A World War II American fighter jet was the inspiration for this orchestral scherzo. Martinů pays homage to technology, the machine age and the brave pilots who risked death, flying these bombers to win the war. Ravel: Piano Concerto in G Major. Ravel was enthralled by American jazz, whose influence is apparent in this jazzy concerto. The pristine slow movement concerto evokes Mozart’s spirit in its clarity and elegance. Ravel’s wit sparkles in the finale, proving that he often had a twinkle in his eye. Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances. Rachmaninoff’s final orchestral work, a commission from the Philadelphia Orchestra, brings together Russian dance and Eastern European mystery. Listen for the “Dies irae” at the thrilling close. De term ‘instant composing’ is gemunt door Mengelberg en staat voor een specifieke vorm van muzikaal denken en handelen op basis van improvisatie. In instant composing is improviseren een vorm van ter plekke componeren. Dit proces is mede bepalend voor de bijzondere positie van ICP in de eigentijdse muziek. De methode ICP werkt alleen als de musici meester zijn op hun instrument en met elkaar tot in hun diepste wezen verbonden zijn. De huidige bezetting speelt inmiddels bijna 25 jaar in dezelfde samenstelling. Om beurten stelt een van de musici een setlist samen voor aanvang van het concert. (Voorbeeld setlist (handschrift Han Bennink): zie hieronder) Voor de instant composing-methode draagt een aantal orkestleden stukken of thema’s aan, in notenschrift uitgewerkt: soms niet mee dan een paar akkoorden, soms in uitgebreide arrangementen en varianten daartussen, die– op het podium – bedacht en gespeeld worden.

  • Conductor, Composer and Violinist Jaakko Kuusisto Enjoys An
    Conductor, composer and violinist Jaakko Kuusisto enjoys an extensive career that was launched by a series of successes in international violin competitions in the 1990s. Having recorded concertos by some of the most prominent Finnish contemporary composers, such as Rautavaara, Aho, Sallinen and Pulkkis, he is one of the most frequently recorded Finnish instrumentalists. When BIS Records launched a project of complete Sibelius recordings, Kuusisto had a major role in the violin works and string chamber music. Moreover, his discography contains several albums outside the classical genre. Kuusisto’s conducting repertoire is equally versatile and ranges from baroque to the latest new works, regardless of genre. He has worked with many leading orchestras, including Minnesota Orchestra; Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras; NDR Hannover, DeFilharmonie in Belgium; Chamber Orchestras of Tallinn and Lausanne; Helsinki, Turku and Tampere Philharmonic Orchestras; Oulu Symphony Orchestra as well as the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra. Kuusisto recently conducted his debut performances with the Krakow Sinfonietta and Ottawa’s National Arts Center Orchestra, as well as at the Finnish National Opera’s major production Indigo, an opera by heavy metal cello group Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen and Perttu Kivilaakso. The score of the opera is also arranged and orchestrated by Kuusisto. Kuusisto performs regularly as soloist and chamber musician and has held the position of artistic director at several festivals. Currently he is the artistic director of the Oulu Music Festival with a commitment presently until 2017. Kuusisto also enjoys a longstanding relationship with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra: having served as concertmaster during 1999-2012, his collaboration with the orchestra now continues with frequent guest conducting and recordings, to name a few.

Zij werd tot tweemaal toe onderscheiden met de Prize for an Outstanding Cellist tijdens het Tanglewood Festival in de Verenigde Staten. Naast de 'gangbare' soloconcerten voerde zij o.a. het van Henriëtte Bosmans, het Celloconcert van Prokofiev, de eerste versie van het Eerste Celloconcert van Martinu en de Cello Symphony van Britten uit. Al sinds haar studietijd is zij lid van het ASKO Ensemble, waarbij zij soleerde in het Celloconcert van Ligeti en waarmee zij tijdens de eerste Cellobiënnale van Amsterdam in 2006 de wereldpremière verzorgde van het Celloconcert van Dimitris Andrikopoulos. Ook was zij vele jaren lid van het Leo Smit Ensemble, waarmee zij, behalve in de reguliere concerten in Amsterdam, ook in Parijs en in Londen optrad. Doris Hochscheid bespeelt een Bernardel, haar ter beschikking gesteld door een bewonderaar (www.dorishochscheid.nl). was aanvankelijk leerling van pianist-componist Hans Osieck. Na zijn literatuurstudies aan de Universiteiten van Utrecht en Parijs studeerde hij piano en kamermuziek bij Herman Uhlhorn en Eli Goren aan het Utrechts Conservatorium. Tijdens de Hugo Wolf Wettbewerb in Stuttgart in 1987 ontving hij, naast de persoonlijke complimenten van Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, van de jury een speciale liedbegeleidersprijs.

Apocalyptica, kultni trojec finskih čelistov, je kljub nizkim temperaturam uspešno dvigoval temperaturo na koncertu v Križankah. Primorska pevka Lara Baruca, po novem Lara-B, je imela tokrat nalogo, da ogreje publiko. To ji je bolj ali manj uspelo v tričetrturnem nastopu, v katerem je predstavila udarno mešanico novejših in starejših skladb. Poleg trših zvokov, kakršne najdemo tudi na njenem zadnjem albumu Mindhacker, se je Lara predstavila tudi v precej sveži in odštekani odrski podobi. Čekeliš) Dare (Foto: Metalski napad klasičnih instrumentov ... bi lahko označili glasbo Apocalyptice, ki je v avditoriju Križank udarila nekaj minut po deseti uri. Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen in Perttu Kivilaakso (ki jim na živih nastopih pomaga še Antero Manninen, ki nenehno nosi skrivnostna črna očala), so že pred desetletjem odkrili popolnoma svojo zvrst glasbe. Takrat so izdali album (Plays Metallica by Four Cellos) s priredbami pesmi Metallice, ki jim je poleg edinstvenega klasično-metalskega zvoka tudi hitro prinesel številne oboževalce in množico prodanih plošč. V dobri uri in pol se je tako zvrstilo precej skladb iz njihove desetletne kariere, med katerimi so bile najbolj z navdušenjem sprejete Nothing Else Matters, Enter Sandman, Master of Puppets, Seek and Destroy (vse priredbe Metallice), pozabili pa niso niti na svoje stvaritve, kot sta Path No. 2 in Repressed. Težko je spregledati dejstvo, da Apocalyptica najbolje deluje prav na živih nastopih, saj je prek CD in DVD predvajalnikov zelo težko podoživeti energijo, ki jo ti čarovniki s klasičnimi instrumenti oddajajo na odru. Poleg tega pa nastope začinijo z veščim metalskim opletanjem z lasmi, ki ga obvladata Perttu in Eicca, slednji pa je med posameznimi skladbami poskrbel tudi za simpatične komentarje in napovedi v »finski« angleščini.
