別紙2 Regular Exhibition "History of Japanese Literature Based on Books" Materials List, Part I 名 称 名称ふりがな 解 説 I Literature in Jodai じょうだいのぶんがく (Ancient Times) While Japanese history often uses the term "kodai" to mean ancient times, the history of literature generally calls the times before the Heian period "jodai." Its beginning is uncertain, but its end is defined as the end of the 8th century. Politically, the state had progressed to unity and completion of its regime during this period. From the perspective of literature, this period was the time when Japanese people—who had not had characters for writing—first met kanji or Chinese characters and attempted various ways to express themselves using kanji. Literature in the period primarily when the capital was at Yamato before it was transferred to Heian-kyo in 794. While the categories range from myths to legends, songs, waka or Japanese poetry, Chinese poetry, Literature in Jodai じょうだいのぶんがく biographies, histories and topographies, there were not so many works as a whole. Every extant work containing ancient contents was actually compiled into a book in the Nara period (710–794). Some of those books were established against the background of the regime establishment of the state. Kojiki was established in 712. O no Yasumaro composed this book by writing down the ancient history inherited by Hieda no Are. Kojiki contains the history from the age of the gods to the reign of Empress Suiko (reign: 593–629). Nihon Shoki was established in 720 through a compilation carried out by Prince Myths and History しんわ・れきし Toneri. -

Keller Kimbrough Reading the Miraculous Powers of Japanese Poetry Spells, Truth Acts, and a Medieval Buddhist Poetics of the Supernatural The supernatural powers of Japanese poetry are widely documented in the lit- erature of Heian and medieval Japan. Twentieth-century scholars have tended to follow Orikuchi Shinobu in interpreting and discussing miraculous verses in terms of ancient (arguably pre-Buddhist and pre-historical) beliefs in koto- dama 言霊, “the magic spirit power of special words.” In this paper, I argue for the application of a more contemporaneous hermeneutical approach to the miraculous poem-stories of late-Heian and medieval Japan: thirteenth- century Japanese “dharani theory,” according to which Japanese poetry is capable of supernatural effects because, as the dharani of Japan, it contains “reason” or “truth” (kotowari) in a semantic superabundance. In the first sec- tion of this article I discuss “dharani theory” as it is articulated in a number of Kamakura- and Muromachi-period sources; in the second, I apply that the- ory to several Heian and medieval rainmaking poem-tales; and in the third, I argue for a possible connection between the magico-religious technology of Indian “Truth Acts” (saccakiriyā, satyakriyā), imported to Japan in various sutras and sutra commentaries, and some of the miraculous poems of the late- Heian and medieval periods. keywords: waka – dharani – kotodama – katoku setsuwa – rainmaking – Truth Act – saccakiriyā, satyakriyā R. Through the combined usage of these scripts into something sometimes referred to as interlinear glossing, it is possible for the writer to express a wide range of poetic styles in a way that is quite unique to the Japanese language. Ranging from metonymical relations between words and sentences, to synecdoche, word play and visual rhymes. This thesis reviews some of the more recent research that has been conducted surrounding the combining of these different scripts to form poetical nuances and functions in written text, to try and find out just what functions and nuances these provide for written text and dialogue. The usage of five distinct but often overlapping categories of interlinear gloss will also be examined. This is done through the use of a questionnaire, where native Japanese speakers have been asked about these five different styles of usage separately in order to gain more sociolinguistic data regarding what nuances, implications, societal implications, functions etc, that these provide. For me, the so-called “aha” moment is the main ingredient for making a meaningful haiku. People often comment that my photos and haiku create a feeling of nostalgia. An accomplished Japanese poet and friend living in Hokkaido, Noriko Nagaya, excitedly telephoned me one morning after reading my haiku book. Her insight was that my haiku visions were similar to the way I must see at the exact moment I take a photo. -

Abstract. This paper investigates Australian author Richard Flanagan’s novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, and attempts to clarify the reason why Flanagan chose this title, which is linked to the travel writings of the Japanese author Matsuo Basho, for his novel. The novel focuses on the central character’s prisoner of war experience on the Thai-Burma Death Railway during World War II, and depicts the POW camp as well as cruel Japanese behaviour and atrocities in a realistic way. The work seems to provide a postcolonial framework in the sense that there is a colonial and postcolonial relationship between the colonizer, and the colonized. However, in this novel, the colonizer is Eastern, and the colonized is Western, and this fact reverses postcolonial theory which postulates a structure in which the colonizer is usually considered as Western and the colonized, Eastern. Postcolonial theory, thus, cannot be applied in this novel, which attempts to fuse the two opposites, the Western view and the Eastern view, through the work of the Japanese poet. As a result, Flanagan, in writing The Narrow Road to the Deep North, goes beyond being a postcolonial writer to become a writer in a globalizing age. -

Rhyme patterns of Japanese short poetry such as HAIKU, SENRYU, SEDOKAs, and TANKAs are analyzed by a statistical approach. Here HAIKU and SENRYU are poems composed of only seventeen syllables, which can be segmented into five, seven, and five syllables. As rhyming both head and end rhymes are considered. Analyses of sampled works of typical poets show that for the end rhyme composers prefere the avoided rhyming, whereas for the head rhyme they compose poems according to the stochastic law. Subsequently the statistical method is applied to a work of SEDOKAs as well as to those of TANKAs being written with three lines. Evaluation of the khi-square statistics shows that for a certain work of TANKAs the feature being identical to that of HAIKU is seen. 1. Introduction Irrespective of languages, texts are categorized into proses and verses. Poems, in general, take the form of the latter. Conventional poetics has classified poems into a variety of forms such as a lyric, an epic, a prose, a long, and a short poem. One finds that in typical European poetry a sound on a site in a line is correlated to that on the same site in another line in an established form. Correlation among feet of lines is termed end rhyme in contrast to the head rhyme for the one among heads of lines (SAKAMOTO, 2002). -

6489 A paper panel painted in ink and colour on a gold ground with scenes from Ise Monogatari (the Tales of Ise) Japan Edo period 18th century Dimensions: H.17¾” x W.14½” (44.75 cm x 36.5 cm) This painting depicts two connected scenes from the 10th century literary classic, the Tales of Ise, the lower half illustrating Episode 23 and the upper half Episode 24. The ‘Tale of Ise' (Ise monogatari), 10th century is one of the most important texts of Japanese literature. It is a loose collection of medieval Japanese poems with brief prose introductions. This anonymous work is the oldest in the uta monogatari, or “poem tale,” genre. Although composed mostly of waka, a Japanese poetic form, the prose prefaces to these poems give the work a unique flavour, anticipating later developments in Japanese literature. Most of the poems deal with the amorous exploits of an unnamed lover, who is traditionally, identified as Ariwara no Narihira (825-80), one of the six “saints” of Japanese poetry. Ever since the 11th century, when the ‘Tales of Ise' came to be seen as a kind of cultural icon, generations of scholars and writers have been puzzling over the numerous problems the text poses. While some may read the episodes as semi-biographical account of the romantic pursuits of Ariwara no Nahira; others have hailed the text as expressions of ‘true Japanese spirit'. There are 209 poems comprising the 125 sections of the work, and each section is a clever and elegant meditation on love outside of marriage.
