President Ronald Reagan' INTRODUCTION: Tm BIG PAYBACK In recent months, claims for reparations for slavery have gained new popular- ity amongst black intellectuals and trial lawyers and have been given additional momentum by the publication of Randall Robinson's controversial and thought- provoking book, The Debt: What America Owes to Blacks.2 In The Debt, Robinson makes a serious and persuasive case for the payment of reparations by the United States government to African-Americans for both the injustices done to their ancestors during slavery and the effect of those wrongs on the current * Associate Professor of Law, The John Marshall Law School. -

Slavery in the United States - Wikipedia Page 1 of 25 Slavery in the United States Slavery in the United States was the legal institution of human chattel enslavement, primarily of Africans and African Americans, that existed in the United States of America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Slavery had been practiced by Americans under British rule from early colonial days, and was legal in all Thirteen Colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It lasted until the end of the American Civil War. By the time of the American Revolution (1775–1783), the status of slave had been institutionalized as a racial caste associated with African ancestry.[1] When the United States Constitution was ratified (1789), a relatively small number of free people of color were among the voting citizens (male property owners).[2] During and immediately following the Revolutionary War, abolitionist laws were passed in most Northern states and a movement developed to abolish slavery. Most of these states had a higher proportion of free labor than in the South and economies based on different industries. They abolished slavery by the end of the 18th century, some with gradual systems that kept adults as slaves for two decades. However, the rapid expansion of the cotton industry in the Deep South after the invention of the cotton gin greatly increased demand for slave labor, and the An animation showing when United States territories and states Southern states continued as slave societies. Allusion, Volume 06 No 01 February 2017, 31-38 Racial Oppression against African American Slaves in Harriette Gillem Robinet’s Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule Ovriza Dien Kartika Titien Diah Soelistyarini English Department, Universitas Airlangga Abstract Children’s literature does not only play an important role in educating young readers but also raising racial awareness. A novel entitled Forty Acres and Maybe a Mule by Harriette Gillem Robinet raises an issue of racial oppression experienced by African American characters. Portrayed as a young boy growing up in slavery era and Reconstruction, Pascal, along with other black characters in the novel had to deal with racial oppression from the white. Thus, this study aimed at examining how racial oppression was presented in the novel by applying African American Criticism. Specifically, the six features of Feagin’s Systemic Racism were applied in order to explain how systemic racism worked and relateed to white economic domination in the novel. This study showed how Pascal and other black characters experienced many kinds of racial oppression that led to stereotype, prejudice, and marginalization that further reinforced the roles of the white as powerful oppressor and the black as the oppressed. Keywords: African American, racial oppression, racism, slavery, systemic racism 1. Introduction African Americans cannot be separated from the history of slavery in America. As slaves, they received terrible treatments and had to struggle for freedom. For more than two centuries, they had been enslaved in order to produce millions of white’s wealth (Feagin 2006, xi). The exploitation of African Americans as slaves was based on the ideology that was very harmful for black people. -

I argue that the defining characteristic of coerced labour, the threat of violence to prevent voluntary quits from a job, can be helpfully understood by contrasting it with free labour markets that are riven with imperfect competition and agency problems. American slavery looks closer to the textbook competitive model of labour markets than does free labour. 1. Introduction The second chapter of ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ provides an illuminating view of the labour market for enslaved Americans. George, enslaved and hired out to a manufacturing job where he exercises his talents and innovativeness, is removed from the job at the whim of his owner, despite the manufacturer’s willingness to bid a higher rate for George’s ser- vices. -

Morgan Whereas some doubts have arisen whether children got by any Englishman upon a negro woman shall be slave or free, Be it therefore enacted and declared by this present grand assembly, that all children borne in this country shall be held bond or free only according to the condition of the mother—Partus Sequitur Ventrem. And that if any Christian shall commit fornication with a negro man or woman, hee or shee soe offending shall pay double the fines imposed by the former act. —Laws of Virginia, 1662 Act XII; Latin added by William Henig, The Statutes at Large, 1819 1 Atlantic slavery rested upon a notion of heritability. It thus relied on a reproductive logic that was inseparable from the explanatory power of race. As a result, women and their experiences of enslavement shed critical light on what it meant to be enslaved or free in the early modern Atlantic world. Regardless of the rate of reproduction among the enslaved—which remained low in all early American slave societies—the ideological solidity of those slave societies needed reproducing women. Building a system of racial slavery on the notion of heritability did not require the presence of natural population growth among the enslaved, but it did require a clear understanding that enslaved women gave birth to enslaved children. Resituating herita- bility was key in the practice of an enslavement that systematically alienated the enslaved from their kin and their lineage. Enslaved people had to be understood as dispossessed, outside of the normal networks of family and community, to justify the practice of mass enslavement.
