His research interests include translation stud- ies, Polish interwar and post-1989 literature, and gender and queer studies in Eastern Europe. He has translated many 20th century Polish writers into Italian, such as Witold Gombrowicz, Adam Zagajewski, Wiesław Myśliwski, Zuzanna Ginczanka, Andrzej Stasiuk, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki, Antoni Libera, Izabela Filipiak, Łukasz Jarosz, and Piotr Paziński. He is the author of two monographs: Il Discorso dell’Altro. La costruzione delle identità omosessuali nella narrativa polacca del Novecento (2008) and Le parole e il silenzio. La poesia di Zuzanna Ginczanka e Krystyna Krahelska (2016). Lidia Mafrica graduated in 2015 from the University of Udine, where she specialised in Polish language and literature. In her master’s dissertation, she discussed the analysis and Italian translation of Fotoplastikon by Jacek Dehnel. Currently she is a temporary research fellow at University of Genoa and edito- rial assistant for “pl.it / rassegna italiana di argomenti polacchi”. Dario Prola is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Applied Linguistics of Warsaw University. He teaches the history of Italian literature, literary translation, and specialised translation. He received a PhD in 2008 from Turin University, with a thesis on the theme of myth and representation of the city in Polish literature after 1989. His research interests include contemporary Polish literature, literary translation, and literary relationships between Italy and Poland. He is the author of numerous articles and two monographs: Mito e rappresentazione della città nella letteratura polacca (2014) and Spossato dalla bellezza: l’Italia nella scrittura di Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (2018). -

International Fiction Book Club Olga Torkarczuk – Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead Monday 18 May 2020 The second meeting of the Litfest International Fiction Book Club was held by Zoom on Monday 18 May. We discussed Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk’s intriguing “crime” novel Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead, translated from the Polish by Antonia Lloyd-Jones, published in paperback and as an eBook by Fitzcarraldo Editions. About the Book Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead is an intriguing noir novel by the Nobel Laureate and Man Booker- International Prize-winner Olga Tokarczuk. In a remote Polish village, Janina Duszejko, an eccentric and reclusive woman in her sixties, who prefers the company of animals, believes in the stars and loves the poetry of William Blake, recounts the events surrounding the disappearance of her two dogs. But when members of the local hunting club are found murdered, she becomes involved in the investigation. In 2017, eight years after the novel was first published, it was filmed by Agnieszka Holland as Spoor and caused a genuine political uproar in Tokarczuk’s native Poland. We chose this book because it is highly entertaining and unusual – an existential, environmental and political novel presented as a piece of noir fiction told in the voice of its main character. It is a fascinating and complex novel, so we were very glad that Olga Tokarczuk’s translator, Antonia Lloyd-Jones, could join us to explain some of the background, to talk about the challenges of translation and to share her detailed knowledge of the author’s work. -

A Journal of Literary Translation 24 (2010): 263–290 doi:10.4467/16891864ePC.12.014.0576 JOANNA RZEPA POLISH LITERATURE IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION 1999–2009 Abstract: In the period under consideration 265 Polish titles (poetry, drama, prose fi ction, reportage and memoirs) were published in English. Their publishers were mostly academic presses and small independent publishers, often subsidised by the EU or the Polish Book Institute. The analysis of the titles leads to several conclusions. First, the image of Polish literature construed on the basis of the available translations did not refl ect the situation on the Polish book market. The percentage of translated poetry volumes and memoirs devoted to the Holocaust and the Second World War was much higher than the percentage of such titles published in Poland. Second, the beginning of the decade concentrated on classics and memoirs, whereas towards the end of the period more and more contemporary prose titles were being published. Third, the increased interest in Polish prose among the British publishers was not refl ected among their American counterparts. The article is accompanied by a bibliography of English translations of Polish literature published in the years 1999–2009. Keywords: Polish literature in English translation, reception of Polish literature in the United Kingdom and the United States. The 1999–2009 decade can be viewed as a period when Poland drew nearer to West European countries. Among the changes brought about by Poland’s accession to the NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004 we can certainly list the growth in importance of the Polish language (Miodunka 2006). -
The Nobel Prize in Literature 2018: Biobibliographical Notes
Biobibliographical notes Olga Tokarczuk was born 1962 in Sulechów in Poland, and today lives in Wrocław. Her parents were teachers and her father also functioned as school librarian. In the library she read pretty much everything she could get hold of and it was here that she developed her literary appetite. After studies in psychology at the University of Warsaw she made her debut as a fiction writer 1993 with Podróz ludzi Księgi (”The Journey of the Book-People”), set in 17th century France and Spain where the characters are in search of a mysterious book in the Pyrenees. The book was well received and was awarded the Polish Publisher’s Prize for the best debut 1993-94. Still, her real breakthrough came with her third novel Prawiek i inne czasy 1996 (Primeval and Other Times, 2010). This subtly built family saga in several succeeding generations is set in a mythical place with strong symbolical impact, while, at the same time, being full of realistic and vivid details. It starts in the year 1914 and deals with the Polish history of the 20th century, and Tokarczuk has claimed that the narrative was a personal attempt to come to terms with the national image of the past. The novel is an excellent example of the new Polish literature after 1989, resisting moral judgement and unwilling to represent the conscience of the nation. Instead it shows a remarkable gift of imagination with a high degree of artistic sophistication. But the device of a linear fable with an omniscient narrator, as well as the strong metaphysical undercurrent, are abandoned in the impressive Dom dzienny, dom nocny from 1998 (House of Day, House of Night, 2002). -

LAUDATIO FOR OLGA TOKARCZUK BY JACEK DEHNEL, JURY MEMBER Ladies and Gentlemen, dear Olga, The least successful eulogies are the ones where the speaker talks about himself, and not about the person who is actually receiving the award; I’m afraid we’ve all heard that sort of a eulogy at least once in our lives. But please allow me to make one small personal comment. Now that I’ve reached the end of my three-year term as a member of the jury for the Jan Michalski Prize, it is my great joy and honour to be able to share with you my admiration for the work of an author whom I regard as the greatest writer working in my native language today. Nor am I alone in my admiration. At last the whole world is starting to appreciate the greatness of Olga Tokarczuk’s writing. Just a few months ago she won the Man Booker International award for her novel Flights, and the film adaptation of another novel recently published in English translation, Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for its director, Agnieszka Holland. More and more translations are appearing and are making the best-seller lists in their own countries, as well as winning prizes – in Great Britain and Sweden, and now here in Montricher. But my joy derives from something else as well: from our jury’s contribution to an important process. I think it’s worth mentioning that process while presenting an award to The Books of Jacob, whose main protagonist comes from the ill-defined, marshy frontiers of Europe, from lands that are regarded with indifference, if not superiority, like most things that are poorly known or entirely unfamiliar. -

Polish Novel in the 20Th Century
Agnieszka Izdebska Department of Theory of Literature University of Łódź Polish Novel in the 20th Century This text is not a compendium of knowledge about Polish novel in the 20th century. It is rather a kind of brief guide not only through Pol- ish novel, prose, literature but also through Polish culture of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. My intention is rather to point some phe- nomena, names, books, personalities – not to provide complete (whatever it means) history of Polish novel of that time. The stress is put on two literary periods: the Interwar Years and the contemporary literature in this text. There are few reasons of that. First of all the Interwar Years were the most fruitful ones in Polish history and there were a lot of fabulous figures and texts worth mentioning. Moreover the roots of modern Polish culture, literature and novel itself can be traced in that period. Furthermore, the years after the World War I was the time of emerging of new states in Europe and establishing a new political status quo. So for many readers Polish culture and literature of those times could be easily compared with historical situations of their countries. As far as contemporary Polish literature is concerned, I just find it the most inter- esting for young foreign readers. I also write about Polish popular novels – fantasy literature and detective stories because this kind of reader might become interested. * * * 312 Agnieszka Izdebska In the 20th century realistic novel formula as the only effective one was exhausted. Nobody believed any more that it is a transparent cognitive tool, which could give us the same knowledge about the outside world as scientific research does.
