Oppida: A Settlement Phenomenon of the later Iron Ages of Britain and Temperate Europe: An Analysis of Colchester, Titelberg, and Canterbury Volume Two The Sites: Later Iron Age Occupation at Colchester, Titelberg and Canterbury Emma Louise Jackson Classical and Archaeological Studies School of European Culture and Language Thesis Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Kent March 2017 7: Colchester The modern town of Colchester, (often referred to as Camulodunum in literature pertaining to the site’s later Iron Age, and Iron Age/Roman transitional period, occupation), has a long and vibrant history, with secure but not continuous evidence for occupation dating back to the Bronze Age (Crummy 1995b, 131-133). Flints dating to the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods have also been recovered through excavation (Brooks and Masefield 2006, 4; Brooks et al. 2007, 1); however, these are so limited in number that it is impossible to state definitively whether occupation was actually present at these times. Despite this early evidence for human activity it was not until the later Iron Age (Hawkes and Hull 1947, 5; Hawkes 1995, 4-6; Niblett 1985; 1-3) that Colchester truly became a flourishing centre of occupation. This is particularly true of the last c.50 years of the later Iron Age, (from c.15/10 BC1), when Colchester, (Figure 7.1), became one of Britain’s most significant settlements. Unsurprisingly, therefore, the archaeology associated with this period is both extensive and exciting; with, as N. Crummy rightly notes, ‘enormous research potential’ (2013, 38). Consequently, it was an ideal case study for the present thesis (see Chapter 1.2.3.1). -

OPENING SPEECH PETER RAEDTS At last the participants in the British-Dutch colloquium meet in the place, where they should have met all along, on the very spot where British-Dutch cooperation started thirteen hundred and seven years ago. You probably have not noticed it, but the building in which we are gathered, stands on a sandy ridge, to Dutch eyes almost a hill, overlooking what in St Willibrord's days must have been a soggy swamp. On that ridge, St Willibrord built two churches and a monastery inside a Frankish fortress, which was erected there a few years earlier to keep the Frisians in their place. Churches and monastery became the centre of St Willibrord's mission to the Frisians of the Northern Netherlands, for which purpose he had been ordained an archbishop by Pope Scrgius I in Rome on 21 November of the year 695. The fact, however, that St Willibrord's monastery was built inside a Frankish military base may already give you a hint that per- haps I am slightly exaggerating when I refer to his missionary efforts as a first form of British-Dutch cooperation. All of us here present know enough about the rough and ready methods and tactics of the conversion of Northern Europe to the Christian faith, always with the King of the Franks hovering in the background, to realise that it was probably more a matter of the British coercing the Dutch rather than cooperating with them. It is certainly true that St Willibrord quite often had to seek refuge in the abbey of Echternach, founded by him, when things got out of hand in Utrecht and the Dutch put a temporary end to cooperative efforts. -

Facts on St Willibrord Patron Saint of Luxembourg &His
FACTS ON ST WILLIBRORD PATRON SAINT OF LUXEMBOURG & HIS CARLOW CONNECTION • St. Willibrord was born near York, Northumbria, England in 658AD. • He died in 739AD aged 81 in Echternach, Luxembourg. • His Feast Day is the 7th of November. • He is the Patron Saint of Luxembourg and he is the only Saint buried in Luxembourg. • He was trained and ordained at a religious site located in the townland of Garryhundon, Co Carlow commonly referred to as Killogan, Rath Melsigi (Rathmelsh) or Clonmelsh. • During the 7th and 8th centuries this site was the most important Anglo-Saxon ecclesiastical settlement in Ireland. From 678AD to c. 720AD many Englishmen were trained for the continental mission. • In 690AD Willibrord led a successful mission from Carlow, made up of Irishmen and Englishmen to the continent. • He was consecrated as a Bishop by Pope Sergius 1 in Rome in 695AD. • He built a Cathedral in Utrecht, Holland and became the first Bishop of Utrecht. • In 698AD he established his monastery in Echternach, said to be the oldest town in Luxembourg. • As part of his abbey in Echternach he established a scriptorium where they produced many of the bibles, psalms and prayer-books that are to be found today in the great libraries of Europe. • His signature is the oldest dateable signature in the English language and is written in a book that was probably written in Co. Carlow. This book is now housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. • He is buried in the crypt Basilica of Echternach, Luxembourg which is the centre of his monastery. -

The data contained within this table was collated using the information presented in Metzler’s (1995a, 1995b) reports on the excavations conducted by Luxembourg’s National Museum of History and Art at Titelberg, and comprises details of these vessels’ forms, (recorded using the system presented within Metzler’s report as this was also utilised in the reports documenting excavations at Lamadelaine and Goeblange-Nospelt); form types, (in other words were they beakers, bowls, or platters etc.); dates of manufacture; origins, (in terms of where they were manufactured); and the number of each form present. Furthermore, these vessels are grouped within the table based on the contexts from which they were recovered (following the order in which the contexts were presented in the site report), as the site reports also contained details of Titelberg’s stratification. This table was included here to ensure that the author’s overview of the archaeology attributed to the Titelberg’s later Iron Age occupation as a whole, (see Chapter 9.1.2.2), was not burdened by raw data when its purpose was to provide a brief outline of the evidence that was to be explored later on in the chapter (Section 9.3). -

Major threats to bridges primarily consist of the aging of the structural elements, earthquake-induced shaking and standing waves generated by windstorms. The necessity of information on the state of health of structures in real-time, allowing for timely warnings in the case of damaging events, requires structural health monitoring (SHM) systems that allow the risks of these threats to be mitigated. Here we present the results of a short-duration experiment carried out with low-cost wireless instruments for monitoring the vibration characteristics and dynamic properties of a strategic civil infrastructure, the Adolphe Bridge in Luxembourg City.
