I will be arguing for the relevance to Afro-American studies of these broader disciplinary changes, which have fundamentally reoriented scholarship on arts that, for the most part, fall outside of what Joseph Alsop (1982) has dubbed "The Great Tradi- tions." Toward that end, I begin with a general assessment of these theoretical shifts (Part 1: Anthropology and Art History Shake Hands) before moving into an exploration of their impact on Afro-American studies (Part 2: Mapping the African-American Artworld). CHAPTER 4 Early Yachts IN THE R.V.Y.C. FROM 1903 TO ABOUT 1933 The following list of the first sail yachts in the Club cannot be said to be complete, nevertheless it provides a record of the better known vessels and was compiled from newspaper files of The Province, News-Advertiser, The World and The Sun during the first three decades of the Club activities. Vancouver newspapers gave very complete coverage of sailing events in that period when yacht racing commanded wide public interest. ABEGWEIT—32 ft. aux. Columbia River centerboard cruising sloop built at Steveston in 1912 for H. C. Shaw, who joined the Club in 1911. ADANAC-18 ft. sloop designed and built by Horace Stone in 1910. ADDIE—27 ft. open catboat sloop built in 1902 for Bert Austin at Vancouver Shipyard by William Watt, the first yacht constructed at the yard. Addie was in the original R.V.Y.C. fleet. ADELPIII—44 ft. schooner designed by E. B. Schock for Thicke brothers. Built 1912, sailed by the Thicke brothers till 1919 when sold to Bert Austin, who sold it in 1922 to Seattle. AILSA 1-28.5 ft. D class aux. yawl, Mower design. Built 1907 by Bob Granger, originally named Ta-Meri. Subsequent owners included Ron Maitland, Tom Ramsay, Alan Leckie, Bill Ball and N. S. McDonald. AILSA II—22.5 ft. D class aux. yawl built 1911 by Bob Granger. Owners included J. H. Willard and Joe Wilkinson. What drew my attention most were the rare fruit collected and their similarity to the fossil specimens of Sacoglottis cipaconensis presented to me some years earlier in Bogota by the geologist J. Royo G6mez. These fossils proved to belong to the genus Vantanea rather than to Sacoglottis. Notwithstanding the exceptionally good work of Urban in the "Flora Brasiliensis," the existing literature lacked information on the structure of the fruit, information indispensable to a more complete taxonomic understanding of the family. In view of the collections made since Martins' gigantic work on neo- tropical botany, some revision of the group seemed necessary. In 1951, while in Chicago, I initiated this revision with the cooperation of T. Just, who intended to prepare a section on paleobotany in the planned synopsis; however, the project was discontinued. In 1957, with the primary purpose of writing the Humiriaceae for the "Flora of Colombia," I started anew with a taxonomic revision of the entire family; the results of this study are summarized in the present publication. -

Faith, Hope & Opportunity It gave people like me the chance to be successful. It provided me and my brother with an incredible environment of security. Not every school provides that.” – Justice Sonia Sotomayor of the U.S. Supreme Court Dear Friends, 2020 marks Vision of Hope’s 25th anniversary, but this has not been the lead story for much of the year. Our attention has focused on the impact of a global pandemic, closure of school campuses, distance learning, and the health of our families and friends. Yet in the face of these challenges, we are even more aware of what makes Vision of Hope such a special organization – faith, hope, and opportunity. In 1995, the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose recognized the urgency surrounding elementary Catholic schools serving low-income communities. Guided by faith, they gave birth to a vision that would change the trajectory of Lori Hawkins eight of their poorest elementary schools. Since then, it has been the faith of our Vision of Hope Board President Dominican Sisters and the faith of you, our friends, which has sustained our schools and students for a quarter of a century! Hope has come to us in the faces and stories of our students, for they have always been our “Vision of Hope.” Their smiles, laughter, gratitude, and resilience instill in us the promise of hope even when surrounded by adversity. -

Case 11 (2011-12): A three-masted topsail schooner, Kathleen and May Expert adviser’s statement Reviewing Committee Secretary’s note: Please note that any illustrations referred to have not been reproduced on the Arts Council England Website EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Kathleen & May is a three-masted topsail schooner built largely in wood with a variety of metal fastenings and fixtures, and is fully rigged with textile sails set from wooden spars. She was built by Ferguson & Baird at Connah’s Quay, Nr Chester, North Wales and launched in 1900 measuring 98’ 4” in length by 23’ 2” in the beam and a tonnage of 136 gross. The Kathleen & May is currently in full sailing condition. 2. Context Provenance 1900: Built for Captain Coppack and originally named Lizzie May 1908: Bought by M J Fleming of Youghal, County Cork, and renamed Kathleen and May. 1931: Bought by Captain T Jewell of Appledore, Devon. Rig reduced and converted to a motor schooner. 1961: Sold out of trade. 1970: Acquired by the Maritime Trust from Captain Davis 1998: Purchased by the current owner. Waverley criteria The Kathleen & May meets all three of the Waverley criteria in that; 1. Although now in serious decline, the coal industry was fundamental in shaping the development of modern Wales, particularly in the south. For a brief period of time in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was arguably also Britain’s greatest single export and Welsh ‘steam coal’ powered the industrial and transport revolutions taking place across the world. The coal industry bestrode Wales like a behemoth. Most of the coal was exported and therefore the coal trade was by necessity largely a maritime trade. Both South and North Wales had separate coal industries. The coalfields of North Wales were in the north-east. The South Wales coalfield extended across a wide area, from Abersychan in the east to St Bride’s Bay in the west. -
