1. 1872 June 1 LETTER: Joseph Ho 11, Portmadoc to W.E. Morris enclosing the accounts which have been returned by Mr. Breese and asking him to have them signed and returned to Mr. Jones in time for tomorrow's post.

2. 1880 Oct. 26 COPY LETTER: William E. Morris, Portmadoc to F. Roche, ejq., stating that he has paid to his credit the sum of £600 on account of harbour dues for the quarter ending 30 Sept.. There are still dues on slate of £150 which he has not been able to get in yet.

3. 1881 Jan. 31 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 Dec. 1880. Less timber has been imported; shipment of slate remains stable and more by rail. Nett produce will be about £10 less. Good prospect for the foreign slate trade.

4. 1881 April 23 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Duesfor the quarter ending 31 March 1881. £100 dues on slates still nncollected. Expenditure will be greater this month on account of income tax payments etc., but nett produce will exceed last March quarter. They have commenced putting up the fenders on the pier. Slate trade is not very brisk. 6. 1881 July 30 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port­ madoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he has paid £600 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 June 1881. Expenditure is up on account of the fenders etc., but receipts are better by £20. £60 dues on slates unpaid. He will send a statement of the quarters receipt and expenditure.

6. 1881 Aug. 9 COPY LETTER: William E. Morris, Portmadoc to F. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, enclosing an or der which he has received from the Trinity Board re inspecting the bar buoys on 15th August.

7. 1882 April 28 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Portmadoc to [F.W. A. Roche, esq. ], Informing him that he has paid to his credit at the National and Provincial Bank : £250 on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 March. Balance of £100 yet to come from several of the slate proprietors. Slate trade is good this month. German merchants are sending In extensive orders fearing that Bismark will put duty on slates imported Into the country.

8. 1882 July 23 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £650 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 June 1882. Shipment of slates continues good but not as good as June quarter.

9. 1882 Oct. 27 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Port Madoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £550 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30th Sept.. Great slacking In the slate trade; quantity of shipments being nearly 4000 less compared with the corresponding quarter last year. £80 of dues of slates yet to come in; expen­ diture less; £100 more due to Mr. Roche when the account is settled in November. 10. 1883 Feb. 14 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc, stating that he has paid £330.10s. 3d. to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 Dec. 1882, also £45 rent of Embankment Gate due 12 Feb. 1883. He is afraid that he willbse money on the [tolls] and so asks whether he could have the gate for £160 next year. The Bala- Railway has much reduced the number of carts passing through. The shipment of slates is pro­ gressing for the Hamburg and Baltic trade which is their principal stronghold as no railways can touch that trade. The bad weather has caused further damage to the ballast bankwhich needs to be repaired.

11. 1883 June 5 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, 24 Lombard St., Portmadoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, sending him a plan of the proposed new hay house which he has asked him to erect at Penamser on the portion of land below the Cricoieth Road. The estimated value of the buildings Is £70.

12. 1883 Nov. 5 COPY LETTER: William E. Morris, Portmadoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., informing him that he has paid £500 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of the quarter ending 30 Sept.. Complains that the shipment of slates has greatly fallen off in comparison to what it was in 1872, nearly 5,000 less, so the dues on vessels have decreased. The goods per the Rebecca and other vessels have kept up well. The coal trade is also decreasing on account of the railway communication to Festinlog having two lines against one. States that business 'is now very dull, scarcely any slates being shipped'. . Foreign trade fell off earlier than in previous years also. 13. 1884 May 12 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £450 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 March 1884. Imports were less because of railway competition. Dues on slates were more by £20. Trade is slacker due to the fall off in foreign orders.

14. 1884 Nov. 10 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, T^rtmadoo to IF.W.A.] Roche, stating that he has paid £590 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 Sept. 1884. Imports are less due to the steam mill being under repairfor the last four months and customers having their flour by rail. Export of slate has been very good.

15. 1885 Feb. 4 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W.A. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £300 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues. Mr. Roberts, Ynys­ towyn has sent him the billsfor repairing the sluice gate, which amount to nearly £37. Expenses are heavier than in the summer quarter because of all the tradesmen^ bills, etc. Slate shipments are improved: quarter^ dues will be increased by about £100.

16. 1885 May 19 COPY LETTER: [Wm. E. Morris], Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has paid £500 to his credit on account of Harbour Dues ending 31 March 1885. He encloses a statement of Harbour Dues received from 1879. Details re expenditure over the last six years-.

17. 1885 June 8 LETTER: F. Roche, , Talgarth, Breconshire to Mr. W.E. Morris, asking himfor another copy of the Receipts and Expenditure of the harbour during the last 17. (cont. 'd) ... few years. Also a statement of receipts only and a list of present charges on goods and *in and out' dues with maximum charges only.

18. 1885 Aug. 17 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoo to F. Roche, esq., Tregunter. Talgarth. Brecon, stating that he has paid £450 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Duesfor the quarter ending June. The shipment of slates is 6358 tons less than the corresponding quarter. The Cwmorthin Co. owe nearly £60.

19. 1885 Oct. 29 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc, to F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he has paid £197.ls.7d.to his credit at the National Provincial Bank, being the balance of Harbour Duesfor the quarters ending 31 March and 30 June. He also encloses the account for those quarters. The Cwmorthin Company sent a cheque on Tuesday. There will be a considerable fall off from the corresponding quarter of 1884, shipments of slates being less by about 9000.

20. 1886 Feb. 25 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madocto[F.W.A. ] Roche, stating that he is preparing the December quarter's account, and will be paying the amount due to his credit.

21. 1886 June3 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madocto [F.W.A.J. Roche, stating that he has paid £300 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Duesfor the quarter ending 30 March. Expenses have been heavy owing to the Income and Property Tax. They have commenced cleaning the' harbour. 22. 1886 Aug. 5 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W.A, Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on aco unt of Harbour Dues ending 30 June. They have not had a single cargo of timber during the quarter. Shipment of slates continuing fair.

23. 1886 Nov. 26 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, stating that he has paid £350 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 Sept.. Some of the shippers have not yet paid their dues which accounts for the delay. There should be a balance of about £100. Shipments of slates have been nearly up to average of the corresponding quarter.

24. 1887 Jan. 29 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Port Madoc to F.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has received his letter of 28th. Total receipts for Harbour Dues from vessels during quarter ending 31 Dec. are £137, but the expenditure for mis quarter will exceed that sum. The slate proprietors are very backward in paying. He will pay between £200 and £250 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank next week, and prepare the quarterly account.

COPY LETTER (2 Feb. 1887): the same to the same, stating that he has paid £200 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues . Expenditure in cleaning the harbour has been much heavier than usual.

25. 1888 Jan. 5 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Poxtmadocto F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has paid £146. Is.Id. to his credit at the National Provincial Bank being the balance due on the dues for the quarter ending 30th June. He also encloses an account. He has not closed as there are three slate quarries which have not yet paid. 25. (cont. *d) ... He has written to them stating that legal proceedings will be taken unless the account is paid forthwith. Details of sums owing by the various quarry companies: Votty and Bowydd, Cwmmorthin and Maenofferyn.

26. 1888 Feb. 9 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.W. Roche, esq., stating that he has paid £200 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 Dec. 1887.

27. 1888 April 18 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris. Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that they have no lights on their bar buoys except occasionally when vessels proceed or come over the bar to save the Spring'. The buoyage dues are inoiuded in the tonnage on vessels. He has delivered bills to the three companies. He returns the Board of Trade notice.

28. 1888 May 9 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Tulgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £44.6s. 2d. to his credit at the National Provincial Bank being dues on coal and slates from the Maenofferen Company, also £200 on account of *he Harbour Dues received for , the March quarter. Shipments are less than the corresponding quarter last year.

29. 1888 May 27 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon stating that he has paid £100 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues. Mr. Percival has paid the dues on slates for the last three quarters. Mr. Casson will be writing about using the harbour barge to clear his wharf; the Cwmmorthin Company have had the use of it. They have not yet paid the dues, but are expected to in the next few days.

mmm 30. 1888 July 30 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office. Port Madoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon stating that he had paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues. Several of the slate proprietors have not paid yet.

31. 1888 Sept. 18 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office. Portmadoc to E.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he is preparing the quarter 's account which will be sent within the week. The Cwmorthin Company still owe one year's dues, £ 69.16s. 5d.. He has failed to see Mr. Casson, but he has written to them about the debt.

32. 1888 Sept. 27 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to Mr. Roche, stating that he is enclosing the account for the quarter ending 31 March, and has paid £199.14s. 6d. to his credit at the National Pro­ vincial Bank. The quarter's receipts of £513.5s. 5d. are a few pounds less than the corresponding quarter of 1887; shipments of slate not as much. Has kept the balance due from the Votty and Bowydd and the Maenofferyn Co. separately. The Cwmmorthin owes £49.5s. lid.. Has received a cheque from Mr. Casson for the quarter ending 30 June 1888 which leaves a balance of £49.5s. lid. Mr. Casson is in correspondence with the liquidator for the amount.

33. 1888 Oct. 23 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Collector of Dues, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to Mr. F.W.A. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues. Shipments of slates for the quarter ending 30 Sept. are very close upon last year's. Cwmorthin Co. have not paid the £67.8s. 8d. and other slate proprietors have not yet paid their dues. 34. 1889 Jan. 12 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office. Port Madoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £226.18s^2d. to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 Sept. last. The Cwmmorthin Co. still have not paid their dues. Mr. Casson has been too busy with the County Council elections to negociate with them. Receipts are less than the corresponding quarter of the previous year: vessels are scarce and the weather unfavourable.

35. 1889 Feb. 26 COPY LETTER: Wm.E. Morris, Collector of Dues, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.Bromwich, esq., Cwmmorthin Wharf, Port Madoc, stating that he has been instructed by Mr. Roche to inform him that unless the dues on slates shipped by the Cwmmorthin Company are paid forthwith, he must hence forth demand and receive them before any vessel is allowed to leave the port. Details re sums due, total £73.6s.7d.

36. 1889 March 1 LETTER: Ernest Crewdson, liquidator of the Cwmorthin Co. Ltd., Jones, Crewdson & . Youatt, 5 Norfolk Street, to Mr. Roche, c/o Mr. W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc enclosing the sum of £13. Us. 2d. in payment of dues for Aug. Sept. and Dec. 1888 with a deduction for dues paid in error Sept. 26 1888 and May 24 1888.

37. 1889 March 2 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Collector of Dues, Portmadoc to Ernest Crewdson, esq., 5 Norfolk St., Manchester returning his cheque which is unaccept­ able. He cannot consent to such a reduction being made. Mr. Roche's solicitors were assured when they were pressed by Mr. Bromwich to give a consent to the underletting of a portion of the wharf that Mr. Roche would not be prejudiced by giving same. Since the Company does not act upon that assurance Mr. Roche will adhere to his strict right, and in future, all harbour dues must be paid before the vessels are cleared. Any other arrangement must be made with Mr. Roche's solicitors, Messrs. Breese, Jones and Casson. 38. 1889 March 8 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has paid £174s. Os. 8d. to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 Dec, 1888* The Cwmorthln Company paid him this morning the amount due from them for the Sept. and Dec. quarters. Expenditure is heavier in the December quarter than the others.

39. 1889 March 30 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, stating that the amount due from the Cwmorthin Company for Harbour Dues is £49.5s. lid. which amount he has deducted from the quarters concerned.

40. 1889 May 10 LETTER: Ernest Crewdson, liquidator of the Cwmorthin Slate Co, Ltd., Jones, Crewdson & Youatt, 5, Norfolk St., Manchester to Mr. Roche, Portmadoc Harbour Office, Portmadoc, enclosing cheque for £8.11s. 6d. in payment of harbour dues account for the quarter ending March 1889.

41. 1889 July3 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, 24 Lombard St., Port­ madocto F.W.A. Roche, requesting him to advise Mr. Roberts to have the lime kiln repaired at once. He cannot get any good lime from it and is loosing customers.

COPY LETTER (10 July 1889): the same to the same stating that he has paid £168. 19.2d. balance of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 31 March to his credit at the National Provincial Bank. This quarter promises to be very good as shipments of slates are extensive. He asks him again to order his agent Mr. Roberts to have the lime kiln put in order at once. 42. 1889 Aug. 14 COPY LETTER: Win. £. Morris, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon stating that he has paid £400 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Duesfor the quarter ending 30 June. They have expended above £30 in clearing land, banks etc. during the quarter as per Mr. Roche*s order to Harbour Master. He hopes Mr. Roche will be well supported at the Brecon ,

43. 1889 Oct. 17 LETTER: Ernest Crewdson, liquidator of the Cwmorthin Slate Company, Jones, Crewdson & Youatt, 5 Norfolk St., Manchester to Mr. W.E. Morris, Portmadoc enclosing the New Welsh Slate Company^ cheque for £2.10s. in settlement of accountfor carriage.

44. 1889 Nov. 9 LETTER: R. Roche, Tregunter, Talgarth to Mr. W.E. Morris, Portmadoc stating that he has not yet received notice from the bank of his having paid in harbour duesforth e quarter ending Sept.. He asks him to do so without further delay.

COPY LETTER (LI Nov. 1889) in reply to above, stating that he has this day paid £400 to his credit at the Nat­ ional Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Duesfor the quarter ending 30 Sept.. Several slate proprietors have not paid their dues. Shipmentsforthi s quarter are' not as good as the corresponding quarter.

45. 1890 April 29 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port­ madoc to F.W. Roche, Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £300 to his credit at the Nat­ ional Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 March last. Shipment s of slates are not as good as the corresponding quarter last year. 46. 1890 Oct. 16 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, Tregunter stating that he has paid £500 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank partly on account of harbour dues £or the quarters ending 30 June and 30 Sept.

COPY LETTER (12 Feb. 1890)t W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to Mr. Roche, stating that he has paid £85.12s. 5d. balance of the quarter ending 30 Sept. and £200 on account of quarter ending 30 Dec. 1889 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank. The slate proprietors are very slow in paying their dues.

47. 1891 Jan. 6 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, Brecon, stating that he has paid £250 to his credit on account of Harbour Dues. Due to the death of Mr. John Roberts, Steam Mills, £40 of dues on wheat etc. will be uncol­ lected. He trusts that the mill will be let shortly to a company which will extend the business.

48. 1891 May 22 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port­ madoc to F.W. Roches, esq., Tregunter, Talgarth, Brecon, stating that he has paid £150 to his credit at the National Provincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues £or the quarter ending March. The fact that the steam mill is not working will mean a reduction from corresponding quarter of 1890. Still £40-£50 dues to collect.

49. 1891 Nov. 3 COPY LETTER: Wm. E. Morris, Harbour Office, Port Madoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that he has paid £300 to his credit at the National Pro­ vincial Bank on account of Harbour Dues for the quarter ending 30 Sept.. Slate trade continues fair, The farmers have every reason to complain because of the low prices of cattle. 50. 1891 Nov. 6 COPY LETTER: W.E. Morris, Harbour Office, Portmadoc to F.W. Roche, esq., Tregunter, stating that it is the Maenofferen Company which has not paid it's dues, together with a few small quarries. Goods per Rebecca have not bean collected.

As regards the account fir harbour dues per the Aeron Belle, they had previously received a statement from the Harbour Office at Port Madoc and replied that the harbour dues were payable by the vessel. Mr. Hum­ phries is certainly not liable for these charges and he advises him to write to the Harbour Authority to this effect.

His argument that the agents of the Rebecca did not advise her captain in time for Monday evening'a tide is beside the point. It was the duty of the Harbour Master to have moved her away and allowed the Tecwyn in.

Asks for information as to cases in which a lien upon a sunken vessel has been proved to be insufficient to secure the dock and habour authorities full compensation for the expenses of raising and removing it.

12. The Frau Minna Peterson unloading a cargo of potatoes at Porthmadog in 1878. Built by Si mon Jones. 1878. she was named after the wife of a German merchant from whom the owner hoped to obtain charters. Sold to a West Country owner but cap­ tured by the German Navy in the first World War and escorted to Emden. Repossessed after the war she was handed back to the same owner and renamed, after his mother, as the Jane Banks. The Jane Banks was sold again in 1939 to an Estonian shipowner for £400 but was reported by a refugee sailor to have been lost in a gale off the coast of Finland in 1944.
