OUR PROJECT: DEVELOP SUSTAINABLE ECOTOURISM FOR ALGER COUNTY, MICHIGAN Dr. Scott Jordan ([email protected]) & David Kronk ([email protected]) Northern Michigan University WHAT IS OVERTOURISM? • "Overtourism"- Tourism that has moved beyond the limits of acceptable change in a destination due to quantity of visitors, resulting in degradation of the environment and infrastructure, diminished travel experience, wear and tear on built heritage, and/or negative impacts on residents. WHAT IS ECOTOURISM? • Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education”. PRINCIPLES OF ECOTOURISM The travel experience should: 1. Support the conservation of natural areas and wildlife 2. Minimize air and water pollution as well as tourist waste 3. Offer safe and enriching or educational visitor experiences 4. Respect the cultural tradition of the host destination 5. Maintain and enhance the landscape so as to avoid physical or environmental degradation 6. Efficiently use scarce or non-renewable resources, and 7. Maximize opportunities for local prosperity for the host destination in the form of long-term economic viability for tourism, local management control, quality employment, local retention of visitor spending, and fair distribution of economic and social benefits. WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE ECOTOURISM? Sustainable: capable of being maintained at a steady level without damage to existing community, natural resources or economy. Ecotourism: -

Saint Mark's Square As Contested Political Space
SAINT MARK’S SQUARE AS CONTESTED POLITICAL SPACE: PROTESTING CRUISE TOURISM IN VENICE [ReceiveD 21st October 2020; accepteD February 21st 2021 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.119] AlexanDer Araya López Ca’ Foscari University, Venice < [email protected]> ABSTRACT: Saint Mark’s Square is unquestionably the most famous tourist attraction in Venice, a piazza characterised by its complex history, unique aesthetics anD many allusions to power (given its proximity to the Doge’s Palace anD Saint Mark’s Basilica). This square is the largest open space in the city anD while it is routinely crowDeD with tourists from all over the worlD, political Demonstrations have been prohibiteD since 1997. This article explores Saint Mark’s Square as a contested political space by focusing on the many local struggles against cruise tourism in Venice anD its lagoon. InsteaD of constituting an ‘apolitical’ space, the preferreD uses given to the square by local authorities and tourism stakeholders are manifestly ‘political’, producing a space of leisure and consumption that benefits the economic logic behinD the ‘normal’ functioning of the piazza. Classes held on site alternate with lectures and discussions that place material in its art historical context. Students explore Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque examples at many locations that show in one place the rich visual materials of all these periods, as well as materials and works acquired through conquest or collection. Students will carry out visually- and historically-based assignments in Venice. Upon return, undergraduates complete a paper based on site study, and graduate students submit a paper researched in Venice. The Marciana and Querini Stampalia libraries are available to all students, and those doing graduate work also have access to the Cini Foundation Library. Class meetings (refer to calendar) include lectures at the Università Internazionale dell’ Arte (UIA) and on-site visits to churches, architectural landmarks, and museums of Venice. CARING FOR THE ISLAND CITY Venetians reclaiming the city in times of overtourism: contested representations, narratives and infrastructures [Received October 23rd 2020; accepted March 1st 2021 – DOI: 10.21463/shima.117] Cornelia Dlabaja University of Vienna, Austria <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Overtourism has transformed Venice into a Disneyfied city in several ways, for example through short-term tourists and their perception and use of the city as a fun park. There is little perception of Venice as a lived-in space which is inhabited by families, elderly people and students going about their everyday lives in a city with only 52,000 inhabitants and a staggering 24 million visitors every year. The article examines the question of how Venetians are reclaiming their right to the island city as a common good for its inhabitants, relating this directly to how the city is cared for. It discusses the phenomena that come with the reshaping of the spaces and everyday lives of Venetian residents due to mass tourism. The different ways the city is inhabited are discussed, and the consequences thereof, based on ethnographic research containing field research in the form of qualitative interviews, participatory observations, analysis of social media activities on Facebook, analysis of secondary data and debates in the media. La pianta di Venezia disegnata da Paolino da Venezia (1270-1344), e inserita nel suo “Compendium” detto anche “Chronologia magna” (1346), restituisce la forma della città secondo un aspetto cronologico: come doveva presentarsi Venezia nel IX secolo (ma con alcuni particolari riferiti addirittura all'VIII secolo) e come doveva essere nel XII secolo, con aggiunte relative alla sua configurazione coeva all'autore. Dopo la morte di Fra' Paolino la pianta pergamenacea rimase nascosta a tutti per quattrocento anni. Solo nel 1730 Tomaso Temanza scoprì la pergamena e nel 1781 realizzò una incisone su rame nella quale riportò con una calligrafia più chiara il disegno e le scritte, incisione che diede alle stampe. Therefore, due to the new demands of the tourism economy, the major shift in the usage of historic city centers occurred–the process of ‘touristification’, that results in the emergence of its new, unsustainable form. Despite the significance of those circumstances, there is a lack of any broader quantitative research that would present the dynamic of the Airbnb phenomenon. Therefore, thanks to the recognition of AirDNA data, such statistical analysis has become possible. The goal of this paper is to investigate the Airbnb’s growth trajectories—data that bind together a market dimension of the growth in tourism and the community aspect of an urban change caused by its impact—from the perspective of its spatial distribution across Europe between 2014 and 2020. As a result, it was possible to follow the Airbnb phenomenon during its undisrupted period of growth—from its sudden eruption, further spread, and potential future after the COVID-19 outbreak—all together with its logarithmic character, concentration form, and momentum of already reached economic equilibrium. Anche quest’anno, andremo alla ricerca di angoli nascosti della nostra laguna, ovvero di qualche luogo che magari abbiamo già visitato con il nostro gommone, ma forse troppo in fretta e senza ben conoscerne la storia. Attraverseremo dunque tutta la laguna partendo da Sud (così potremo anche dar libero sfogo ai nostri cavalli, mare permettendo!), iniziando dalla Valle Millecampi, e per la precisione dal Casone Millecampi, caratteristico esempio di architettura lagunare dei secoli scorsi, inserito in un contesto ambientale molto suggestivo. E' l'unico lembo lagunare della Provincia di Padova, poco lontano da Chioggia, al di la dei grandi scavi di canalizzazione e deviazione dei fiumi Brenta e Bacchighione. Tutt'attorno la terraferma strappata alla laguna con le opere di bonifica iniziate già nel 1500 per volere del ricco possidente, nonché famoso mecenate, Alvise Cornaro. Qui ormeggeremo per una visita al luogo, recentemente ristrutturato. Pranzo al sacco, e nel pomeriggio, partenza per l’Isola della Certosa, situata nelle immediate vicinanze di Venezia, dove ormeggeremo e allestiremo le tende per la notte. L’isola, che fino a 10 anni fa giaceva in stato di abbandono, è stata recentemente interessata da un ampio processo di valorizzazione, nel rispetto dell’ambiente e del particolare contesto storico e ambientale della Laguna di Venezia. Infatti, dapprima è stata costruita una darsena, con circa 300 posti barca fino a 40 metri.
