It is important to note, the interviewer did not probe the participants to comment more on Old Town, but remained neutral. Participants clearly responded strongly to the artifacts and environment that mimicked their childhood and young adulthood memories. “The Old Town condition showed more memories recalled, 4 The Annual Bakeless Bake Sale The Niles Historical Society is hosting their Bakeless Bake Sale. We know that many of you have busy schedules and do not have the time to bake, so instead we ask for a kind donation. Proceeds go towards necessary expenses the museum incurs throughout the year. In addition, the museum still needs to purchase equipment to help preserve our artifacts. A donation from you will allow us to provide to residents and non-residents alike the opportunity to view exhibits and have access to Niles’ rich history. Please talk about our fundraiser among family, friends, and local merchants. We depend solely on donations. A Bakeless Bake Sale is on the Way In these busy days you don’t have to bake...pies or cookies or even a cake. You’d be surprised if you counted the cost… of material, heat and the time that you lost. Baking for fund-raising is extra work… yet a duty no one wants to shirk. So, here’s a plan that’s truly grand… and we feel sure you will understand. In an envelope, please put the price… you’d pay for a pie or cake or something nice. We hope you’ll give with a generous heart… And without a fuss or bother, you’ve done your part. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Bakeless Bake Sale - Niles Historical & Cultural Center Name:____________________________________________________________ Address:__________________________________________________________ City:_____________________ Zip:______________ Phone:________________ Thank you for your donation of: $_____________________________________ Please make checks payable to the Niles Historical Society and mail to 8970 Milwaukee Avenue, Niles, Illinois 60714 5 St. Matthew’s Cemetery January - February 2016 The Niles Historical Society recently The Historical Society would like to thank new discovered that there is a discrepancy as to members and renewed members for your pledges for who owns St. Matthew’s Cemetery. • 2015 Summer Tour Itinerary
2015 Summer Tour Itinerary MAY 20-JUNE 11, 2015 KORINTH, ISTHMIA, NEMEA, NAUPLION, MYCENAE, EPIDAURUS, OLYMPIA, DELPHI, THE ISLAND OF SAMOS, SELÇUK (ON TURKEY'S AEGEAN COAST), AND ATHENS Offered by Professor Michael Taber [This itinerary was created in consultation with our long-time Athenian travel agents Educational Tours and Cruises.] The itinerary for the Greece Study Tour for summer 2015 (23 days; 22 nights, including one on the flight to Greece) is divided into two portions: • A stay of 7 nights in the small city of Korinth • A circuit tour of 6 stops (over the succeeding 14 nights) on a chartered, air-conditioned coach and via ferry, with nights spent in Nauplio, Olympia, Delphi, the island of Samos, the Turkish town of Selçuk, and Athens This division allows students to acclimate themselves to Greek ways and the Greek language in the context of a slower paced town than, say, Athens. The Greeks to this day take an ancient pride in ensuring that guests leave with warm memories, and such heartfelt hospitality is to be treated as itself a gift, graciously, without any hint of the international stereotype of the ugly American. The Turks likewise take pride in their hospitality, and the Selçuk region is a popular stop for cruise ships in the Mediterranean, and for boat trips from Samos, which is a Greek island only a mile off Turkey's Aegean coast. To be able to spend two days in Turkey will deepen travelers' appreciation for the eastern Mediterranean. And like the Greeks, the Turks do like Americans--even if they don't always agree with the policies of the U.S.

  • Fortifications of Mount Oneion, Corinthia 329
hesperia 75 (2006) Fortifications of Pages 327–356 Mount Oneion, Corinthia ABSTRACT Recent investigations on the Isthmus of Corinth by the Eastern Korinthia Archaeological Survey (EKAS) have revealed a series of relatively humble fortifications situated along the ridge of Mt. Oneion, which forms the south- ern boundary of the Isthmus. These Late Classical–Early Hellenistic walls, along with a nearby series of later Venetian fortifications, were designed to block access to the south through several low passes. Controlling the passage of northern armies through the Isthmus to the Peloponnese was clearly a long-term strategic concern for diverse regional powers. The Isthmus of Corinth is one of the most strategically important regions in the eastern Mediterranean.1 It lies at the junction of the main north–south roads between central Greece and the Peloponnese and the sea routes be- tween the eastern and the western Mediterranean. The Corinthians, with their imposing citadel of Acrocorinth, traditionally controlled the Isthmus, which runs from the city’s western port of Lechaion to its eastern port at Kenchreai (Fig. 1). At numerous times, however, a foreign power such as Rome or Venice has sought to dominate this strategically significant corridor. The Isthmus is both a relatively fertile, flat agricultural area and the natural point of defense for the Peloponnese against any attack from the north.2 Only 7 km wide at its narrowest point, the Isthmus is cut today by the Corinth Canal and was crossed in antiquity by the Diolkos road. It is 1. We would especially like to thank also like to thank Ronald Stroud, thanks are due to the many members Daniel Pullen, codirector, and Thomas James Wiseman, and Merle Langdon of EKAS who trudged up and down Tartaron, field director, of the Eastern for advice and for reading earlier the steep paths of Oneion in hot and Korinthia Archaeological Survey drafts of the article.
