Mr Phillip Andrew Adams AO The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon Phillip Adams by the Chancellor the Hon Justice Kim Santow at the Faculty of Arts graduation ceremony at 4.00pm on 6 May 2005. Citation Chancellor, I have the honour to present Phillip Andrew Adams, AO for admission to the degree of Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). Phillip Adams is arguably Australia’s number one public intellectual. He has made pivotal contributions to Australia’s identity across film, broadcasting and print media. Phillip Adams’ creative vision paved the way to a vibrant national film industry. Helping to create the Australia Council, Phillip established Australia’s National Film School. He established the South Australian Film Corporation, which became the model for subsequent film commissions in other states. As Chair of the Australian Film Commission, Phillip signed Australia’s first co-production agreements with France and the United Kingdom and persuaded then Treasurer Paul Keating to establish the Australian Film Finance Corporation. Phillip is recognised in his own right for his films and has, amongst many AFI awards, won two ‘Best Films’. Phillip devised the immensely successful Life, Be In It campaign which effected a paradigm shift in Australian society. His campaign for the United Nations’ International Year of the Disabled Person won the Golden Lion at the Cannes Festival in 1982. As a public commentator and broadcaster, Phillip Adams is one of the major facilitators of debate in this country. In this role, he continues to influence the thinking, the welfare and culture of our society. -

I quickly want to thank Harold for introducing me today. Harold barely knew me when, in November 2001, he fl ew from Melbourne to Sydney to attend my fi rst ever festival launch in Customs House down at Sydney’s Circular Quay. His reason was simple - he loves the arts, I was a fairly new kid on the festival block, and he wanted to show his support. And that support has continues to this day, unabated. I appreciate it tremendously, and it’s a privilege to fi nally share a stage with him, in what is now, mutually, our hometown. So thank you Harold. These confessions of an arts gatekeeper which I’m going to share this morning are personal, frequently intuitive, born of 25 years of observation and experience in the arts, but also not absolutes – all are debatable, but not one, I think, is disprovable. An arts gatekeeper is really a kind of artistic ‘door bitch’, someone charged with the responsibility of deciding when the ‘velvet rope’ is lifted, and which art will, and will not, be seen by the public of Australia. And while the metaphor of the ‘velvet rope’ makes light of it here, the role is actually riven with anxiety and stress – so important do I think the responsibility is, and so potentially charged with hubris. Gatekeepers come in many guises – festival directors, artistic directors of theatre and dance companies, museum and gallery curators, music directors of opera houses and orchestras, arts centre programmers, book publishers and record producers. -

Gender Matters Women in the Australian Screen Industry Gender Matters – Women in the Australian Screen Industry Context Who is telling Australian stories? And whose stories are being told? Are women adequately represented in key creative roles and positions of influence in the Australian screen industry? If not, why not, and what can we do about it? While this paper will look at women in the screen industry, Screen Australia recognises that other groups may also be under-represented in front of and behind the camera. In conjunction with the national broadcasters, it is working on a new study on cultural diversity in TV drama, which it expects to release in 2016. Introduction Are women properly represented? In May this year, Screen Australia updated statistics on key screen credits by gender to coincide with the Women in Film issue of Lumina, which injected new energy into debates on this issue due to continued poor levels of female representation (see page 5). Screen Australia’s analysis of applications and funding decisions over the past two years has revealed that the proportion of women attached in key roles to all applications has been matched by the proportion of women attached to successful applications. In the context of feature film production investment, 47 per cent of producers attached to both applications and funded projects were female. In feature development, a strong bias towards women has been demonstrated across all creative roles. Notably, 47 per cent of producers attached to applications were female, compared to 59 per cent of producers for funded projects. In the context of the writer, 32 per cent of applicant writers were female and 40 per cent of funded writers. -
