Photo: Geoff Shaw Royal Navy Corsair comes in fast and low. There were at least four Corsairs at Defford from 1944, for trials with the Royal Naval section at Defford. In this edition of ‘Contact!’ we tell the story of Lt Cdr ‘Loopy’ Dunworth DSC, who was Officer Commanding the Naval Section at Defford 1951-1953. A popular and eccentric figure, he stayed on at Defford as a test pilot with Boulton Paul (see ‘Contact!’ no. 123, January 2019), at Defford after leaving the Navy. .2. Lt Cdr Geoffrey “Loopy” Dunworth DSC OC Naval Section, RAF Defford 1951-53. BPA Pilot 1953-1961 By Les Whitehouse, with additional material from Dennis Williams and overall editing by the editor Born in Manchester 5/8/1921 Geoff Dunworth qualified as a Research Chemist for ICI but in Sept 1940 he volunteered to be aircrew with the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, as an Observer. From RNAS Arbroath, he was posted to 817 Squadron aboard HMS Victorious, August 1941, which was part of the replacements for aircraft losses over Petsamo and Kirkenes, Norway in July. Escort of the Arctic convoys to Archangel (Operation Dervish) and then the escort of HMS Argus returning from Murmansk followed. Victorious launched air attacks, on targets in Norway, through to October 1941. L/A Geoff Dunworth along with gunner L/A Davies were teamed up with S/L Raymond. -

Hellcat Mk.I / Mk.II 7078 US NAVY WWII FIGHTER 1:72 SCALE PLASTIC KIT intro There are few aircraft types that took part in combat during World War Two, that can be described with such one sided outcomes in terms of kill : loss ratio as the Hellcat. Representing the middle of the Grumman Cat lineage, the Hellcat was a unique type right from its beginnings. Success of its older brother, the Wildcat, which carried on its shoulders the bulk of the strain of the Pacific air war in 1942, prompted the US Navy to give Grumman free reign over the independent development of a new fighter. This type was to act as insurance in the event the concept of the F4U Corsair turned out unsuccessful. Grumman designers set forth with the design, with emphasis on ease of manufacture, performance and suitability for carrier ops. On the 30th of June, 1941, as Corsair production was initiating, the Navy signed an order for two prototype XF6F-1s, and a star was born. Original expectations centered around development of the proven F4F Wildcat, which was to be dominated by installation of more powerful engines. As such, this eventually evolved into a new fighter altogether. The US Navy also had accumulated combat experience, and was able to incorporate pilot suggestions into the design. The Hellcat was some 60% heavier than the Wildcat, was more heavily armed, had a more powerful engine, was more heavily armored, carried more fuel and was generally of a more robust construction. The first prototype took to the air on June 26th, 1942, and by January, 1943 equipped the first Navy unit, VF-9, on the deck of the USS Essex. -

Changes to UK Defence Statistics (UKDS) this year include a new section on Defence Inflation and an expanded International Defence section in Chapter 1, the restructuring of the Armed Forces Personnel section in Chapter 2, and a new section on Amputations in Chapter 3. UK Defence Statistics (UKDS) is a National Statistics publication, produced according to the standards of the Official Statistics Code of Practice. However some of the tables in UKDS do not have National Statistics status – some are produced by areas outside of the scope of the Government Statistical Service; some do not yet meet all the quality standards of the Official Statistics Code of Practice; and others have not gone through the required assessment process to be classed as National Statistics. All such tables are clearly marked with explanatory notes. This year UKDS is once again being issued as a web document only, due to financial constraints within the Ministry of Defence. Each table and chapter is available in pdf format which is suitable for printing. There is also a pdf version of the entire publication, and of the UKDS factsheet. We have ceased publication of the UKDS pocket cards this year, since they are of limited value in electronic format. -

WESTWOOD nCHTING C1TTDC or WORLD World War II was the last of the great naval wars, the culmination of a century of warship development in which steam, steel and finally aviation had been adapted for naval use. The battles, both big and small, of this war are well known, and the names of some of the ships which fought them are still familiar, names like Bismarck, Warspite and Enterprise. This book presents these celebrated fighting ships, detailing both their war- time careers and their design features. In addition it describes the evolution between the wars of the various ship types : how their designers sought to make compromises to satisfy the require - ments of fighting qualities, sea -going capability, expense, and those of the different naval treaties. Thanks to the research of devoted ship enthusiasts, to the opening of government archives, and the publication of certain memoirs, it is now possible to evaluate World War II warships more perceptively and more accurately than in the first postwar decades. The reader will find, for example, how ships in wartime con- ditions did or did not justify the expecta- tions of their designers, admiralties and taxpayers (though their crews usually had a shrewd idea right from the start of the good and bad qualities of their ships). With its tables and chronology, this book also serves as both a summary of the war at sea and a record of almost all the major vessels involved in it.
