I examine four poet- painters associated with the Japanese literati tradition in the Edo (1603-1867) and Meiji (1867- 1912) periods: Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916). Each artist fashions a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry. I argue that each artist’s thoughts and feelings emerge in the tensions generated in the process of blending forms, genres, and the ideas (aesthetic, philosophical, social, cultural, and historical) that they carry with them. -

Tea Time: Haiku and Basho post written by Wende Haiku Haiku is a form of poetry that began in Japan around the 17th century. Classic Haiku poem always has seventeen syllables in 3 or 4 lines. The first and last lines have five syllables each, and the middle line(s) has seven syllables. Haiku poems usually don’t rhyme, and are almost always about nature and seasons of the year. Haiku is written in the present tense, and does not have to follow punctuation and capitalization rules. Because the poet writing haiku is trying to paint an image in the mind of the reader, each word chosen needs to be strong and meaningful. Basho Matsuo Kinsaku, considered the father of haiku, was born in Japan around 1644. He was one of six children in a family of samurai. As a child, he was a servant to Tōdō Yoshitada, who shared with him a love for haikai no renga, a kind of chain haiku that preceded the stand alone verses mentioned above. A poem was begun by Todo with a verse in the 5-7-5 format, called a hokku. Then Matsuo would follow that verse with a 7-7 format. This would go back and forth to create the collaborative poem. When Todo died in 1666, Matsuo’s feudal service ended and he began to spend much of his life wandering about Japan. Thus he is known as a traveler as well as a poet, the author of some of the most beautiful travel diaries ever written in Japanese. In 1680, Matsuo settled down in a small cottage. -

Shiki 1 In the years between Issa’s death and Shiki’s birth, enormous change had wracked Japan politically, socially and culturally. At mid-19th century, after more than 200 years of isolation, Japan was torn by economic problems and beleaguered from without by foreigners seeking to open Japan to trade with the West. Her farmers and samurai were financially depleted, her merchants could not function without access to markets. Dissolute factions within the country jockeyed for dominance over the crumbling Tokugawa Shogunate to the extent that some Japanese called for restoration of the Emperor. The appearance of the Black Ships of Russia, England and America heightened the anxiety of an already troubled nation. Change was inevitable and necessary for the survival of Japan. With the arrival of Commodore Perry in Edo Bay in 1853, Japan was eventually forced into the modern world. It did not take long for the Japanese to recognize their defenselessness in the face of the military and technological superiority of the West. With dispatch, they sent emissaries abroad to obtain firsthand knowledge of their enemy, the “barbarians.” The result: the Japanese people were awash in a flood of ideas that conflicted with their ancient traditions. On September 17, 1867 in this time of ferment and cross-cultural exchange, Masaoka Tsunenori was born in Matusuyama on the island of Shikoku. (Later in his life, as was customary among Japanese poets, he adopted the name Shiki.) His father, Masaoka Hayata, was a samurai of lower rank who died of alcoholism. -

In addition, the haiku also requires the existence of a season word. Kigo is an important factor in the haiku sentence, it is like "Poetry eye" in the poem, which is the key to understanding haiku. The article analyzes the rules for recording poems on kaishi sheets of paper by poets during or for the poetic events. The main source of the study is the recording of a poetic collection Shokukokinshū kyōen waka (1266) composed of poems read during a banquet in honor of the completion of the work on the imperial anthology Shokukokinshū. The Gunshō Ruijū publication was used as a source for the investigation, as this publication preserves the principles of recording poems on kaishi sheets. The record of Shokukokinshū kyōen waka is analyzed in context of the karon texts of the time – provisions regarding the recording of poems on sheets of kaishi by Fujiwara no Kiyosuke, Juntoku-in, Fujiwara no Teika.
