Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the BKGA 85 BKGA Religion in China prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Contemporary Major Concepts and religious minorities, their specific social problems, and their regional diversities are discussed in the cases of Abrahamitic traditions in China. The volume therefore contributes to our understanding of most recent and Minority Positions potentially violent religio-political phenomena such as, for instance, Islamist movements in the People’s Republic of China. Religion in China Religion ∙ Max DEEG is Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of Cardiff. His research interests include in particular Buddhist narratives and their roles for the construction of identity in premodern Buddhist communities. Bernhard SCHEID is a senior research fellow at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Most ethnic conflicts, together with other forms of ethnic co-existence including cooperation, contain elements of all these theoretical perspectives, which is evident in the case of Tibetan-Muslim relations presented here. -

Even though China is nowhere near the heartland of Islam, the country is not a stranger to the religion brought by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In fact, Islam had reached China as early as 7th century ce and achieved its zenith during the era of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 ce), also known as the “Golden Age of Islam” in China. Not only were Muslims during the Ming era generally accepted by majority Chinese whose affiliations were predominantly Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism, Islam was legally recognised by the imperial government. The number of Islamic institutions such as mosques and learning centres increased, and so did the number of Muslim population in the country. In administration and politics, the Muslims equally received their share while Muslim intellectuals and scholars found themselves appreciated and acknowledged by Chinese rulers for their contributions. Nevertheless, as with minorities of other countries, the Muslims in China were subject to assimilation or integration into the culture of the majority, i.e., Han Chinese. -

JISMOR 8 JISMOR 8 The Present Situation and Characteristics of Contemporary Islam in China Min Junqing Abstract Since it was introduced into China with the arrival of Muslims in the mid-seventh century, Is- lam has developed herein for over 1,300 years and has become one of the five major religions in contemporary China. During the process of the localization of Islam in China, it has divided into many Islamic schools, groups, and sects. In general, such four main groups as Qadim, Ikh- wan, Xidaotang, and Salafiyyah and such four main sects as Khufiyyah, Jahriyyah, Kadiriyah, and Kubrawiyyah have formed in the Chinese mainland; and Ishan, Sunni, and Shiite, etc., have formed in Xinjiang. Although there are some differences in Islamic culture in different areas and in different Muslim nationalities in China, the Islamic belief system has always been strict- ly continued and is still the kernel of Chinese Muslim ethnic culture. Since the 1990s, with the deepening of reform and opening up and the establishment of the commercial trade position of the southeastern coastal areas of China, within the entire country, and even within the whole of Asia, a large number of domestic and foreign Muslims have come to the southeastern coast engaging in commercial activities. Their presence influences and changes Islamic cultural ecol- ogy and social life in eastern Chinese cities. The rich concept of harmony contained in Islam is not only theoretical guidance and a code of conduct for the vast number of Muslims in China, but is also an important ideological resource for both the current Muslim areas and the rest of China toward constructing a harmonious society. -

Berlie has done research on China and Southeast Asia at the Center of Asian Studies, Hong Kong Univer sity, for more than twelve years (1991-2004). Research in Mainland China, in particular on Chinese Islam started in 1986, and includes a tieldw"ork based on four-year stay in Yunnan Province. During the period 1987-2003 research was also conducted in Beijing, Gansu, Guandong, Guangxi, Hunan, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shanghai, Sichuan, and Xinjiang. Publications include among others the following books: Macao 2000 (ed. and team leader), Oxford University Press, 1999, Sinisation (1998), Les Dai de Chine (1988), and Tepi Laut (Malaysia, 1983). The author published articles in different journals and reviews, in particular in the works of the Institute of Southeast Asia of Yunnan and the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, at Jinan University, Guangzhou. As a minority in China, Muslims have had to deal with a twofold problem: maintaining the boundary of their group and integrating into larger society. The various responses to this problem in different contexts and under different circumstances are evident in various group identity configurations. Based on Stausberg, it is proposed that the ways the identities are constructed refer to the dynamics of various types of social differentiation. The author argues that there were divergent identity configurations among Muslim elites regarding their identity sign Huihui in late imperial and post-imperial China, with the former constructed in the direction of religiosity and the latter in the direction of secularity. -
