In spring, nature is in full bloom and entices visitors to explore the region; in summer, temperatures are very attractive both for relax- ation and activities; autumn is the season for connoisseurs to spend their eve- nings enjoying wine and “Törggelen” meals (traditional food); and winter has its very own charm and is a time of tranquility 6 and contemplation. 7 What a feeling! How many hours of sleep are best? How many hours of work? What about the time in between? What food is good for you? How do you strike the right balance? Inevitable questions, in all our lives. The lucky ones get to confront these ques tions early. They take them seriously, look for answers and seek out exaltation in a balanced existence. To achieve balance, listen to your body. Quite simply: if you are climbing up a steep path, the most important thing is the air that you breathe. Concentrating on the body itself, nature works its miracles: it adjusts, reassesses, shifts the emphasis and regulates. And all will be well.

Kaltern, or Caltare, or Chaltar, Chalter, Chaldar, Chal teren, Caldarum, Caldarium, Kalthari. All refer back to the Latin word caldarum – “copper ket tle” (thus, Kaltern’s coat of arms). Evidence that a settlement had already been established here at the time of the Romans. 1220 (wine from Kaltern mentioned) and 1273 (Kaltern named as a judicial seat) are the first documented dates; around 1250 there is also reference to Kaltern’s own unit of measure for wine, the “urna di Caldaro”. 1681 is the date documented to show Kaltern was granted the right to hold a market. 16 17 “Scattered between rock and water,” lay Kaltern’s eight → diverse communities, “there are just a handful of houses around their little neighborhood church, all surrounded by vineyards and apple or- chards.” [ F Birri C. Coco, WL 127] How they ever came to be united is just a wonder, since each of the communities is so uniquely distinct. After all: Kaltern’s → history is the result of a century-old dialogue between man and his landscape, an on going conversation be tween diverse → cultures.

Fruit Orchards Nearly every tenth apple consumed in Europe comes from South Tyrol. In Kaltern alone, roughly 30.000 apples are harvested each year. For this reason, fruit cultivation is the second most important agricultural contribution in South Tyrol, just behind wine production. Apple harvest runs from mid August until November. With 803.37 hectares of apple orchards, the yield/ hectare is approximately 50.000 kg.

Architecture Past and Present „In Kaltern, everything is oblique”, thinks Helmut Hochrain [ H. Hochrain, 28]. It could be true. And if you want to investigate that further, you might want to pick up two little brochures that provide information on both historical and modern architecture in Kaltern. Over 80 buildings are described and walking trails help you on your search. It began with the so-called „Überetscher Baustil“ in the 16th century that combined both northern and romantic elements. Now it has found its sequel in the numerous contemporary constructions in Kaltern – many of which have caused much international attention over the past few years. Both brochure are available in the Kaltern tourist office.
