Recent Changes and the Future Perspectives of Music Publishing in Finland RECENT CHANGES AND THE FUTURE PERSPECTIVES OF MUSIC PUBLISHING IN FINLAND Katri Hätönen Bachelor’s Thesis May 2014 Degree Programme in Music and Media Management Business and Services Management DESCRIPTION Author(s) Type of publication Date Hätönen, Katri Bachelor´s Thesis 09.05.2014 Pages Language 73 English Permission for web publication ( X ) Title RECENT CHANGES AND THE FUTURE PERSPECTIVES OF MUSIC PUBLISHING IN FINLAND Degree Programme Music and Media Management Tutor(s) Kreus, Pia Assigned by Elements Music Ltd./ Tommi Tuomainen Abstract The aim of the study was to examine the changes and the future perspectives of the Finnish music publishing industry in the 21st century. Therefore, the tasks, status, changes and the future perspec- tives of the Finnish music publishing industry were examined without forgetting the international context. The thesis was assigned by Elements Music Ltd. / Tommi Tuomainen. A total of five industry professionals representing different operators were interviewed for the study. A qualitative research method in the form of theme interviews was used to conduct the empirical part of the study. The interviews were implemented in two phases so that their accuracy and structure could be evaluated during the process. In addition, themes were used in analyzing and representing the results. The Finnish music publishing industry differs significantly from the international by its relatively small size. In the recent years the greatest changes in the industry have focused on the new technologies, EU-legislation and the more modern nature of the business. Even though the industry is small, with only few professional operators, the study showed that the music publishers are seen as an important part of the Finnish music industry. In the recent years, the international markets and export of music have become more important to the industry. The role of publishers in exploiting songs and network- ing in the international business is essential. Therefore, in the domestic markets their importance has increased as well, since professionalism is required when aiming at the international market. In addi- tion to the role in internationalisation, the study showed that future changes and opportunities lie in the developing online markets, synchronisation and game music. Based on the results, more opera- tors are wanted as well as needed for the industry. The new operators should consider focusing on specialising on the above mentioned new markets. Opinnäytetyössä perehdytään musiikkikustantamisen tehtäviin, ase- maan, muutoksiin ja tulevaisuuden näkymiin Suomessa kuitenkaan kansainvälistä kontekstia unohta- matta. Opinnäytetyön toimeksiantajana toimi Elements Music Oy/ Tommi Tuomainen. Opinnäytetyötä varten haastateltiin yhteensä viittä musiikkialan ammattilaista. He edustavat asian- tuntijoita, jotka toimivat musiikkialan eri tehtävissä. Viime vuosina musiikkialan viennistä on tullut yhä tärkeämpää. I wanted to use the the- sis for studying and understanding the industry, especially in Finland. The lack of numerous previous studies in the field was, for me, one of the reasons to choose the topic on the Finnish music publishing industry and start research- ing it. Music publishing industry is rather an unknown business and profession in Finland, even though it was part of the global music industry before the time of recordings. Over the years, music publishing has changed and nowadays it is much more than publishing sheet music, which was the original function of a music publisher. The subject of the thesis, the Finnish music publishing indus- try and its recent changes was selected for examining the profession and the Finnish industry in more depth. In the thesis the Finnish music publishing industry in the 21st century until the present and in the near future is examined. Like the music industry in general, the music publishing industry has had to develop itself and adapt to the changing markets and industry conditions.

Conductor, composer and violinist Jaakko Kuusisto enjoys an extensive career that was launched by a series of successes in international violin competitions in the 1990s. Having recorded concertos by some of the most prominent Finnish contemporary composers, such as Rautavaara, Aho, Sallinen and Pulkkis, he is one of the most frequently recorded Finnish instrumentalists. When BIS Records launched a project of complete Sibelius recordings, Kuusisto had a major role in the violin works and string chamber music. Moreover, his discography contains several albums outside the classical genre. Kuusisto’s conducting repertoire is equally versatile and ranges from baroque to the latest new works, regardless of genre. He has worked with many leading orchestras, including Minnesota Orchestra; Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras; NDR Hannover, DeFilharmonie in Belgium; Chamber Orchestras of Tallinn and Lausanne; Helsinki, Turku and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestras; Oulu Symphony Orchestra as well as the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. Kuusisto recently conducted his debut performances with the Krakow Sinfonietta and Ottawa’s National Arts Center Orchestra, as well as at the Finnish National Opera’s major production Indigo, an opera by heavy metal cello group Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso. The score of the opera is also arranged and orchestrated by Kuusisto. Kuusisto performs regularly as soloist and chamber musician and has held the position of artistic director at several festivals. Currently he is the artistic director of the Oulu Music Festival with a commitment presently until 2017. Kuusisto also enjoys a longstanding relationship with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra: having served as concertmaster during 1999-2012, his collaboration with the orchestra now continues with frequent guest conducting and recordings, to name a few.

  • Exciting New Works and Modern Classics at the Finnish National
Exciting new works and modern classics at the Finnish National Opera 2015–2016 In the 2015–2016 season, the Finnish National Opera will present eight opera and ballet premieres with a strong contemporary theme, two of them world premieres of Finnish works. All of the productions premiered feature works created within the last 100 years, except for The Magic Flute. Directors and choreographers with a strong personal touch will also be showcased, including distinguished names such as Peter Stein, Dmitri Bertman, Carolyn Carlson and Nacho Duato. The season opens with a flourish with the premiere of a new production of the world’s most successful musical, The Phantom of the Opera. A hit musical and a new opera The opera season will begin on 4 September with the world’s most successful musical, The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, performed for the first time in Finland. While most productions of this musical around the world have been replicas of the original, the Finnish National Opera has been given the rare privilege of creating a completely new production, directed by Tiina Puumalainen. Group bookings were taken from last spring, and individual tickets went on sale in November. The performances for the autumn are sold out. The other opera premiere in the autumn is The Nose, an uproarious and farcical opera from the early career of Dmitri Shostakovich. The production is directed by Peter Stein, one of Europe’s most highly appreciated stage directors. Based on a short story by Nikolai Gogol, the opera follows a civil servant named Kovalyov as he chases his dismembered nose around St Petersburg.
