By GayCalgary Staff Fashion Priape held their Calgary installment of the International Mr. Priape Wear competition near the beginning of June. Crowds of people packed into the Calgary Eagle to witness the event, now in its second year. Competitors were judged on how well they modeled Priape clothing, as well as their stage presence and ability to talk on the microphone. Our regional winner was Ron Yakymyshyn, who went on to compete at the International fi nals in Montreal, but unfortunately did not place in the top three. The 2008 International Mr. Priape Wear winner is Tym Roders out of Vancouver. Nevertheless, Ron is still #1 in our books, and appears on our cover this month. 3 winners plus contest organizer Michael Ain

Atlanta’s Gaslight Inn (no relation to the same-named Se- attle property), with rates beginning at $115, is one of that city’s most stylish lodging options. The gay-owned, Crafts- man-style B&B in the cosmopolitan Virginia-Highland neigh- borhood exudes romance, with its plush canopy beds and, in some cases, whirlpool tubs and wood-burning fi replaces. Not far from Denver’s leafy Cheesman Park, the Capitol Hill Mansion (from $114) is a stately Queen Anne Victorian on an attractive residential street. Owners Jay Hadley and Carl Schmidt serve a lavish full breakfast each morning as well as refreshments and snacks in the afternoon; guests enjoy such pleasing amenities as free Wi-Fi and fresh fl owers in every room, and gas fi replaces, whirlpool tubs, and private balconies in the top units. New Orleans is perhaps the best example of a city that’s simply ideal if you love staying in smaller, historic proper- ties. Right in the heart of the French Quarter, a stone’s throw from the city’s hottest gay bars, you can fi nd rooms beginning at just $95 at the Bon Maison Guest House, an 1830s red-stucco town house that feels completely cloistered once you get past the entrance and sneak a peak of the delightful courtyard. And over in the city’s up-and-coming Mid-City neighborhood - close to City Park and a number of great restaurants - you can snag a room for as little as $99 in summer and $135 during busy times at the impeccably restored 1896 O’Malley House. Rooms at this gay-owned inn are spacious and fi lled with stunning antiques. You won’t

I guess you gotta take the good with the bad, and these guys don’t seem to mind. They automatically break off into subgroups with mutual interests, and every now and then someone wanders away and joins another cluster. The camera focuses on particular events, such as Dylan Parker asking to get gang-banged for the fi rst time, or the two Jacks getting frisky with one another. This three day event will keep you coming back every year for more! The only rule for the Western Canadian Pride Campout is to “leave your week behind”, and we could all use a bit of that. The Campout begins on Friday, August 1st and runs until Monday, August 4th, so mark your calendars. Tickets for the WCPC are available at www.wcpc.ca. If you pay online via Paypal, remember to bring your receipt. Undoubtably you will have many opportunities to express this freedom through an array of hilarious competitions, dances, and a few other surprises. In fact, one of the many highlights from past campouts have been the outlandish competitions. Attendees are broken down into tribes consisting of 6 to 8 participants - sometimes com- posed of friends, or soon-to-be friends. After choosing a name for your tribe (with face paint provided) each team will dress the part. There is no need for extreme physical strength or even aptitude in sports - in fact “your best tools will be a good sense of fair play and the ability to laugh at your friends.” Each event winner is awarded points, and the winning team is the one with the most points at the end. It pays to make your best effort to win, as prizes consist of $300 for best decorated campsite, $200 for best team costume, and $100 for most outlandish costume! Having fun is a requirement; anyone found not having fun will be arrested. Even the slightest hint of a pout will be found by the Social Police. Not to worry, your punishment is only to wear an incredibly tacky jail shirt, and to be carted off to a ‘rowdy’ campsite. While imprisoned, you will endure countless friendly people offering you their beer. Furthermore, you will be subjected to bad jokes and endless tales of WCPC’s past. The only way to escape is to make the jailors your friends…but that doesn’t sound like too much of a challenge! WCPC host, Sparky, promises to keep the traditions of past events alive while still amazing you with some great surprises. Not giving too much away, Sparky ensures us that there will be “dances, sports, entertainment, a beef or salmon barbeque, twoonie brunches, awards, love for some of you, romance for others, and whole lot of Fun! Fun! Fun!” For Leon, the freedom to be oneself is most important dur- ing this weekend. He believes that for many in the community, the mantra “we’re here we’re queer, we’re over it” sums it up. In other words, despite the fact that we’re gay, we also have our own unique personalities, and attendees should not fear just being themselves at this event. For him, a major suc-

But wakeup call of “you are my sunshine, my only sunshine,” at Camp Aurora 2008. there were a few more important factors that made this a life-changing experience. Camp Aurora is an adult-facilitated and peer-run summer Camp Aurora camp for LGBTT and allied youth. The Winnipeg, Manitoba August 25th to 29th, 2008 based camp, modeled after Edmonton’s Camp fYyrefl y, had its Manitoba, Canada fi rst successful run this summer. Throughout camp, our self- http://www.rainbowresourcecentre.org/CampAurora.htm decorated “warm fuzzy” (mail) boxes served as an icebreaker, a way to say what was on your mind and get to know each other. We could send each other positive feedback, kind words, even notes of secret admiration. It became the Facebook of Camp Aurora, and was the breeding ground for some of my most trea- sured friendships. An equally important activity was the “Post-secrets” project. Inspired by the popular Frank Warren books of the same title, campers could craft postcards of their secrets, to be posted throughout the lodge. It became a game in itself trying to hunt for newest secrets, some of which were amusing while others were very serious. That everyone was comfortable enough to post these secrets, even if they were anonymous, said a lot about the amount of trust and support we had for one another. The various workshops were also an invaluable part of the camp experience. Whether it was getting in touch with your “in- ner” belly dancer, artist, or wall climber, there was plenty to do and learn. Some of the workshops were intense and emotional, and others just for fun, but they were all very enlightening and all helped me get in touch with parts of myself I had never known before. Camp redefi ned who I am as both a person and gay youth. More importantly, it redefi ned my outlook on “gays.” It’s true that there is discrimination within our own community, and I was no exception. Before camp, I had observed a lifestyle of sex, drugs and techno, fi lled with plenty of gossip and drama in the “bar scene.” But at camp, without these crutches/infl uences, I

38 gaycalgary and edmonton magazine #57, July 2008 6. Dealing with Unaccepting Family – Families vary in their response to one’s coming out. Petrow and Steele recommend that if your family is not accepting, create your own extend- ed family and your own traditions. If you can’t live at home, stay with a friend, sibling, or relative. My advice is don’t come out to your family while you are under their authority (while a minor or otherwise needing their care) if you believe they will have a harsh and rejecting reaction to your disclosure. Disclosing who you are can wait until you are independent. 7. Dealing with Unwanted Advances – Petrow and Steele advocate being honest, and that does go a long way. If some- one you are not interested in asks you out or makes a sexual advance, simply say “no thanks” and carry on with the conver- sation. I remember running into a guy a few weeks following a date and he asked, “Why haven’t you called me?” I was caught off guard but I did manage to utter, “I’m sorry but I am not interested in you that way.” That seemed to satisfy him and he left me alone after that. You could also say something like, “I am not romantically interested in you,” or “I am not attracted to you.” We have all had that experience before and the honest approach is better than making up lame excuses. 8. Behaviour in Bath Houses and Sex Clubs – Petrow and Steele do not believe you ought to talk when making an ad- vance in a bathhouse or sex club. Introductions are unnec- essary. Instead, approach the guy you’re interested in and touch him. Likewise, if a guy touches you, move away if you are not interested. If he persists, grasp his hand and fi rmly move it away. If others try to join you and you don’t want that, move their hands away too. Sounds so simple – and it works. 9. Invitations to a Commitment Ceremony (including same- sex marriage) – Should you invite everyone in your family, even if some members are homophobic? Petrow and Steele say “no” – only invite those who can really honour the commit- ment you are making. Makes perfect sense really. The last thing you need at such a special moment are others who are secretly sabotaging your deepest commitments. Especially if are new in your queer identity, you might want to purchase either or both of the books listed below in the reference section. It is not easy to be socially appropriate, polite, honest, and fair at the same time, while also ensuring that your own rights are protected (being assertive). It is worth learning proper etiquette, however, as it will earn you respect from those who know you well and from those who don’t. You will also be demonstrating the familiar Golden Rule (treat oth- ers the way you want to be treated). A little respect goes a long way in life.
