In recent years, this has been strongly advocated by Meredith Kline and others influenced by his views. In this article I will ask some historical and theological questions of the claim. I will also consider how far Reformed theology, particularly in the period up to the production of the major confessional documents of the Westminster Assembly (1643-47), was of one mind on the question. 2 I will concentrate on the argument itself, without undue reference to persons.3 1. The Spanish Match and Jacobean Political Thought, 1618-1624 Kimberley Jayne Hackett Ph.D University of York History Department July 2009 Abstract Seventeenth-century English political thought was once viewed as insular and bound by a common law mentality. Significant work has been done to revise this picture and highlight the role played by continental religious resistance theory and what has been termed 'classical republicanism'. In addition to identifying these wider influences, recent work has focused upon the development of a public sphere that reveals a more socially diverse engagement with politics, authority and opposition than has hitherto been acknowledged. Yet for the period before the Civil War our understanding of the way that several intellectual influences were interacting to inform a politically alert 'public' is unclear, and expressions of political opposition are often tied to a pre-determined category of religious affiliation. As religious tension erupted into conflict on the continent, James I's pursuit ofa Spanish bride for Prince Charles and determination to follow a diplomatic solution to the war put his policy direction at odds with a dominant swathe of public opinion. During the last years of his reign, therefore, James experienced an unprecedented amount of opposition to his government of England. This opposition was articulated through a variety of media, and began to raise questions beyond the conduct of policy in addressing fundamental issues of political authority. By examining the deployment of political ideas during the domestic crisis of the early 1620s, this thesis seeks to uncover the varied ways in which differing discourses upon authority and obedience were being articulated against royal government.

    The Synopsis of a Purer Theology in Its Historical and Theological Context Andreas J. Beck and Dolf te Velde As announced in the introductions to the first and second volumes, the third and last volume of this bilingual edition of the Synopsis Purioris Theologiae includes, next to the introduction to this volume, a detailed account of the historical and theological contexts of this work.1 This extensive historical and theological introduction will first explore in general the historical and theo- logical backgrounds to the Leiden Synopsis. Next, it will introduce the four authors of this important handbook of scholastic Reformed theology and ex- plain its origin in disputation cycles at Leiden University. In addition, the most important sources of the Synopsis will be discussed. Another substantial sec- tion will examine characteristic features of its theology. This general introduc- tion will conclude with a survey of the reception history of the Synopsis. 1 Historical and Theological Background 1.1 The Age of Confessionalization The Synopsis Purioris Theologiae, first published in 1625, is a collection of fifty- two disputations that were composed and defended between 1620 and 1624, and that were presided by the Leiden professors Johannes Polyander (1568– 1646), Andreas Rivetus (1573–1651), Antonius Walaeus (1572–1639), and An- tonius Thysius (1565–1640). The four professors composed the disputation the- ses and presided in turn; thus any individual preference in the topics covered may be ruled out. The first ten disputations were presided alternately by Poly- ander, Walaeus, and Thysius; starting with disputation 11 “On the Providence of God,” Andreas Rivetus took his place as second in rank after Polyander.

Door deze inspiratie Dgedreven hebben de schrijvers van de Bijbelboeken de onfeilbare Goddelijke waarheden opgetekend. Gods Woord is het middel dat de Heere Zelf gebruikt tot zaligheid van de Zijnen. Wat nodig is tot zaligheid wordt in dit Woord gevon- den. ‘Wij geloven dat deze Heilige Schrift den wil Gods volkomenlijk vervat, en dat al hetgeen de mens schuldig is te geloven om zalig te worden, daarin genoegzaam geleerd wordt’, zo belijden wij met de Nederlandse Geloofsbelijde- nis in artikel 7. De Heilige Schriften kunnen wijs maken tot zaligheid, door het geloof hetwelk in Christus Jezus, zoals Paulus schrijft aan zijn geliefde leerling Timotheüs (1 Tim. 3:15). Dat is de voornaamste reden om het Woord Gods met aandacht en onderzoekend te lezen, met de bede of God Zijn Heilige Geest, Die Hij aan de Bijbelschrijvers gaf om hen te leiden in het schrijven, ook wil schenken tot verlichting van het verstand om de lezer te leiden in het lezen.
