PRESS RELEASE THE 2018 JAN MICHALSKI PRIZE Montricher, Wednesday, 21st November The 2018 Jan Michalski Prize was awarded to Olga Tokarczuk for her novel The Books of Jacob (Księgi Jakubowe, Wydawnictwo Literackie, 2014) translated from Polish by Maryla Laurent and published in French by Noir sur Blanc entitled Les livres de Jakób. The jury praised: “a work of immense erudition with a powerful epic sweep. The story of Jacob Frank, a fascinating character who actually existed, comes to life through the author’s sharp and poetic pen. He was the founder of a sect of Jewish heretics whose tribulations we follow through two hundred years of Polish history. The thematic richness is impressive. The story of the Frankists, rendered through a series of mythic narratives, is transformed into a universal epic tale of the struggle against rigid thinking, either religious or philosophical, that ostracize and enslave people. An extensive and prolific work that warns against our inability to embrace an environment complex in its diversity, fueling a fanatical sectarianism which ends in disaster. The Books of Jacob, by telling the past with a dazzling virtuosity, helps us to better understand the world in which we live.” The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 21st November at 11am at the Jan Michalski Foundation for Literature in Montricher, in Switzerland. Born in 1962 in Sulechów in Poland, Olga Tokarczuk graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in psychology and has been writing since 1997. The author of short stories, essays, articles and a rich array of novels, she has been playing an important role in Polish literature: her texts have been adapted to screen and theatre, and awarded prizes, including the most important prize in Poland, Nike, which Olga Tokarczuk won twice. -

International Fiction Book Club Olga Torkarczuk – Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead Monday 18 May 2020 The second meeting of the Litfest International Fiction Book Club was held by Zoom on Monday 18 May. We discussed Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk’s intriguing “crime” novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead, translated from the Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, published in paperback and as an eBook by Fitzcarraldo Editions. About the Book Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead is an intriguing noir novel by the Nobel Laureate and Man Booker- International Prize-winner Olga Tokarczuk. In a remote Polish village, Janina Duszejko, an eccentric and reclusive woman in her sixties, who prefers the company of animals, believes in the stars and loves the poetry of William Blake, recounts the events surrounding the disappearance of her two dogs. But when members of the local hunting club are found murdered, she becomes involved in the investigation. In 2017, eight years after the novel was first published, it was filmed by Agnieszka Holland as Spoor and caused a genuine political uproar in Tokarczuk’s native Poland. We chose this book because it is highly entertaining and unusual – an existential, environmental and political novel presented as a piece of noir fiction told in the voice of its main character. It is a fascinating and complex novel, so we were very glad that Olga Tokarczuk’s translator, Antonia Lloyd-Jones, could join us to explain some of the background, to talk about the challenges of translation and to share her detailed knowledge of the author’s work. -
The Nobel Prize in Literature 2018: Biobibliographical Notes
Biobibliographical notes Olga Tokarczuk was born 1962 in Sulechów in Poland, and today lives in Wrocław. Her parents were teachers and her father also functioned as school librarian. In the library she read pretty much everything she could get hold of and it was here that she developed her literary appetite. After studies in psychology at the University of Warsaw she made her debut as a fiction writer 1993 with Podróz ludzi Księgi (”The Journey of the Book-People”), set in 17th century France and Spain where the characters are in search of a mysterious book in the Pyrenees. The book was well received and was awarded the Polish Publisher’s Prize for the best debut 1993-94. Still, her real breakthrough came with her third novel Prawiek i inne czasy 1996 (Primeval and Other Times, 2010). This subtly built family saga in several succeeding generations is set in a mythical place with strong symbolical impact, while, at the same time, being full of realistic and vivid details. It starts in the year 1914 and deals with the Polish history of the 20th century, and Tokarczuk has claimed that the narrative was a personal attempt to come to terms with the national image of the past. The novel is an excellent example of the new Polish literature after 1989, resisting moral judgement and unwilling to represent the conscience of the nation. Instead it shows a remarkable gift of imagination with a high degree of artistic sophistication. But the device of a linear fable with an omniscient narrator, as well as the strong metaphysical undercurrent, are abandoned in the impressive Dom dzienny, dom nocny from 1998 (House of Day, House of Night, 2002). -

LAUDATIO FOR OLGA TOKARCZUK BY JACEK DEHNEL, JURY MEMBER Ladies and Gentlemen, dear Olga, The least successful eulogies are the ones where the speaker talks about himself, and not about the person who is actually receiving the award; I’m afraid we’ve all heard that sort of a eulogy at least once in our lives. But please allow me to make one small personal comment. Now that I’ve reached the end of my three-year term as a member of the jury for the Jan Michalski Prize, it is my great joy and honour to be able to share with you my admiration for the work of an author whom I regard as the greatest writer working in my native language today. Nor am I alone in my admiration. At last the whole world is starting to appreciate the greatness of Olga Tokarczuk’s writing. Just a few months ago she won the Man Booker International award for her novel Flights, and the film adaptation of another novel recently published in English translation, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for its director, Agnieszka Holland. More and more translations are appearing and are making the best-seller lists in their own countries, as well as winning prizes – in Great Britain and Sweden, and now here in Montricher. But my joy derives from something else as well: from our jury’s contribution to an important process. I think it’s worth mentioning that process while presenting an award to The Books of Jacob, whose main protagonist comes from the ill-defined, marshy frontiers of Europe, from lands that are regarded with indifference, if not superiority, like most things that are poorly known or entirely unfamiliar. -

Estate Maps of County Limerick The following started life as a simple listing of estate maps of county Limerick, but has evolved to include sale catalogues, rentals etc. We are working on including all the names of tenants, lessees etc. and hope this will make it an important resource especially for those researching their family history. There are more maps yet to be found. If anybody using this list knows of other maps then I am happy to add them, providing a proper reference is given. If there is no link the map or rental can only be viewed at the relevant institution. I intend to update this site as and when new information becomes available, so will keep a log of changes on this page. Abbreviations used in the text can be found on the last page. N.B. The Abbey Theatre invests in, nurtures and promotes Irish theatre artists.
