissertation contends that religion played a critical role in explaining why and how white South Carolinians decided to resist changes in the racial caste system of their society during the middle decades of the last century. As early as 1950 with the first stirrings of desegregation occurring in their state, white evangelicals in the Palmetto State began making appeals to both the Bible and the natural world to derive a theology that emphasized the divine mandate for racial segregation.
