We are very happy to announce the publication of 250 CLASSIC MOVIES by George McManus.

250 Classic Movies brings to the attention of movie fans, and hopefully new fans of older films, motion pictures that are well worth seeing, time and again. Actually, the really good movies never get old. The fist time you see a classic film you might watch it for pure entertainment value. The second time might engross you more in the story. The acting might enthrall you more in the third viewing. And the fourth time? The cinematography, the costumes, the make-up, the sets, or the character players, some in the background (and in musicals, the individual dances), all may suddenly capture your imagination. That’s the good thing about the classics—they don’t get old because there is so much to behold it’s almost impossible to truly see it all the first time around.

For this book, the author has selected 250 films that have been acclaimed by critics and/or have been box-office winners or chosen as award-winners by various organizations. Are they the greatest movies ever made? Not necessarily, but they certainly are among the best. To add to

2 the full enjoyment of each film, there are data, awards, trivia, a review, back-stories, posters and photographs—including stills and candids. The book covers twenty categories of filmmaking including foreign films. Represented are famous films from England, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Australia, and Russia.

While this book is intended as an overview of the great movies of the first century of filmmaking, we hope it serves as an inspiration to readers to look at other movies of the first hundred years because, after all, in the Golden Age of Hollywood studios were making 700 films a year! So we have a lot to look forward to in our research into the great Classic Movies.

George McManus spent 40 years as a broadcast journalist, most of it in California, where he covered the Academy Awards backstage. His time in radio/TV also provided him the opportunity to interview, at length, dozens of filmmakers, often while they were on a book or movie promotion tour. These experiences not only inspired this book, but also enhanced the author’s knowledge/appreciation of the films that grace these pages.

Mr. McManus lives with his wife and their children in Northern California. He hosts The Midnight Movie on the local community access channel.

If you would like to order a copy of the book, please visit our website: http://www.bearmanormedia.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=663 The Walton Family Cookbook

NEWS FROM OUR FRIENDS AT DAVE WHITE PRESENTS....

Grand Funk Railroad, Genya Ravan, and the 100 Worst Movies of All-Time on the Next "Dave White Presents"!

In 1968, (guitar), (bass), and (drums) became , one of the era's most popular, and most controversial, power trios. In 1970, they sold more albums than any other American band and broke The Beatles' Shea Stadium attendance record by selling out in just 72 hours. They went platinum with their hit, "I'm Your Captain/ ." Then, in 1972, they added keyboardist Craig Frost, moved into rhythm and blues, and had a successful string of new chart-toppers like "We're an American Band," "The Loco-Motion," and "Some Kind of Wonderful."

On Tues. July 30, Don Brewer, the voice and composer of many of those hits, shares his inside story behind GFR on the new "Dave White Presents"! From Detroit garage band to being immortalized by Homer Simpson, Don takes you on stage, in the studio, and tells you what the band is doing now. They're still at it, you know.

6

As it happens, GFR got their record deal because of their appearance at the 1968 Atlanta Pop Festival. Another band to get the same boost from that gig was the brass/rock group called Ten Wheel Drive featuring Genya Ravan. Genya had an earlier life as a successful pop singer as she was Goldie in the very first all-girl rock band of all time, Goldie and The Gingerbreads. In fact, in 1965, the group hit their stride in the U.K. where they toured with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Manfred Mann, and The Yardbirds. Then came 1968, Ten Wheel Drive, and three jazz/blues/rock albums adored by critics but just didn't crack the radio airways. Why not?

On the next DWP, the saucy and spunky Genya will share her memories about it all including her time producing folks like Ronnie Spector, trying to get her band to go to Woodstock, and all the news behind her sizzling, bluesy new CD, Cheesecake Girl. We'll play you a Ten Wheel Drive classic banned on most radio stations at the time, a bit of Goldie and The Gingerbreads, and one of the jumpin' tunes on a CD you really don't want to miss!

Then, Dave White takes you to the movies with film critic Phil Hall, author of the upcoming THE GREATEST BAD MOVIES OF ALL TIME. Dave and Phil talk about what makes a movie bad and forgettable and what makes one so bad, It's unforgettable for the wrong reasons. They discuss a few examples from Phil's book and how the list of 100 movies was created. You're invited to compare your own lists with Phil's as the choices are, well, never ending!

So Grand Funk Railroad, soulful belter Genya Ravan, and the worst movies ever made on Tues. July 30 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern, then 7:30 Pacific over-- www.KSAV.org

You can pre-record the show at Digital Audio Recording (DAR)-- http://www.dar.fm/faq.php

From Wed. July 31, the 90 minute show will be available as a podcast, mp3 download, from itunes, through TEVO and Sticher.com, or on the player at-- www.audioentertainment.org/dwp

We are pleased to announce the publication of GODS OF GRINDHOUSE: INTERVIEWS WITH EXPLOITATION FILMMAKERS by Andrew J. Rausch.

7

“Grindhouse” is a term that refers to theaters that primarily showed exploitation films. There were a handful of these theaters on 42nd Street in New York City. These theaters showed a variety of films that generally featured sex, violence, and bizarre subject matter. These included slasher films, X-rated movies, badly-dubbed Hong Kong chop socky pictures, blaxploitation, and general exploitation films. The period most generally associated with these types of movie houses stretches from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. Since the demise of these theaters, and with them certain types of film, an enthusiasm and appreciation for them has developed. Hollywood films such as Black Dynamite, Machete, and Hobo with a Shotgun have since payed homage to them.

Gods of Grindhouse: Interviews with Exploitation Filmmakers contains conversations with a variety of filmmakers associated with such films. The book contains interviews with key figures such as , Herschell Gordon Lewis, Larry Cohen, David F. Friedman, William Lustig, Ted V. Mikels, and others. It also contains interviews with Bill Rebane and Russ Meyer that have never appeared in print before! This is a one-of-a-kind collection of interviews that gets as down and dirty as the films themselves.

Reader C J Shank has very kindly reviewed WISHING ON A STAR: THE LIFE OF EDDIE CARROLL by Carolyn Carroll and Brad Strickland.

Here is her review:

One of my big regrets is not being able to see Eddie Carroll do his Jack Benny show in person. I had written to numerous theatres in my area to ask them to schedule him with no success and had finally decided I was going to fly to wherever he was appearing when he became ill. The new Bear Manor book is an amazing tribute to Mr. Carroll, who was also the voice of Jiminy Cricket and the book has some hilarious Jack Benny stories in it. Following is my review for the book:

You may not know Eddie Carroll's name but you have heard his voice in hundreds of commercials and his appearances in numerous tv series - as well as the voice of Jiminy Cricket. Carroll was born in Canada and went to performing arts school with Robert Goulet. He always wanted to go to Hollywood and finally made it. He had ups and downs but always a positive attitude. The two things Carroll is most known for is the voice of Disney's Jiminy Cricket and his tribute show in honor of Jack Benny. This biography provides a great look at Carroll's life, the struggles he had but the goal of a life

8 in show business always in sight and the positive effect he had on all who knew or worked with him. Friendships with actors Ben Cooper and Jaime Farr are highlighted as well as the many people Carroll met and worked with throughout his life. The book lets you laugh out loud at times as well as brings a tear to your eye as Carroll goes through his final illness with the same optimism he showed throughout his life. A well done tribute to Eddie Carroll. - CJ Shank

HORROR HITS: RICHARD GORDON by Tom Weaver has been reviewed by Rod Lott on the Bookgasm website.

Here is an excerpt from the review:

Published by BearManor Media, HORROR HITS is arranged chronologically. Made between 1958 and 1981, each film is introduced with a brief synopsis, followed by a transcript of Weaver and Gordon’s talks, presented in the easy-to-read Q&A format. With little prompting by the author, Gordon touches on all aspects imaginable, from the genesis of each project down to the salaries of all involved. It’s the anecdotes in between, however, that offer the meat, such as Boris Karloff acting like a saint, but Christopher Lee acting like anything but.
