There are still dues on slate of £150 which he has not been able to get in yet. 3. 1881 Jan. 31 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 Dec. 1880. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Duesfor the quarter ending 31 March 1881. £100 dues on slates still nncollected. Expenditure will be greater this month on account of income tax payments etc., but nett produce will exceed last March quarter. They have commenced putting up the fenders on the pier. Slate trade is not very brisk. 6. 1881 July 30 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port madoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he has paid £600 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 June 1881. Morris, Portmadoc to [F.W. A. Roche, esq. ], Informing him that he has paid to his credit at the National and Provincial Bank : £250 on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 March. Balance of £100 yet to come from several of the slate proprietors. Slate trade is good this month. German merchants are sending In extensive orders fearing that Bismark will put duty on slates imported Into the country. 8. 1882 July 23 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £650 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 June 1882. Shipment of slates continues good but not as good as June quarter. 9. 1882 Oct. 27 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Port Madoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £550 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30th Sept.. Great slacking In the slate trade; quantity of shipments being nearly 4000 less compared with the corresponding quarter last year. £80 of dues of slates yet to come in; expen diture less; £100 more due to Mr. Roche when the account is settled in November. 10. 1883 Feb. 14 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc, stating that he has paid £330.10s. 3d. to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 Dec. 1882, also £45 rent of Embankment Gate due 12 Feb. 1883. He is afraid that he willbse money on the [tolls] and so asks whether he could have the gate for £160 next year. The Bala-Trawsfynydd Railway has much reduced the number of carts passing through. The shipment of slates is pro gressing for the Hamburg and Baltic trade which is their principal stronghold as no railways can touch that trade. The bad weather has caused further damage to the ballast bankwhich needs to be repaired. 11. 1883 June 5 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, 24 Lombard St., Portmadoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, sending him a plan of the proposed new hay house which he has asked him to erect at Penamser on the portion of land below the Cricoieth Road. The estimated value of the buildings Is £70. 12. 1883 Nov. 5 COPY LETTER: William E. Morris, Portmadoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., informing him that he has paid £500 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of the quarter ending 30 Sept.. Complains that the shipment of slates has greatly fallen off in comparison to what it was in 1872, nearly 5,000 less, so the dues on vessels have decreased. The goods per the Rebecca and other vessels have kept up well. The coal trade is also decreasing on account of the railway communication to Festinlog having two lines against one. States that business 'is now very dull, scarcely any slates being shipped'. Foreign trade fell off earlier than in previous years also. 13. 1884 May 12 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £450 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 March 1884. Imports were less because of railway competition. Dues on slates were more by £20. Trade is slacker due to the fall off in foreign orders. 14. 1884 Nov. 10 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, T^rtmadoo to IF.W.A.] Roche, stating that he has paid £590 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 Sept. 1884. Imports are less due to the steam mill being under repairfor the last four months and customers having their flour by rail. Export of slate has been very good. 15. 1885 Feb. 4 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £300 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues. Mr. Roberts, Ynys towyn has sent him the billsfor repairing the sluice gate, which amount to nearly £37. Expenses are heavier than in the summer quarter because of all the tradesmen^ bills, etc. Slate shipments are improved: quarter^ dues will be increased by about £100. 16. 1885 May 19 COPY LETTER: [Wm. E. Morris], Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has paid £500 to his credit on account of Harbour Dues ending 31 March 1885.
