My email is [email protected] New Book - GEORGE CLAYTON JOHNSON: FICTIONEER We are very happy to announce the publication of GEORGE CLAYTON JOHNSON: FICTIONEER by Vivien Kooper This legendary writer allows us into his inner circle, sharing special memories and moments from his friendships, business relationships, and collaborations with such notable writers as Rod Serling, Ray Bradbury, Charles Beaumont, and William F. Nolan, among others. George Clayton Johnson: Fictioneer discusses the intricacies of writing for the classic television series, The Twilight Zone, and reveals the twists and turns of imagination that led him to pen his 1 iconic Twilight Zone episodes. He wrote four stories-with-teleplays for The Twilight Zone (Nothing in the Dark, A Penny for Your Thoughts, A Game of Pool, and Kick the Can). George also wrote four stories adapted by others into teleplays for The Twilight Zone (All Of Us are Dying story retitled The Four of Us are Dying and Execution story, both adapted by Rod Serling; The Prime Mover story adapted by Charles Beaumont; and Ninety Years Without Slumbering adapted by Richard DeRoy. George discusses the creative process behind Logan’s Run and Ocean’s Eleven, and reveals how his teleplay for Star Trek, entitled The Man Trap, came to premiere even before the pilot aired. This giant from the Golden Age of Television shares invaluable wisdom, insights, and tricks of the trade in this enlightening, instructive, and delightful account of his life as a Fictioneer. Johnson shares an Academy Award nomination with Ray Bradbury for the screenplay of Icarus Montgolfier Wright and a WGA nomination with Jack Golden Russell for the story upon which Ocean’s Eleven was based. Just as he does when he lectures at such stellar institutions of higher learning as UCLA, USC, or CalArts, George Clayton Johnson gives the reader a birds-eye view into the writing life and the early days of television and film, painting a picture filled with richness, texture, heart, and imagination. You can order a copy of this book from our website: http://www.bearmanormedia.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=664 New Book - 250 CLASSIC MOVIES We are very happy to announce the publication of 250 CLASSIC MOVIES by George McManus. 250 Classic Movies brings to the attention of movie fans, and hopefully new fans of older films, motion pictures that are well worth seeing, time and again. Actually, the really good movies never get old. The fist time you see a classic film you might watch it for pure entertainment value. The second time might engross you more in the story. The acting might enthrall you more in the third viewing. And the fourth time? The cinematography, the costumes, the make-up, the sets, or the character players, some in the background (and in musicals, the individual dances), all may suddenly capture your imagination. That’s the good thing about the classics—they don’t get old because there is so much to behold it’s almost impossible to truly see it all the first time around. For this book, the author has selected 250 films that have been acclaimed by critics and/or have been box-office winners or chosen as award-winners by various organizations. Are they the greatest movies ever made? Not necessarily, but they certainly are among the best. To add to 2 the full enjoyment of each film, there are data, awards, trivia, a review, back-stories, posters and photographs—including stills and candids. The book covers twenty categories of filmmaking including foreign films. Represented are famous films from England, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, Sweden, Australia, and Russia. While this book is intended as an overview of the great movies of the first century of filmmaking, we hope it serves as an inspiration to readers to look at other movies of the first hundred years because, after all, in the Golden Age of Hollywood studios were making 700 films a year! So we have a lot to look forward to in our research into the great Classic Movies. George McManus spent 40 years as a broadcast journalist, most of it in California, where he covered the Academy Awards backstage. His time in radio/TV also provided him the opportunity to interview, at length, dozens of filmmakers, often while they were on a book or movie promotion tour. These experiences not only inspired this book, but also enhanced the author’s knowledge/appreciation of the films that grace these pages. Mr. McManus lives with his wife and their children in Northern California. He hosts The Midnight Movie on the local community access channel. If you would like to order a copy of the book, please visit our website: http://www.bearmanormedia.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=663 The Walton Family Cookbook We are very happy to announce that we have republished THE WALTON FAMILY COOKBOOK by Sylvia Resnick. Gathering around the dinner table to discuss the happenings of the day was a tradition that was cherished by all of the Walton family members. Good food and lively conversation creates a bond that is cherished and long remembered by each of us. The Walton Family Cookbook is filled with favorite dishes of the cast members. Ralph Waite's (John Walton) pot roast; Ellen Corby's (Grandma Walton) fresh baked Whole Wheat Bread; Judy Norton's (Mary Ellen) Health Salad and Michael Learned's (Olivia Walton) French Onion Soup and Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing are just some of the taste bud delights you'll find inside plus favorite anecdotes about their own family dinners. Grand Funk Railroad, Genya Ravan, and the 100 Worst Movies of All-Time on the Next "Dave White Presents"! In 1968, Mark Farner (guitar), Mel Schacher (bass), and Don Brewer (drums) became Grand Funk Railroad, one of the era's most popular, and most controversial, power trios. In 1970, they sold more albums than any other American band and broke The Beatles' Shea Stadium attendance record by selling out in just 72 hours. They went platinum with their hit, "I'm Your Captain/ Closer to Home." Then, in 1972, they added keyboardist Craig Frost, moved into rhythm and blues, and had a successful string of new chart-toppers like "We're an American Band," "The Loco-Motion," and "Some Kind of Wonderful." On Tues. July 30, Don Brewer, the voice and composer of many of those hits, shares his inside story behind GFR on the new "Dave White Presents"! From Detroit garage band to being immortalized by Homer Simpson, Don takes you on stage, in the studio, and tells you what the band is doing now.

JUDITH MERRIL: AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY AND GUIDE Compiled by Elizabeth Cummins Department of English and Technical Communication University of Missouri-Rolla Rolla, MO 65409-0560 College Station, TX The Center for the Bibliography of Science Fiction and Fantasy December 2006 Table of Contents Preface Judith Merril Chronology A. Books B. Short Fiction C. Nonfiction D. Poetry E. Other Media F. Editorial Credits G. Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate.

N.B. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE READER USE 2-PAGE VIEW (BOOK FORMAT WITH SCROLLING ENABLED) IN ACROBAT READER OR BROWSER. “EVEN’ING IT OUT – A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THE LAST TWO YEARS OF “THE TWILIGHT ZONE” Television Series (minus ‘THE’)” A Study in Three Parts by Andrew Ramage © 2019, The Twilight Zone Museum. All rights reserved. Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s.

So, over the next few issues you might see some changes – temporary absence of some writers, a different balance of articles and other differences from the usual. We trust you’ll understand, and we look forward to when these pages, and our lives, reach a new equilibrium. It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Stereophile deputy editor Art Dudley. He was one of the finest men ever to grace the audio industry. My tribute to him is in these pages. Also in this issue: Rich Isaacs begins a series on Italian progressive rock with a look at the great PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi). Ken Sander takes us on a wild rock and roll ride with Eric Burdon and War. Professor Larry Schenbeck continues his series on immersive sound. WL Woodward gets jazzed about bass. John Seetoo concludes his series on legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra/film composer/techno-pop pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto. In a special report we ask audio companies how they’re responding to the COVID-19 crisis.
