Jan Michalski Prize 2018
PRESS RELEASE THE 2018 JAN MICHALSKI PRIZE Montricher, Wednesday, 21st November The 2018 Jan Michalski Prize was awarded to Olga Tokarczuk for her novel The Books of Jacob (Księgi Jakubowe, Wydawnictwo Literackie, 2014) translated from Polish by Maryla Laurent and published in French by Noir sur Blanc entitled Les livres de Jakób. The jury praised: “a work of immense erudition with a powerful epic sweep. The story of Jacob Frank, a fascinating character who actually existed, comes to life through the author’s sharp and poetic pen. He was the founder of a sect of Jewish heretics whose tribulations we follow through two hundred years of Polish history. The thematic richness is impressive. The story of the Frankists, rendered through a series of mythic narratives, is transformed into a universal epic tale of the struggle against rigid thinking, either religious or philosophical, that ostracize and enslave people. An extensive and prolific work that warns against our inability to embrace an environment complex in its diversity, fueling a fanatical sectarianism which ends in disaster. The Books of Jacob, by telling the past with a dazzling virtuosity, helps us to better understand the world in which we live.” The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, 21st November at 11am at the Jan Michalski Foundation for Literature in Montricher, in Switzerland. Born in 1962 in Sulechów in Poland, Olga Tokarczuk graduated from the University of Warsaw with a degree in psychology and has been writing since 1997. The author of short stories, essays, articles and a rich array of novels, she has been playing an important role in Polish literature: her texts have been adapted to screen and theatre, and awarded prizes, including the most important prize in Poland, Nike, which Olga Tokarczuk won twice. -

Our Values UNIFYING EMPOWERING FLEXIBLE PERSEVERING LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND THE DIRECTOR GENERAL Dear Friends It is with tremendous pleasure that we present our new Annual Report bringing you stories of conservation challenge and success from 2016. As well as a review of some of the year’s highlights, we pay tribute to our founder, the late Luc Hoffmann, present an overview of our 2016-2022 strategy, and introduce our work on impact and sustainability. Inside, we discover how the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF) is accessing, combining and disbursing finance from large donors in the Mediterranean and nurturing civil society groups born of the Arab Spring; applaud BirdLife’s Alcyon project for its critical mapping of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in coastal West Africa; learn about MAVA’s Ecological Infrastructure programme seeking to boost the restoration of natural habitats in canton Vaud; and recognise the vital work of the Green Economy Coalition’s Measure What Matters initiative and the need to adopt the health of people and planet as our yardstick of progress. We also profile and celebrate more conservation heroes: Maher Mahjoub, IUCN North Africa Programme Coordinator, for his ability to bring hope to remote and insecure communities and bridge worlds in the Maghreb; Jean Malack, Park Guard in the Saloum Delta National Park in Senegal, for his extraordinary navigation skills and dedication to the Alcyon project; Lukas Indermauer, leader of WWF’s Living Alpine Rhine campaign, for his commitment to taking on the grave threat of hydropower; and Oshani Perera at the International Institute for Sustainable Development for her innovative engagement with the world of development finance and foreign direct investment. -

India-Switzerland Relations
India-Switzerland Relations Political Relations India and Switzerland have had cordial and friendly relations since India’s independence. The relationship is based on shared values of democracy, multiculturalism and the rule of law. Independent India’s policy of non-alignment and Switzerland’s traditional policy of neutrality helped to develop a close understanding between the leaders of the two countries. A Treaty of Friendship between India and Switzerland was signed at New Delhi on August 14, 1948, one of the first such treaties to be signed by the independent India. The Treaty provided for the establishment of diplomatic missions between the two countries and missions were opened in Berne and Delhi soon after its conclusion. Switzerland established its Consulates General in Mumbai and Bangalore. India has a Consulate General in Geneva. During the course of 2008, India and Switzerland celebrated the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Friendship Treaty, an important milestone in the annals of Indo-Swiss bilateral relations. In recognition of the growth of multi-faceted bilateral relationship over six decades and to outline the future areas of mutual interest and cooperation, India and Switzerland have decided to elevate the bilateral relationship to a new and higher level by agreeing to establish a Privileged Partnership between them. High level visits Exchange of high level visits in the recent past has provided an impetus to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The visit of the then Swiss President, Mr. Flavio Cotti in 1998 was the first ever visit of a Swiss President to India. Later, President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr. -
The Peace Conference of Lausanne (1922-1923)
Bern 1923 - 2008 With the kind support of: Mrs Ionna Ertegiin Mrs Selma Goksel Tiirkiye I~ Bankasi Anadolu Ajans1 Thanks to: Onur Ozc;:eri (Research, text and layout) Agathon Aerni (research) Tuluy Tanc;: (editing) © Embassy of Turkey, Bern 85 years of representation of the Republic of Turkey in Switzerland (1923-2008) The Embassy of the Republic of Turkey, Bern ~u6tic offJ'urk,ey rrfie (Jlresufent It is no coincidence that the Republic of Turkey purchased its first Embassy premises abroad, in Switzerland's capital, Bern, to establish the seat of its diplomatic representation. The negotiation of a peace treaty and its successful outcome took the shape of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. The Treaty of Lausanne left an indelible mark in our memory. The aspiration of the Turkish nation to live as a free and independent people is thus anchored in Switzerland, a land that earned the reputation for fairness, equity and justice. The subsequent adoption in 1926 of a Civil Code based on the Swiss example, the Montreux Convention negotiated in 1936 in Switzerland giving full sovereignty on the Turkish Straits and other events have solidified this perception. I am therefore particularly pleased that the roots of the friendship bonds between Turkey and Switzerland and the main events associating Switzerland to Turkey have been compiled in a book. The book also illustrates the reciprocal attention and like minded approaches of both Turkey and Switzerland to further promote bilateral relations between two democracies and to facilitate the realization of aspirations of peace. I would like to express my thanks to the President of the Swiss Confederation, His Excellency Pascal Couchepin and to all who have contributed to the realization of this book. -

THE MAGAZINE FOR THE SWISS ABROAD february 2009 / NO. 1 A new role for the Swiss army Marc Forster: Switzerland’s man in Hollywood Ordering “Swiss Review” electronically EDITORIAL C O N te N T S 3 Policy on Swiss abroad needs a legal framework ithin the space of a few months, Switzerland’s councils have managed to approve a proposal to examine direct representation for Swiss people abroad W in Parliament, to drastically cut the budget for providing information to Swiss expatriates and, just days later, to establish “Swiss Review” in law. Two steps forward, one step back. Yes to the objective, but no to the cost. Inconsistency in the extreme. The reduction in the budget for “Swiss Review” on the initiative of the FDFA is pain- ful. Not just because the publisher, the Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA), is sud- denly faced with a budgetary shortfall of half a million francs, but even more so because Illustration by Hannes Binder from the new Heidi book this severe course of action raises doubts about awareness in the federal capital Berne of the role played by “Swiss Review” and about how serious people are about recognising 4 the Fifth Switzerland.
